Frequently asked questions about PlayStation Portal

How much is the PlayStation Portal?

$249.99 in the US since April 2, 2026.

What is a PlayStation Portal?

A handheld that streams PS5 games over Wi-Fi from your console or from PS Plus Premium cloud streaming.

Do you need a PS5 to use a PlayStation Portal?

For Remote Play, yes. With PS Plus Premium you can stream supported games from the cloud without a PS5.

Is the PlayStation Portal worth it?

Yes if you own a PS5 and have strong home Wi-Fi; not if you want offline portable gaming.

The PlayStation Portal is Sony’s handheld remote player. What is a PlayStation Portal? It is an 8-inch, 1080p screen with a DualSense controller split on each side. It does not run games itself: it streams them from your PS5 over Wi-Fi, and, since late 2025, from Sony’s cloud for PlayStation Plus Premium members.

Price

The Sony PlayStation Portal launched on November 15, 2023 for $199.99. Sony raised it to $249.99 on April 2, 2026. A PlayStation Portal price drop usually only shows up as a sale (for example a PlayStation Portal Black Friday deal), not a permanent cut. A PlayStation Portal 30th Anniversary edition in the grey PS1 colors was sold in 2024.

Do you need a PS5 to use a PlayStation Portal?

Mostly, yes. Remote Play from your own PS5 is still the main way to play. But PlayStation Portal updates have widened it: cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium left beta on November 5, 2025, and a 2026 PlayStation Portal update added streaming of games you own in Your Library. With Premium you can play many games without turning on a PS5 at all.

PlayStation Portal review: is it worth it?

Is the PlayStation Portal worth it? Yes if you own a PS5 and want to play in bed or while the TV is busy: the screen is sharp, the controls are full DualSense with haptics, and latency is low on good home Wi-Fi. No if you want a true portable PlayStation that plays offline. PlayStation Portal reviews consistently praise the screen and controls and criticize the Wi-Fi dependence and the lack of standard Bluetooth audio (it uses PlayStation Link instead).

  • Pros: great 8-inch screen, full DualSense features, light, cloud streaming with Premium.
  • Cons: needs strong Wi-Fi, no offline games, no standard Bluetooth headphones, no browser or apps.

Cases and accessories

A PlayStation Portal case is worth buying because the grips stick out. Sony sells an official case; hard-shell cases with a charger pocket are common. For audio, use the Pulse Elite or Pulse Explore with the PlayStation Link adapter, or a USB-C dongle. See the best headsets for PlayStation.

Portable PlayStation history

The Portal is Sony’s first portable PlayStation since the PS Vita (2011) and PSP (2004). A real portable PlayStation that runs games is rumored alongside the PlayStation 6. For setup tips see PlayStation Remote Play.

How to set up a PlayStation Portal

  1. Update your PS5 to the latest system software and enable Remote Play in Settings > System > Remote Play.
  2. In Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network, so the Portal can wake your console.
  3. Charge the Portal, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the same PSN account as your PS5.
  4. Select your PS5 to start Remote Play, or choose cloud streaming if you have PlayStation Plus Premium.

Best Wi-Fi settings for the Portal

The Portal is only as good as your network. Connect your PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable; this one change fixes most stutter. Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network for the Portal, keep it within a room or two of the router, and avoid busy hours when other people stream 4K video. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps, but 15 Mbps or more with low latency gives a sharp 1080p picture. Remote Play outside your home works, but hotel and public Wi-Fi often block it or cause lag.

What games work on the PlayStation Portal?

With Remote Play, nearly every PS5 and PS4 game installed on your console works, including disc games as long as the disc is in the PS5. A few things do not work: games that need PlayStation VR2, and media apps such as Netflix or YouTube. With cloud streaming, you can play the PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog and, since 2026, many digital games you own, without your console turned on.

Battery life and charging

Expect about 7 to 9 hours per charge, less with full brightness and strong haptics. The Portal charges over USB-C and takes about two and a half hours to fill. You can play while charging, so a long USB-C cable is a cheap upgrade for marathon sessions. Lower the screen brightness and turn down vibration and trigger effects in settings to stretch a charge.

Audio on the Portal

The Portal has a 3.5mm headphone jack and supports PlayStation Link wireless audio, used by the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds. It does not support normal Bluetooth headphones such as AirPods. A USB-C audio adapter is a workaround for some wired headsets.

PlayStation Portal vs other handhelds

DeviceRuns games itself?PriceBest for
PlayStation PortalNo, streams$249.99PS5 owners at home
Steam Deck OLEDYes$549+PC games anywhere
ROG Xbox AllyYes$599+Xbox and PC games
Nintendo Switch 2Yes$449+Nintendo games

If you want to play away from home, a device that runs games locally is better. If your PS5 is busy because someone else is using the TV, the Portal is the most comfortable way to keep playing your PlayStation library.

Common PlayStation Portal problems and fixes

  • Cannot connect to PS5: check that Remote Play is enabled, both devices use the same PSN account, and rest-mode network features are on. Restart the router if the PS5 does not wake.
  • Blurry picture or stutter: wire the PS5 to the router, move closer to the access point, and switch the Portal to a 5 GHz network.
  • Audio out of sync: restart the stream; if it continues, turn off 3D Audio on the PS5 while using the Portal.
  • Portal will not charge: try another USB-C cable and a 15W or stronger charger, then hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a restart.
  • Cloud games missing: cloud streaming needs an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and is only available in supported countries.

Should you buy a Portal or save for a PS6 handheld?

Reports say Sony is working on a handheld that runs PlayStation games natively, but it has not been announced and is unlikely before 2027. If you want to play your PS5 library around the house today, the Portal is the only official option. If you mainly want to play outside the house, wait or consider a PC handheld. Follow the latest on the PlayStation 6 page.

PlayStation Portal tips

  • Pin your most played games to the Portal’s quick menu so you jump in faster.
  • Turn on the Portal’s “Remote Play from outside your home” only if your upload speed at home is at least 15 Mbps.
  • Use the touch screen as the DualSense touchpad: the two corners of the screen act as the left and right touchpad areas.
  • Keep a Portal case with a strap if you carry it between rooms; the screen is not Gorilla Glass and scratches easily.

Our verdict

The PlayStation Portal does one job very well: it puts your PS5 on a sharp 8-inch screen with a full DualSense around it, anywhere in your home. With PlayStation Plus Premium it now also plays many games straight from the cloud. Buy it if your home Wi-Fi is strong and you want to keep playing when the TV is taken; skip it if you need a handheld for trains, planes or places with weak internet.

Accessories we recommend with it: a hard case with a strap, a 2-meter USB-C cable for charging while you play, and a screen protector. Add the Pulse Explore earbuds if you want wireless audio, because ordinary Bluetooth earbuds will not connect.
