All toolsFrequently asked questions about PlayStation 5
Where is the best place to buy a PlayStation 5?
PlayStation Direct sells every model at the official price. Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, Target and Amazon also stock the PS5 and often add bundles or gift cards during sales.
Is it safe to buy a used PlayStation 5?
Yes, if you test the console before paying, check the disc drive, ports and controller, and make sure the seller has removed their account. Use a marketplace with buyer protection.
What is a refurbished PlayStation 5?
A console that has been inspected, repaired if needed and reset. Sony-certified refurbished units include a warranty and are the safest second-hand option.
Are PlayStation 5 bundles worth it?
They are worth it when the included game is one you want or when the bundle costs the same as the console alone.
Does GameStop take trade-ins for a PS5?
Yes. GameStop accepts consoles and games as trade-in credit toward a new or pre-owned PS5.
When did the PS5 come out?
The PlayStation 5 launched on November 12, 2020 in North America, Japan and Australia, and on November 19, 2020 in most other regions.
How much storage does the PS5 have?
The original PS5 has an 825 GB SSD, with about 667 GB usable. The slimmer model from late 2023 has 1 TB. You can add an M.2 NVMe SSD inside or use a USB drive for PS4 games.
What is the difference between the PS5 disc and digital editions?
The digital edition has no disc drive and so can only play downloaded games. The processor and graphics are the same on both.
Does the PS5 play PS4 games?
Yes, the PS5 is backward compatible with the large majority of PS4 games.
Has the PS5 price changed in 2026?
Several 2026 buying guides report price increases across consoles. Prices vary by region and retailer, so check the current price at the store.
The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s current home console and the best-selling console of this generation, with about 95 million units sold by mid-2026. It uses a custom AMD processor with about 10.28 teraflops of graphics power, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and an ultra-fast SSD, and it plays almost every PS4 game too. This hub covers the Sony PlayStation 5 console family, current prices, where to buy a PlayStation 5 new, used or refurbished, bundles, the latest PlayStation 5 news, and links to every PS5 guide on the site.
PlayStation 5 models in 2026
- PS5 with disc drive: plays discs and digital games, 1TB storage.
- PS5 Digital Edition: no disc drive, digital games only.
- PS5 Pro: stronger GPU, PSSR upscaling, 2TB storage, no disc drive. See the PS5 Pro hub.
Every new console uses the slim design from late 2023. For a detailed comparison of the models, read the PS5 buying guide.
PlayStation 5 price
Sony’s official US prices since April 2, 2026 are $649.99 for the disc PS5, $599.99 for the Digital Edition and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro. Since late August many US retailers have sold them at $549.99, $499.99 and $749.99, and reports disagree on whether Sony formally reversed the increase. Always compare at least two stores on the day you buy. The PS5 launched in November 2020 at $499.99 and $399.99, so this is the first console generation to get more expensive as it ages.
Where to buy a PlayStation 5
PlayStation Direct
Sony’s own store sells every model at the official price, plus bundles and accessories. It is the most reliable place for stock during busy periods.
Best Buy PlayStation 5
Best Buy stocks every PS5 model and often runs bundle deals. Its open-box section can save money on returned consoles that have been checked, and it offers paid protection plans. Searches for PlayStation 5 Best Buy deals peak around Black Friday.
GameStop PlayStation 5
GameStop sells new and pre-owned PS5 consoles and accepts trade-ins, which can cut the price if you have an old console or games to sell. Pre-owned PS5 Pro units at GameStop have been listed at well over the new price at times when stock was short, so compare before you buy.
Walmart and Target PlayStation 5
Walmart PlayStation 5 bundles often include a game, and Walmart+ members sometimes get early access to big sales. Target PlayStation 5 deals tend to appear during Target Circle Week and on Black Friday, often as gift cards with purchase rather than direct discounts. Both are good for pickup the same day.
Amazon and other stores
Amazon sells the PS5 directly, but check the seller name: third-party sellers sometimes charge far above the official price when stock is low.
PlayStation 5 bundles
A PlayStation 5 bundle usually pairs the console with a game such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Astro Bot or a sports title. Bundles are good value when the included game is one you want or when the bundle costs the same as the console alone. The PlayStation 5 Fortnite bundle is one of the most common. For seasonal deals see PlayStation deals.
Used PlayStation 5: what to know
A used PlayStation 5 can save $100 to $200, especially the original 2020 models. Typical prices in late 2026 are about $300 to $400 for a used disc console and less for the Digital Edition. When buying a PlayStation 5 used:
- Meet in a public place or use a marketplace with buyer protection.
- Ask to see the console power on and reach the home screen.
- Test the disc drive with a game, and check both USB ports and the HDMI port.
- Check the controller for stick drift.
- Make sure the seller has signed out and deactivated the console as their primary PS5.
Searching “PlayStation 5 for sale” brings up many marketplace listings. Avoid sellers who ask for payment through gift cards or wire transfers, which are common scams.
Refurbished PlayStation 5
A refurbished PlayStation 5 has been inspected, repaired if needed and reset. Sony sells certified refurbished consoles through PlayStation Direct in some regions, and major retailers sell their own refurbished units. A PlayStation 5 refurbished by Sony comes with a warranty and the full accessory set, which makes it the safest way to save money. Third-party refurbishers vary in quality, so check the warranty length and return policy before you buy.
PlayStation anniversary editions
For the PlayStation 30th anniversary in late 2024, Sony released a limited set of consoles and accessories in the grey colors of the original PS1, including a PS5, PS5 Pro, DualSense and PlayStation Portal. They sold out quickly and now trade at a premium. Reebok also released PlayStation anniversary sneakers in 2025; see PlayStation merch collaborations.

Is the PlayStation 5 still worth buying?
Yes. The PS5 has the strongest lineup of exclusive games this generation, years of support ahead, and a huge library that includes almost every PS4 game. Prices are higher than at launch, but the PS6 is not announced, and new PS5 games will keep coming for years. If price is the main concern, a refurbished or used PS5 is a sensible way in.
Trading in for a PlayStation 5
If you own a PS4, an Xbox or a stack of games, trading them in can lower the cost of a new PS5. GameStop, Best Buy in some regions, and Amazon’s trade-in program all accept consoles, while selling privately usually gets you more money but takes more effort. Before trading in, back up your saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive, sign out of your account, and restore the console to factory settings. Remember that PS4 games and saves carry over to PS5, so your library keeps its value on the new console.
Setting up a new PlayStation 5
- Connect the HDMI cable to an HDMI 2.1 port on your TV if it has one, for 4K at 120Hz.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible for faster downloads and steadier online play.
- Sign in with your PlayStation Network account, or create one. Turn on two-step verification right away.
- Use the data transfer option to copy games and saves from a PS4 or an older PS5.
- Install system updates before your first game, then set your preferred performance or resolution mode under Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Set up Family Management if children will use the console.
These steps take about 30 minutes and avoid most of the problems new owners run into.
