How Do You Beat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft? Crystals, Perching and the Kill

Step by step: prepare for the End, destroy the end crystals, fight the Ender Dragon when it perches, and what you get.

The Ender Dragon is the only true boss in Minecraft and the closest thing the game has to an ending. If you are stuck, the problem is usually the order of operations: you cannot out-damage the healing from the end crystals, and you cannot fight well while falling into the void or being knocked off a pillar. This guide gives you a clear plan: what to bring, how to destroy the crystals safely, how the dragon behaves, how to kill it, and what happens after. It works for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, and it points out the small differences.

Defeating the Ender Dragon is easy in Minecraft

Why players get stuck

The common causes are fighting the dragon before destroying the crystals, getting hit by the dragon breath clouds, being knocked into the void, and attacking at the wrong time. The dragon follows a predictable flight pattern, circling the central island and diving at players, so learning that rhythm turns an overwhelming fight into a routine.

Before you enter the End

You must find the Stronghold that houses the End portal and activate it. This is often the longest step. Locate it with Eyes of Ender, then fill the portal frame. Prepare before you jump in, because you cannot easily return once the fight starts.

  • Armor and weapons: strong armor, a sword and a bow with plenty of arrows.
  • Blocks: a stack of cobblestone or dirt to build safe platforms and climb the pillars.
  • Water bucket: to slow falls and handle endermen.
  • Food and healing: enchanted golden apples if you have them.
  • Beds: they explode in the End and are a powerful weapon against a perched dragon.
  • A way to avoid endermen: do not look at them, or carry a pumpkin to wear.

The arena

The End is a floating island surrounded by void. Obsidian pillars of different heights surround the center, with an end crystal on top of each. Some crystals are protected by iron bars. In the middle is the bedrock fountain where the dragon perches and where the exit portal appears after the fight. Falling off the island means falling into the void, so build barriers and be careful near the edges.

Step 1: Destroy the end crystals

There are 10 end crystals in total. They heal the Ender Dragon with beams that connect to its body, so they must go first. Use arrows to shoot crystals on tall or caged pillars, and climb or pearl up the rest to hit them in melee.

  • Crystals explode when destroyed, so keep your distance or destroy them at range. A crystal that blows up near the dragon deals about 10 health points of damage to it.
  • For caged crystals, build up beside the pillar and break the bars, or use a bow from below.
  • Keep an eye on the dragon between shots. If it dives, get behind cover.

Step 2: Survive the dragon behaviors

  • Wing and body hits deal about 10 health points and knock you back. Do not stand near its head or wings when it dives.
  • Dragon breath leaves purple clouds that damage over time, roughly 3.5 health per second. Step out of them. You can collect them in a glass bottle.
  • Fireball effect clouds do about 6 health per second.
  • Endermen attack if you look at them. Avoid eye contact, or use water for safety.

Step 3: Kill the dragon when it perches

After the crystals are gone, the dragon periodically lands on the bedrock fountain at the center of the island. This is your damage window. Attack it from behind as it descends, avoiding its head and wings.

  • Bed method: place a bed next to the perched dragon and right-click it. Each explosion deals heavy damage, and it can take the dragon down in a few blasts. Tuck into the exit portal pit for cover.
  • Sword method: strike while it is perched. The dragon has 200 health, so a few rounds of good hits is enough.
  • Bow method: shoot the dragon while it is airborne after the crystals are gone. It is immune to arrows while perched.

Speedrunners have developed faster approaches, such as the one-cycle and zero-cycle methods in Java, but they take practice. For a first kill, the steady approach is fine.

After the kill

When the dragon dies it explodes into an XP burst: 12,000 experience on the first kill in both Java and Bedrock, which is enough for high enchanting levels. Respawned kills give 500. A dragon egg appears on the central pillar on the first kill in Java, and on the first and second kill in Bedrock. The exit portal opens and leads to the credits and your spawn point. Now the End is safe to explore, including the End Cities and ships that can hold elytra.

Can you respawn the dragon?

Yes. Place four end crystals on the four sides of the exit portal pedestal to bring the dragon back.

Common mistakes

  • Attacking the dragon before the crystals are gone.
  • Standing in dragon breath clouds.
  • Looking at endermen.
  • Not bringing enough blocks or arrows.
  • Fighting near the edge of the island.

Quick checklist

  1. Find the stronghold and light the portal.
  2. Pack armor, a bow, blocks, water and beds.
  3. Destroy all 10 crystals.
  4. Wait for the dragon to perch.
  5. Use beds or melee hits to finish it.
  6. Collect your XP and take the exit portal.

Safer ways to handle the crystals

Caged crystals are the hardest part of the first step. Build up next to the pillar using blocks, break the bars and destroy the crystal, then step back and let the explosion pass before you build down. If the dragon dives while you are climbing, drop behind cover and shoot the next crystal from below. Moving in a loop around the island keeps you away from the dragon and lets you clear pillars in order. Some players clear the short pillars first to learn the rhythm, and save the tall caged ones for when the dragon is farther away.

If you keep losing the fight: quick diagnosis

  • The dragon never loses health: a crystal is still alive and healing it. Look for beams connecting to its body.
  • You fall into the void: build a barrier around the platform edge and never fight near the drop.
  • You die to the breath cloud: move out of purple clouds immediately.
  • Endermen keep attacking: do not look at them, or wear a carved pumpkin.
  • The dragon never perches: this means crystals remain, so check the cages and tall pillars.

Pre-fight checklist

  1. Armor, sword, bow and a lot of arrows.
  2. A stack or two of blocks.
  3. A water bucket and golden apples.
  4. Beds, if you plan to use the explosion method.
  5. A pumpkin or a plan to avoid endermen.

Quick recap

  • Destroy all 10 crystals first.
  • Attack when the dragon perches.
  • Collect 12,000 XP and take the exit portal.
