Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 is called Override and launched on August 20, 2026 with update v42.00. Its tagline is Break the rules.

Release and timing

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, titled Override, launched on Thursday, August 20, 2026 with update v42.00. It followed Chapter 7 Season 3, titled Runners, which ended on August 19, with the Unstable live event closing out that season story on August 15. The Override battle pass was scheduled to end on November 1, 2026 Eastern Time. Override has been reported as the last full-length season of Chapter 7, with a shorter season expected to follow before Chapter 8, though Epic has not officially confirmed that.

The core idea: Overrides change the rules

The big idea of the season is that the rules of a match are no longer fixed. Override Consoles appear in every match. Whoever reaches one first can change the rules for the whole server, and their name appears around the console base. There are also rare squad Overrides that buff only the squad that grabs them, though they reveal that squad’s location on the map. This means every match can play differently depending on who finds the consoles and how they use them.

Cheat Codes, Lobby Hacks and Loot Hacks

Epic’s season messaging is Break the rules. Activate Overrides. Uncover real-world Lobby Hacks. Enter Cheat Codes across the Island. Cheat Codes are entered on the island, and Lobby Hacks are things to uncover outside the match. Loot Hacks let you spend Sprite Dust to customize what drops from Battle Royale chests, adding bonus items that are not found elsewhere. The official page calls these Loot Hacks, not Hack Chests, so use that name when you search in game.

Sprites

Sprites return with a new generation in Battle Royale. Each Sprite has an individual ability you can use during a match. Sprites you collected in Chapter 7 Season 3 carry over to the new Sprite Garden mode, where you can play with them and show them to friends. Trailer sprites included Sonic, Tails, Klombo, Jazz Jackrabbit, Bush Ranger and Killswitch.

New and changed locations

  • Green Hill Zone: inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog, with speed boosters, grind rails and jump springs that help with movement and escaping fights. It has common and Sprite chests, and many players land here.
  • Pac-Man islands: three islands shaped like Pac-Man, Blinky and Pinky. Chests are usually under trees, and there is little cover, so these are risky landings.
  • Reality’s Reign: a futuristic zone with structures inspired by PC hardware, many chests and plenty of cover. It is considered safer to land in.
  • Stone Sanctum: a stone structure resembling ancient temples, with chests and cover. Its shape-shifting walls help you lose pursuers but make chasing opponents harder.
  • Sunken Shores: carried over from Season 3 with a Tetris makeover, where Tetris blocks appear on its decrepit houses.

Other reports list Geno HQ, The Spire and a Temple among the locations. Some Chapter 7 Season 3 locations such as Sinister Strip, Calamari Canyon and Frosted Flats were removed.

New weapons and gear

  • Midas’ Masterpiece pistol: a pistol that offers one-headshot instagibs.
  • Mega Man’s Mega Buster: an arm cannon.
  • Sonic’s Power Sneakers: mobility gear used in the Green Hill Zone race.
  • Tetris Rift: a throwable item.
  • Later in the season: the Kingdom Key from Kingdom Hearts and Rebecca’s Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

The official community update notes list every new and unvaulted weapon.

Battle pass and crossovers

The Override battle pass is headlined by Sonic the Hedgehog, with Tails as his Sidekick, and reports put it at 12 skins. Buying it before August 27 at 11:59 PM ET granted the Infiltrator Grace Crowne outfit as a launch-week bonus, and gifting the pass to a friend gives both players the Peril Peak Mali outfit. Crossover items and outfits arrived throughout the season from Kingdom Hearts, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Persona 5 Royal, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, 99 Nights in the Forest, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. Most of the big crossovers land in the Item Shop, not the pass.

How to play the season well

  1. Land at Reality’s Reign or Stone Sanctum if you want loot and cover. Pick the Pac-Man islands or Green Hill Zone only if you can handle early fights.
  2. Look for an Override Console as soon as you land. Control of the rules can decide fights.
  3. Collect Sprite Dust and plan your Loot Hacks before you need them.
  4. Use the Green Hill Zone rails and springs to escape fights.
  5. Carry the Mega Buster or the Midas pistol if you find them, since both are strong.

Is Override still live?

The pass was scheduled to end on November 1, 2026. Check the in-game news for the next season or mini-season, because the core mechanics from Override may change.

Example: how an Override changes a match

Imagine you land near an Override Console. You reach it first, your name appears around its base, and you change a rule for the whole server. Everyone else in the match now plays under that rule until it changes again. At the same time, a rare squad Override might buff your squad but reveal your location on the map. The tradeoff is the heart of the season: power comes with risk. If you play in a squad, decide beforehand who will claim consoles and who will cover.

What Sprites do for you

Sprites are companions that give you abilities during a match, and a new generation arrived in Override. Sprite Dust is the currency tied to Loot Hacks, which let you shape what drops from chests. Using Sprite Dust well means choosing bonus items that fit how you play, such as healing for aggressive players or mobility for players who like to rotate. Because Sprites collected in Season 3 carry over to the Sprite Garden mode, returning players start with a head start on collection.

The gaming legends theme

The season is built around a Gaming Legends theme. Sonic the Hedgehog headlines the pass and appears with Tails, and Mega Man, Pac-Man, Tetris, Persona 5 Royal, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Kingdom Hearts all show up in gear, locations or the Item Shop. The crossovers are not only cosmetic. Sonic’s Power Sneakers power the Green Hill Zone race, Mega Man’s Mega Buster is a weapon, and Tetris blocks reshape Sunken Shores. Seeing them as mechanics, not decoration, helps you predict where the season will go.

Treat these notes as a snapshot of how the season worked, since later updates may adjust weapons and locations.
