Frequently asked questions about Xbox Controller

What is the Xbox controller warranty?

Standard controllers have a 90-day Microsoft warranty in the US; Elite controllers and some regions get longer coverage.

Is there an Xbox Elite Series 3?

Not officially. A Series 3 leaked in May 2026, but Microsoft has not announced it.

Does an Xbox One controller work on Xbox Series X?

Yes. All Xbox One controllers work on Xbox Series X|S.

How long does an Xbox controller battery last?

About 30-40 hours on two AA batteries and roughly 20-30 hours on the official rechargeable pack.

What is an Xbox controller with paddles?

A pad with back buttons, such as the Xbox Elite Series 2 or a SCUF controller, so you can jump or reload without taking your thumb off the stick.

The Xbox controller is one of the most copied gamepads ever, and it works on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, phones and tablets. This hub covers every current Xbox controller, the older ones, third-party options and the accessories that go with them.

Current Xbox controllers

Controller Price (US) Best for
Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X|S) from $64.99 Most players; works on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and phones
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 about $169.99-$179.99 Paddles, adjustable tension, competitive play
Xbox Elite Series 2 Core about $139.99 Elite controller without the extra parts
Xbox Adaptive Controller $99.99 Players with limited mobility
Xbox Design Lab from $79.99 Custom colors and engraving

The Xbox Series X controller (officially the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller) is the same pad sold with the Series X and Series S. It added a Share button, a hybrid D-pad and USB-C. It is fully backward compatible, so the Xbox controller for Series X works as an Xbox One controller too.

Xbox One controllers

The original Xbox One controller (2013) used a micro-USB port and no Bluetooth. The Xbox One S controller (2016) added Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headset jack, which is why it works with PCs and phones. Both work on Xbox Series X|S. An Xbox One wireless controller (or wireless Xbox One controller, as many search it) can also be used as a wired Xbox One controller with a micro-USB cable. People still search “Xbox 1 controller” for these.

Wired Xbox controllers

A wired Xbox controller has no batteries and no pairing, which suits PC and competitive play. Options for an Xbox wired controller include the PowerA and Turtle Beach licensed pads and the GameSir G7 SE wired Xbox controller, which has Hall effect sticks that resist drift. The GameSir G7 Pro is a wireless Xbox-licensed option with Hall effect sticks and back buttons; a GameSir controller for Xbox is one of the best-value upgrades. An Xbox One wired controller from PowerA also works on Series X|S.

Hall effect and controllers with paddles

A Hall effect Xbox controller uses magnets instead of worn contacts in the sticks, so it should not develop stick drift. GameSir and some Turtle Beach and PowerA models use them. If you want an Xbox controller with paddles, choose the Elite Series 2, a SCUF controller for Xbox (the SCUF Instinct Pro is the main SCUF Xbox controller), or GameSir’s Pro models. Read more on the Xbox Elite controller page.

Colors and special editions

Microsoft sells many colors: a pink Xbox controller, a purple Xbox controller, red and blue Xbox controllers, white, plus limited editions such as the Deadpool Xbox controller and the X25 Special Edition controller that launched on October 20, 2026. Xbox Design Lab lets you pick colors for every part, add metallic finishes and engrave text. The tiny “Xbox nano controller” is a mini replica sold as a collectible and keychain, not a full gamepad.

Xbox controller buttons and layout

The Xbox controller layout: two analog sticks (left one higher, offset layout), a D-pad, the A (green), B (red), X (blue) and Y (yellow) face buttons, LB and RB bumpers, LT and RT triggers, View (two squares), Menu (three lines), Share, and the Xbox button that turns the controller on. If you are making an Xbox controller drawing or a mod, the offset stick layout is the key detail.

Batteries and charging

Xbox wireless controllers take two AA batteries. Xbox rechargeable batteries are the cheapest upgrade: the official Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable kit, or a third-party Xbox battery pack. An Xbox controller charger dock charges two pads at once. An Xbox controller battery lasts about 30-40 hours on AAs; an Xbox controller battery pack or Xbox rechargeable battery lasts about 20-30 hours per charge.

Where to buy and warranty

You can buy Xbox controllers from the Microsoft Store, Target, Walmart and Best Buy; searching “Xbox controller near me” usually shows a Target Xbox controller in stock first. Official controllers come with a 90-day Microsoft Xbox controller warranty in the US (longer in some regions and on Elite models). If yours stops working, see how to fix an Xbox controller that won’t connect or drifts and how to connect an Xbox controller to PC, phone or Xbox.

Original Xbox controller

The original Xbox controller from 2001 was the huge “Duke”; Microsoft replaced it with the smaller Controller S in 2002. Hyperkin sells a modern USB remake of the Duke for Xbox Series X|S and PC. See the original Xbox hub.

Which Xbox controller should you buy?

If you want… Buy Why
One good all-round pad Xbox Wireless Controller Comfortable, works everywhere, cheap to replace
Paddles and pro features Elite Series 2 or Series 2 Core Four paddles, tension and trigger locks
No stick drift for years A Hall effect pad (GameSir G7 Pro, G7 SE wired) Magnetic sticks do not wear the same way
Lowest latency on PC Any wired Xbox controller No pairing, no batteries, stable input
Accessibility Xbox Adaptive Controller Works with switches and custom inputs

How long do Xbox controllers last?

A standard Xbox Wireless Controller usually lasts two to four years of regular use. The parts that fail first are the thumbsticks (drift), the bumpers and the rubber on the grips. Drift happens because the potentiometers inside the sticks wear down; Hall effect sticks avoid that. If your controller starts drifting, try recalibrating, cleaning around the stick with isopropyl alcohol, or adjusting dead zones in game settings before you replace it. Our stick drift and connection fixes walk through every step.

Xbox controller compatibility

  • Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: every Xbox One and Series controller works on both consoles.
  • Windows PC: plug in with USB-C or micro-USB, pair over Bluetooth, or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter for up to eight controllers.
  • iPhone, iPad and Android: Bluetooth models (Xbox One S and newer) work with cloud gaming and most controller-supported games.
  • Xbox 360: Xbox One and Series controllers do not work on an Xbox 360, and Xbox 360 controllers do not work on newer consoles.
  • PlayStation and Switch: not natively; you need a third-party adapter.

For step-by-step pairing, read how to connect an Xbox controller.

Keep your controller updated

Controller firmware updates fix connection drops and add features such as Bluetooth support for older models. On console, open Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, choose the controller and select the three dots to check for updates. On PC, install the free Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store and connect the controller with a USB cable.

Xbox controller history

Microsoft has refined the same basic layout for more than twenty years. The 2001 Duke was oversized, so the Controller S became the standard in 2002. The Xbox 360 controller (2005) went wireless and added the Guide button, and it became the default PC gamepad for a decade. The Xbox One controller (2013) brought impulse triggers with their own rumble motors, and the 2016 revision added Bluetooth. The 2020 Xbox Wireless Controller kept that shape but added the Share button, a hybrid D-pad, textured grips and USB-C. Because the layout has stayed so consistent, most PC games show Xbox button prompts by default.

Cleaning and care

Wipe the shell with a soft cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, never spray liquid directly on the controller, and use a dry toothbrush around the sticks and buttons. Remove AA batteries if you store a controller for months, because leaking batteries can damage the contacts. Keep spare rechargeable packs topped up, and avoid leaving the controller in a hot car, which can warp the shell and damage the battery.
