If GPU prices look high this year, they are. Here is why, and what you can do.

What MSRP means

MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price set at launch. Retailers and card makers can charge more, especially for premium models.

Why prices are higher

Demand from gamers and AI work, plus higher memory costs, have kept prices well above MSRP. Tom’s Hardware found the RTX 5090 selling for a median of about $4,299 against its $1,999 MSRP, and the RX 9070 XT for about $759 against $599.

How to avoid overpaying

  • Compare the price against the MSRP and against cards one tier up or down.
  • Look at base models, which are closer to MSRP than premium overclocked versions.
  • Consider AMD, where the gap to MSRP has generally been smaller.
  • Use price alerts and be patient.
