Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world action game from Rockstar North, published by Rockstar Games. You play three protagonists in and around Los Santos, San Andreas. It first released on 17 September 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, came to PS4 and Xbox One on 18 November 2014, to PC on 14 April 2015, and to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 15 March 2022.

More than a decade after launch, GTA V is still one of the best-selling games every year, with more than 220 million copies sold, and GTA Online keeps receiving updates. Story and characters

GTA V follows three criminals whose lives collide in Los Santos. Michael De Santa is a retired bank robber in witness protection, bored and unhappy with his family. Franklin Clinton is a young repo man from South Los Santos looking for a bigger score. Trevor Philips is Michael’s unstable former partner, running a meth business in Blaine County. GTA 5 on Xbox Series X|S and PS5

The Expanded and Enhanced edition of GTA 5 for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 launched on March 15, 2022. On Xbox Series X it offers a 4K Fidelity mode with ray-traced shadows, a Performance mode at 60fps, and a Performance RT mode that combines 60fps with some ray tracing. It also adds faster loading, improved textures, better traffic density and the Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades in GTA Online. Saves and GTA Online characters can be transferred from Xbox One with a one-time migration. Since 2025, PC players have the matching GTA V Enhanced edition. The Xbox One and PS4 versions of GTA Online stopped being supported in December 2024, so current-gen is required to play online on console.

Cheat codes on every platform

GTA V cheats work in story mode only, not GTA Online. On PC, open the console with the tilde key and type the cheat word. On PlayStation and Xbox, enter button sequences quickly during gameplay, or dial them as phone numbers on the in-game phone on every platform. GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition cheats on Xbox One

GTA San Andreas: The Definitive Edition, part of the Trilogy remaster, also supports button cheats on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Enter them during gameplay with the controller, just like the original. Popular examples include health, armor and money (RB, RT, LB, A, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up), and lowering your wanted level (RB, RB, B, RT, Up, Down, Up, Down, Up, Down). Cheats in the Definitive Edition also disable achievements for that session.

GTA Online

GTA Online is included with GTA V and lets up to 30 players share Los Santos. You can run businesses such as nightclubs, bunkers, the Acid Lab and the Agency, complete heists like the Cayo Perico Heist, race, and play countless community jobs. GTA 6

The map: Los Santos and Blaine County

GTA V’s map is Rockstar’s version of Southern California. Los Santos mirrors Los Angeles, from the beaches of Vespucci and Del Perro to the hills of Vinewood, the downtown skyscrapers and the docks of Elysian Island. North of the city, Blaine County covers deserts, farmland, the Alamo Sea, the small towns of Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay, and Mount Chiliad, home of the game’s most famous mysteries. Fort Zancudo, the military base, is where many players find their first jet. The map is still large and detailed by modern standards, and GTA Online has added interiors, islands such as Cayo Perico, and new districts over the years.

Which edition should you buy?

On Xbox Series X|S and PS5, buy the current-generation version of GTA V, which includes GTA Online. GTA Online can also be bought separately as a standalone purchase on current-gen consoles, which is cheaper if you have no interest in story mode. On PC, GTA V Enhanced is the version to play, and owners of the older PC version received it free. GTA V is frequently discounted and has appeared on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus several times, so check the subscriptions before you pay full price.

Tips for new players

In story mode, complete the Lester assassination missions before investing in the stock market, because those missions move share prices and can make your characters rich. Spend money on safehouses, garages and the businesses each character can buy, and use Franklin’s special ability to slow time while driving. In GTA Online, start with contact missions and races to learn the map, invest early in a cheap money-making business, play with friends or a crew rather than in public lobbies full of griefers, and save up for an armored vehicle before taking on dangerous work. A headset helps, and passive mode is useful when you just want to explore.

GTA V performance on PC

GTA V Enhanced on PC adds ray tracing, DLSS and FSR support, faster loading on SSDs, and the visual upgrades of the console versions. It runs well on modest hardware, so most gaming PCs from the last few years can play at high settings. Mods remain popular in story mode, but using mods in GTA Online can get you banned.
