The military base in GTA 5 is Fort Zancudo, a large, heavily guarded US Army base in the west of Blaine County. It is famous for its fighter jets, tanks and the instant wanted level you get when you break in. This guide shows exactly where Fort Zancudo is, how to get in, what you can steal in story mode and GTA Online, and how to escape.
Where is the military base in GTA 5?
Fort Zancudo is on the west side of the map in northern San Andreas, between the Great Ocean Highway on the coast and the Zancudo River and Lago Zancudo to the east. If you drive north out of Los Santos along the coastal Great Ocean Highway, you pass the base’s long runways on your right shortly after the Zancudo Bridge. On the pause map it is the large fenced area with runways and hangars west of Mount Josiah. Nearby landmarks include the Lago Zancudo swamps and the town of Chumash to the south.
What happens when you enter Fort Zancudo?
Climbing the fence or flying into the restricted airspace immediately gives you a four-star wanted level in story mode (and a high wanted level in GTA Online). Soldiers, military vehicles and police respond, and a tank or jets may join if you stay too long.
How to get into Fort Zancudo
- Through the fence: drive or climb over the fence near the runway on the west side, then sprint to a hangar.
- By air: fly in low with a helicopter, but expect rockets.
- Through the main gate: on the east side along Route 68, heavily guarded.
- Story mission: in the mission “The Merryweather Heist” variant and Trevor’s “Minor Turbulence”… several missions take you near or into the base legitimately.
Fort Zancudo layout
Fort Zancudo sits in the north-west of Blaine County, beside the Zancudo River and Lago Zancudo, between Route 68 to the south and the Great Ocean Highway to the west. It is a large, fenced compound with a long runway, control tower, hangars, barracks and guard posts, and it is patrolled by soldiers with tanks and armed vehicles. The main gates are on the east side near Route 68 and on the north-west side. Military jets, helicopters and the Rhino tank spawn inside the base, which is why so many players try to break in.
What you can steal at Fort Zancudo
- P-996 Lazer: the fighter jet that spawns on the runway or in the hangars. In story mode it is the most famous prize.
- Buzzard attack helicopter: a nimble chopper armed with missiles and guns.
- Titan: a large cargo plane, useful for flying across the map.
- Rhino tank: slow but almost unstoppable on the ground.
Expect a four-star wanted level as soon as you are spotted inside. Taking off quickly is the safest way out, because soldiers and anti-aircraft fire focus on vehicles that linger on the runway.
Story mode tips for breaking in
- Arrive by air from the ocean side and parachute onto the runway, or drive fast through a gate while the guards are distracted.
- Head straight for a jet or helicopter rather than fighting the soldiers.
- Take off immediately and fly low and fast to the coast, then away from the base until the wanted level drops.
- Use Trevor if you can: his rage ability helps you survive the initial gunfire.
- Save before trying, so you can reload if it goes wrong.
Cheats can make it easier: invincibility and lower wanted level codes work in story mode, but they disable achievements and trophies until you reload. See GTA cheats for Xbox and the PlayStation and PC versions on the codes tab.
Fort Zancudo in GTA Online
In GTA Online, Fort Zancudo is still restricted, but players can buy hangars there through the Smuggler’s Run update. Owning a Fort Zancudo hangar gives you legal access to the base and lets you store aircraft right next to the runway, which makes it one of the most convenient hangar locations. Entering without a hangar still triggers a wanted level. The base also appears in several heists and missions, including setups for the Doomsday Heist, so you will visit it often as you progress.
Story missions at Fort Zancudo
The base plays a role in Trevor’s storyline. Without spoiling details, Trevor gets the chance to steal military equipment from the base as part of a mission, which is one of the most memorable moments in the game. Once you have completed that part of the story, you know the layout and can return freely to steal aircraft whenever you want, wanted level permitting.
Other military locations
Fort Zancudo is the only full military base on the map, but there are related locations. The Merryweather docks at Elysian Island hold military vehicles linked to the private security company. The Humane Labs research facility in the north-east has heavy security and appears in a major heist. The Grapeseed area hides military-themed missions in GTA Online’s later updates. Flying the Lazer: quick tips
Once you have a jet, the next challenge is flying it. Pull back gently on take-off rather than all the way, or you will stall. Retract the landing gear right after take-off to gain speed. Use the rudder to make small corrections and roll the jet to turn sharply. The Lazer’s cannon is powerful against ground targets, while its homing missiles lock onto vehicles and aircraft. To land, line up with a long runway such as Los Santos International or the Sandy Shores airfield, lower the gear, reduce speed and touch down gently. Practice at Flight School in GTA Online or with a smaller plane in story mode before taking the Lazer out.
Getting away with your wanted level
A four-star wanted level brings military and police aircraft. Fly out over the ocean, stay low to break line of sight, and keep moving until the stars start flashing, which means the police have lost track of you. Avoid flying straight back over the city, where you will meet more police. In story mode, changing characters is not possible during a wanted level, so plan your escape before you break in. If you get shot down, the nearest hospital will be in Paleto Bay or Sandy Shores.

Is it easier to steal a jet in GTA Online?
