How Do You Beat the Warden in Minecraft? Strategies, Weak Spots and When to Run

How to beat or avoid the Warden in Minecraft: stats, attacks, the tower strategy, other methods and why escaping can be smarter.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated November 3, 2026

The Warden is the strongest mob in Minecraft, and the Ancient City is where players meet it and get stuck. It is blind, it hunts by vibration and smell, and its attacks can end a fight in two hits. This guide explains how the Warden works, what its attacks do, how to kill it using safer methods, and why walking away is often the smartest option. The video above covers the key mechanics in motion.

Everything you need to know about the Warden in Minecraft 1.21

Why the Warden is so hard

The Warden has 500 health points, 250 hearts, which is more than the Ender Dragon. Its melee hit can kill a player in full Netherite armor in two or three hits, with damage around 30 on Normal and higher on Hard. Its ranged attack, the sonic boom, ignores armor, shields and protection enchantments and passes through blocks. It also applies Darkness, which reduces your vision. The Warden is slow compared with the player but catches up quickly, and it is immune to knockback.

How the Warden spawns

The Warden is found in the Deep Dark, in and around the Ancient City. It spawns when a naturally generated sculk shrieker issues four warnings to a player, usually because you made noise or triggered vibrations. Sculk sensors and shriekers detect vibrations from walking, placing blocks and fighting. If the Warden loses track of you and no threat is detected for about 60 seconds, it digs back into the ground.

How it finds you

The Warden is blind. It detects vibrations and smell, so sneaking reduces the noise you make. It also uses a sniff attack to find you, and it can pursue you across the Ancient City. If it cannot reach you, it uses the sonic boom, which has a range of about 15 to 20 blocks.

Method 1: the tower and bow strategy

The most reliable method uses height and distance.

  1. Enter the Ancient City while sneaking.
  2. Prepare a high position. Guides suggest a tower around six blocks or taller next to a shelter, and a build 20 blocks up if you can, so the Warden cannot hit you with a sonic boom.
  3. Trigger a sculk shrieker to bring the Warden out, then retreat to the tower.
  4. Fire arrows with a bow enchanted with Power and Infinity. Keep your distance, because the sonic boom has a range limit.
  5. If your health gets low, drop into your shelter to heal and reset.

The fight takes a long time because of its 500 health, so bring multiple bows and lots of arrows.

Method 2: let allies fight it

Some players bring iron golems. Six golems can defeat one Warden if they fight together. Others use the Wither as a distraction, setting it up in a controlled cavity near the Ancient City so the two mobs fight each other. This is advanced and risky, so confirm your escape route first.

Method 3: environmental tricks

Dripstone drop methods can work but need a lot of setup. Lava does not work because the Warden is immune to it. Trapping it in a box and attacking its feet does not work well either, because it switches to the sonic boom before you can deal enough damage.

What to bring

  • Armor: diamond or Netherite with Protection IV. It helps against melee, though not against the sonic boom.
  • Resistance: potions of Resistance soften sonic boom hits. Turtle Master potions give Resistance but slow you down a lot.
  • Night Vision: to counter the Darkness effect.
  • Ranged weapons: a bow with Power V and Infinity, plus spare bows.
  • Healing and food: golden apples and good food.
  • Blocks: for towers, barriers and quick shelters.

Should you even fight it?

The Warden does not guard a unique boss reward. Killing it gives experience and a Sculk Catalyst. The real treasure is in the Ancient City chests. Mojang designed this mob to be avoided, not necessarily fought. The best strategy is knowing when the fight is no longer worth it. If your health drops, your armor is damaged or you run low on food and healing items, stop attacking and leave.

How to avoid it entirely

  • Sneak through the city and never sprint.
  • Avoid placing blocks or fighting near shriekers.
  • Use Silk Touch to collect sculk shriekers safely.
  • Use wool to dampen vibrations when moving through the city.
  • Loot the chests quickly and leave through your prepared exit.

Common mistakes

  • Fighting in melee with armor and trusting it to protect you.
  • Hiding behind a wall and assuming it blocks the sonic boom.
  • Fighting with only one bow and not enough arrows.
  • Triggering shriekers while looting.

How the Warden compares to other bosses

  • Warden: 500 health, very high melee damage, ranged sonic boom that ignores armor.
  • Ender Dragon: 200 health, but healed by crystals and attacked in a defined arena.
  • Wither: 300 health in Java, with ranged skull attacks.

The Warden is not a gated boss with a reward, which is why many players treat it as a hazard to avoid. Sculk sensors and shriekers around the city are what bring it out, and the Sculk Catalyst it drops is the only item that makes a kill worthwhile.

Sculk blocks to know

Sculk sensors detect vibrations, sculk shriekers issue the warnings that summon the Warden, and sculk catalysts spread sculk when mobs die nearby. Walking quietly, sneaking and avoiding blocks that produce vibrations keeps the shriekers quiet. Wool blocks and carpet dampen some vibrations, so players use them on routes through the city.

If you keep losing the fight: quick diagnosis

  • You die in two hits: you are in melee range. Fight from a tower and keep your distance.
  • You keep getting hit by sonic booms: get farther away or higher up, because the range is limited.
  • Your arrows run out: bring Infinity and spare bows, since the fight is long.
  • New Wardens keep spawning: stop triggering shriekers and fight away from them.
  • You are not sure it is worth it: it usually is not. Take the chest loot and go.

Pre-fight checklist

  1. Best armor, Resistance potions and Night Vision.
  2. Two or more bows with Power and Infinity.
  3. Blocks for a tower and a shelter.
  4. Golden apples and food.
  5. A planned exit route.

Quick recap

  • 500 health, blind, hunts by vibration.
  • Sonic boom ignores armor and passes through blocks.
  • Tower and bow is the safest kill.
  • Killing it gives XP and a Sculk Catalyst only.

Frequently asked questions

How much health does the Warden have?

500 health points, or 250 hearts.

Can armor block the sonic boom?

No. It ignores armor, shields and protection enchantments.

What does the Warden drop?

Experience and a Sculk Catalyst.

Can I outrun it?

It is slower than a player, but it catches up quickly. Sneak and leave.

Does the Warden respawn?

It can spawn again when shriekers warn you four times.

Is it safe to hide behind blocks?

No. The sonic boom passes through blocks, so distance and height matter more than walls.

Can iron golems help?

Yes. A group of six golems can beat a Warden, though it is still risky.

What reduces the sonic boom?

Only the Resistance status effect reduces it. Armor and enchantments do not.
