PlayStation VR2

PlayStation VR2 is Sony’s virtual reality headset for PS5. It has OLED screens, eye tracking, headset rumble and Sense controllers with adaptive triggers. It costs $399.99 after Sony cut the price from the $549.99 launch price.

PlayStation VR bundle options

A PlayStation VR bundle usually pairs the headset with a game such as Horizon Call of the Mountain or Gran Turismo 7. Bundles appear mostly during sales; the headset alone is the standard model.

PlayStation VR2 PC adapter

The PlayStation VR2 PC adapter ($59.99, released August 7, 2024) lets you use PS VR2 with SteamVR. You need a PC with DisplayPort 1.4 and Bluetooth. On PC you lose eye tracking, HDR and headset rumble in most games.

PlayStation Move and the original PS VR

PlayStation Move was the glowing motion wand from 2010, used with PS3 and later the original PS VR (2016). PS VR2 does not use Move controllers or the PlayStation Camera; it has inside-out tracking and its own Sense controllers. Old PS VR games do not run on PS VR2.

What you need to play PS VR2

You need a PS5 or PS5 Pro, the PS VR2 headset (which comes with two Sense controllers), and a clear play area of at least 2 by 2 meters for room-scale games, or a seat for seated games. PS VR2 connects with one USB-C cable to the front port of the PS5, which carries video, audio and power. There are no external cameras or base stations: four cameras on the headset track your head and the controllers.

Best PS VR2 games

• Gran Turismo 7: the full game is playable in VR and is the best showcase for the headset.
• Horizon Call of the Mountain: Sony’s climbing and bow adventure set in the Horizon world.
• Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 VR modes: two of the best horror experiences in VR.
• Beat Saber: the rhythm game that sells VR to everyone.
• Synapse: a shooter that uses eye tracking to aim telekinesis.
• No Man’s Sky: the whole universe in VR.
• Phasmophobia: the ghost-hunting co-op game supports PS VR2 with crossplay.

Is PS VR2 worth it in 2026?

At $399.99 it is much easier to recommend than at launch. The screens are still among the best in console VR, eye tracking and foveated rendering keep games sharp, and Gran Turismo 7 alone justifies it for racing fans. The weak points are the smaller game library compared with standalone headsets such as the Meta Quest 3, the cable, and Sony’s slower release schedule for new VR games. If you want VR mainly for PC games, a Quest 3 with a PC link is more flexible; if you own a PS5 and love racing or horror, PS VR2 is the better experience.

PS VR2 vs Meta Quest 3 and Xbox options

The Quest 3 is wireless and standalone, works with PC VR, and even has an Xbox-branded edition (the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition), but its LCD screens lack the deep blacks of PS VR2’s OLED. Setting up PS VR2 on PC

1. Buy the $59.99 PlayStation VR2 PC adapter and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable if your GPU only has mini DisplayPort.
2. Install the PlayStation VR2 App and SteamVR from Steam.
3. Pair the Sense controllers over Bluetooth through the app.
4. Run the setup to map your play area, then launch SteamVR games.

Expect no eye tracking, no HDR and no headset rumble in most PC games, but the image quality is still excellent for sim racing and flight sims.

PS VR2 comfort and health tips

• Adjust the fit first: use the dial on the back and the scope adjustment button to slide the visor closer, and set the lens distance in the setup screen so text is sharp.
• Start seated: if you are new to VR, begin with seated or stationary games and short sessions of 15-20 minutes to avoid motion sickness.
• Use comfort settings: most PS VR2 games offer snap turning and vignettes, which reduce nausea.
• Keep the lenses clean: use a dry microfiber cloth only, and never leave the headset in direct sunlight, because lenses can focus sunlight and burn the screens.
• Glasses: most glasses fit inside the visor; prescription lens inserts are sold by third parties.
• Age: Sony says PS VR2 is for ages 12 and up.

PS VR2 history and sales

Sony announced PS VR2 in January 2022 and launched it on February 22, 2023 at $549.99. Sales were slower than Sony hoped, so the company paused production in 2024, released the PC adapter in August 2024 to open up Steam’s library, and cut the headset to $399.99 in 2025. Sony’s own VR game output slowed after Horizon Call of the Mountain, so most new PS VR2 games now come from independent studios and PC ports.

Troubleshooting PS VR2

• Tracking lost message: improve room lighting, avoid direct sunlight and mirrors, and clean the four tracking cameras on the headset.
• Blurry image: redo the lens adjustment and move the headset slightly up or down on your face; the sweet spot is small.
• Controllers not pairing: charge them, then connect each with the USB-C cable to the PS5 once.
• Headset not detected: use the front USB-C port of the PS5, and make sure the console software is up to date.

PlayStation VR (2016) vs PS VR2

The original PlayStation VR used a separate processor box, the PlayStation Camera and the PlayStation Move wands or a DualShock 4. It had lower resolution LCD-like OLED panels at 960 x 1080 per eye. PS VR2 replaced all of that with one cable and built-in tracking, but it is not backward compatible with original PS VR games, so your old PS VR library does not carry over unless a developer released a PS VR2 version. The original PlayStation Move controllers and PlayStation Camera remain useful only on PS4 and with original PS VR games running on PS5 via an adapter.

Should you buy PS VR2 or wait?

Sony has not announced a PS VR3, and reports about the PlayStation 6 do not mention a new headset, so PS VR2 is likely to stay Sony’s only VR device for several years. If the games you want already support it, there is no reason to wait for a newer model. Check the PlayStation Store’s PS VR2 section for current titles and look for bundles during Black Friday and Days of Play, when Sony often adds a free game or lowers the price further.
