Many of the best money-makers in GTA Online, such as Special Cargo, Vehicle Cargo, Bunker sales and many Nightclub and Acid Lab actions, require you to be a CEO or VIP. This guide shows exactly how to register as a CEO in GTA 5 Online, the cheaper VIP alternative, what each role unlocks and how to retire.

CEO vs VIP: what is the difference?

How to register as a CEO in GTA 5

  1. Buy an Executive Office. Open your in-game phone, go to the Internet, select Money and Services > Dynasty 8 Executive, and buy one of the four offices: Maze Bank West, Lombank West, Arcadius Business Center or Maze Bank Tower. Maze Bank West is the cheapest and well located.
  2. Open the Interaction Menu. Hold the touchpad (PS5), View button (Xbox) or press M (PC).
  3. Select SecuroServ.
  4. Select Register as a CEO. Your organization is created instantly and you can name it.

You stay a CEO until you retire or leave the session. To retire, open Interaction Menu > SecuroServ > Retire.

How to become a VIP (free option)

  1. Have at least $50,000 in your bank or cash.
  2. Open the Interaction Menu > SecuroServ > Register as a VIP.

VIP status lasts four hours of play, then you wait 48 in-game minutes before registering again. It is enough to do VIP Work missions such as Headhunter and Sightseer, which pay well for new players, and to act as a stand-in boss for friends.

What you can do as a CEO

  • Special Cargo: buy warehouses and source crates for big sell missions.
  • Vehicle Cargo: steal and export high-end cars with a Vehicle Warehouse.
  • CEO Work and Challenges: short missions like Headhunter (about $20,000-$25,000) and Sightseer.
  • Run other businesses: the Nightclub, Agency, Acid Lab and Arcade have actions that work better or only as a boss. See the Acid Lab guide.
  • Hire associates: invite up to seven players to your organization and pay them a salary.

Can you register as a CEO and an MC President at the same time?

No. You can only be one boss role at a time: CEO, VIP or MC President. Retire from one to register as the other. Some businesses, such as the Bunker and MC businesses, can be operated as either a CEO or an MC President.

Step by step: registering as a CEO

  1. Earn or save at least $1,000,000 for the cheapest Executive Office. Offices are sold on the Dynasty 8 Executive website on the in-game phone or computer.
  2. Buy an office in one of the four buildings: Maze Bank West, Lombank West, Arcadius Business Center or Maze Bank Tower. Location matters more than decoration, so pick the one closest to where you spend your time.
  3. Open the Interaction Menu (hold the touchpad on PlayStation, hold View on Xbox, or press M on PC).
  4. Select SecuroServ, then Register as a CEO.
  5. Choose your organization name and style, then confirm. You can now hire up to seven associates and start CEO work.

What CEO work and challenges pay

CEO Work includes jobs such as Headhunter, Sightseer and Hostile Takeover. They pay a fixed amount, usually tens of thousands of GTA dollars, and can be repeated after a short cooldown. Headhunter and Sightseer are popular because they can be completed quickly and solo. CEO Challenges are competitive activities between members of your organization. Most of the real money comes from businesses that require CEO status, such as Special Cargo warehouses, Vehicle Cargo and some Nightclub and Arcade activities.

Businesses that need you to be a CEO

  • Special Cargo: buy warehouses, source crates and sell them in bulk.
  • Vehicle Cargo (Import/Export): steal high-end cars and deliver them to buyers.
  • Nightclub management: some activities require you to be a CEO or VIP.
  • The Agency and Auto Shop: managed through their own menus but often linked with organization play.

Associates and bodyguards

As a CEO you can invite players as associates or bodyguards. They earn a salary paid by Rockstar, not from your bank, and they help with missions, protect you during sales and can launch some jobs. Friends who do not own an office can make good money this way, and the arrangement is a common way to learn the game. You can set a wage level and kick inactive members.

Cooldowns and limits

After you stop being a CEO, there is a cooldown before you can register again, and after leaving an organization as an associate there is a short wait before joining another. CEO Work also has cooldowns between jobs. You cannot be a CEO and a Motorcycle Club President at the same time, so switch roles depending on which business you want to run. Rockstar adjusts cooldowns and payouts in updates, so check the latest patch notes.

Is it worth becoming a CEO?

Yes for most players who plan to keep playing GTA Online. The office itself costs a lot, but it unlocks several of the best money makers and gives your group a base. If you are short on money, become a VIP first, which only needs $50,000 in your bank and gives access to similar VIP Work. Then buy the office when your income allows. For a cheaper starter business that does not need an office, see the Acid Lab guide.

CEO FAQ

How much does it cost to become a CEO in GTA 5?

The cheapest Executive Office costs $1,000,000. Registering itself is free once you own an office.

Can you become a CEO without an office?

No, but you can become a VIP with $50,000 in the bank, which works in a similar way for VIP Work.

How long does CEO status last?

As long as you want while you stay in the session. You can retire from the Interaction Menu at any time.

Can I be a CEO in an invite-only session?

Yes. Most CEO Work and many sell missions can be done in invite-only or friends-only sessions, although some payouts are higher in public sessions.

Our recommended first steps as a CEO

Buy the office, then a single small Special Cargo warehouse near your office, and run Headhunter or Sightseer while crates arrive. Once you have a steady income, add a vehicle warehouse for Import/Export, which pays well with a friend helping. Keep your organization small and active rather than inviting strangers, and always sell cargo in invite-only sessions until you are confident.

CEO vs MC President vs VIP

All three are organization roles. A VIP needs $50,000 in the bank and gets access to VIP Work and challenges. A CEO needs an Executive Office and unlocks warehouse businesses and Import/Export. An MC President needs a Clubhouse and runs Motorcycle Club businesses such as the Bunker supply chain and drug businesses. You can switch between roles freely, but only hold one at a time. Many experienced players keep both an office and a clubhouse and switch depending on which business needs attention.

Becoming a CEO is the step that turns GTA Online from a series of jobs into a business empire. Start small, reinvest your profits, and bring friends along as associates to make the grind faster and more fun.
