Yes. Call of Duty: Warzone is free-to-play on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
Call of Duty is Activision’s first-person shooter series, running since 2003 and one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. A new premium game arrives most years, alternating between studios: Infinity Ward (Modern Warfare), Treyarch (Black Ops) and Sledgehammer Games. Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale, sits alongside the yearly releases.
The newest entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launched on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the first Call of Duty not released on PS4 and Xbox One, and the first on a Nintendo console since 2013. The campaign follows Private Park, a South Korean soldier, during a war on the Korean Peninsula, alongside Captain Price. Multiplayer launched with 12 core maps plus Kill Block, a map that reconfigures between rounds, and the DMZ extraction mode returned.

Call of Duty on Xbox
Since Microsoft completed its purchase of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, Call of Duty has been an Xbox-owned series, although it still launches on PlayStation and PC as well. The biggest change for Xbox players is Game Pass: every new premium Call of Duty now launches on day one in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, starting with Black Ops 6 in 2024. Black Ops 7 joined Game Pass on its launch day, November 14, 2025, and Modern Warfare 4 followed the same pattern on October 23, 2026. If you play Call of Duty on Xbox every year, Ultimate is usually cheaper than buying each game at full price. Lower tiers such as Game Pass Premium receive Xbox-published games later, typically within a year. See the Xbox Game Pass hub for the tiers.
Black Ops 7 on Xbox
Black Ops 7 released on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on November 14, 2025, alongside PS5, PS4 and PC. It was the last Call of Duty to support the previous generation. On Xbox Series X it runs at up to 120fps in multiplayer with a 120Hz display, and Xbox Series S targets 60fps at lower resolution with 120fps options in some modes. Progression, the battle pass and your Call of Duty account are shared across platforms and with Warzone.
Xbox Call of Duty: Xbox One vs Series X|S
Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty that is not on Xbox One or PS4, so if you are still on an Xbox One you can play Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Warzone, but not the newest game. Upgrading to a Series S is the cheapest way to keep up with new releases.
Best Warzone settings on Xbox
These settings are a strong starting point for Warzone on Xbox Series X and Series S:
- Field of view: 100 to 110 on Series X for better awareness; around 100 on Series S to keep frame rates stable.
- 120Hz refresh rate: on, if your TV or monitor supports it.
- Motion blur: off for both world and weapon motion blur.
- Aim assist: Default or Precision, with a response curve of Dynamic.
- Deadzone: as low as your controller allows without drift, usually 3 to 6.
- Audio mix: Headphones Bass Boost or Home Theater with a good headset, to hear footsteps.
- Controller vibration: off, to keep aim steadier.
Crossplay and cross-progression
Call of Duty supports crossplay between Xbox, PlayStation and PC, and progression is linked through your Activision account, so your rank, unlocks and battle pass follow you between platforms. Console players can turn off crossplay in some modes, but matchmaking is usually faster with it on. Input-based matchmaking settings let you prefer opponents using controllers.
Warzone explained
Warzone is Call of Duty’s free-to-play battle royale, available on Xbox, PlayStation and PC without buying a premium game. Up to 150 players drop onto a large map, loot weapons and cash, and fight as the circle closes. If you die early, you fight another player in the Gulag for a chance to redeploy. Resurgence modes on smaller maps let you respawn while your squad is alive, which makes them better for beginners. Warzone shares its weapons, operators and battle pass with the newest premium game, so progress in one carries over to the other. You do not need Game Pass Essential or PlayStation Plus to play Warzone online, because it is free-to-play.
Modern Warfare 4 at a glance
Modern Warfare 4 continues Infinity Ward’s rebooted Modern Warfare story with Captain Price, now set during a war on the Korean Peninsula. The campaign follows a new lead character, Private Park, and mixes large set pieces with quieter stealth missions. Multiplayer launched with 12 core maps plus the shape-shifting Kill Block, and the DMZ extraction mode returned for players who enjoy slower, objective-driven raids, similar in spirit to ARC Raiders. Because it is current-gen only, it is the best-looking Call of Duty yet on Xbox Series X and PS5.
Beginner tips for Call of Duty multiplayer
Start in casual playlists such as Team Deathmatch and Domination while you learn the maps. Use one weapon until you unlock its attachments, rather than switching constantly. Learn the common lanes on each map and avoid running through the middle of open areas. Turn on the radar and minimap features that show enemy fire, and pay attention to sound: a good headset is one of the most valuable upgrades in Call of Duty. Finally, use the firing range to tune your sensitivity before jumping into ranked play.
Redeem codes and bonuses
Call of Duty regularly offers redeemable codes for weapon blueprints, operator skins and double XP tokens, often through partners such as energy drinks or snack brands. Redeem them on the official Call of Duty website after linking your Xbox, PlayStation or Battle.net account. See how to redeem Call of Duty codes and check the codes tab on this hub for current offers.
