Step 1: Get books
A book is crafted from 3 paper and 1 leather. That means each bookshelf costs 9 paper and 3 leather in total.

Open a crafting table, put 3 planks in the top row, 3 books in the middle row and 3 planks in the bottom row, then take the bookshelf from the output.
Other ways to get bookshelves
- Villages: library buildings in villages contain bookshelves. Mine them for books, or use Silk Touch to collect the bookshelf block itself.
- Strongholds: stronghold libraries have dozens of bookshelves.
- Woodland mansions: some rooms are full of bookshelves.
Breaking a bookshelf without Silk Touch drops 3 books, so you lose the planks but keep the books. With Silk Touch you get the bookshelf block. Stronghold libraries are one of the fastest ways to collect dozens of books at once.
How to set up 15 bookshelves for level 30 enchantments
The enchanting table counts bookshelves around it within a 5 by 5 area, with one block of empty space between the table and the shelves.
- Place the enchanting table in the middle of a space at least 5 by 5 blocks.
- Leave one block of air on every side of the table.
- Place bookshelves in a ring around that gap, on the same level as the table or one block higher.
- Use 15 bookshelves in total, for example a ring of 16 spaces with one gap for the entrance.
The gap between the table and the shelves must be completely empty. Torches, carpets, snow layers or other blocks in that gap stop the bookshelves from counting. The easiest layout is two rows high on three sides with an open doorway on the fourth, or a full ring one high on the floor and a few shelves stacked above. When it works, you see little symbols floating from the bookshelves into the table.

Chiseled bookshelf
The chiseled bookshelf is a decorative shelf that actually holds books.
- Recipe: 6 planks in the top and bottom rows and 3 wooden slabs in the middle row.
- Storage: it holds up to 6 books, enchanted books, books and quills or written books. Use a book on a slot to place it and use the slot again to take it out.
- Redstone: a comparator next to it outputs a signal based on the last slot you changed, which players use for secret doors and puzzles.
- Enchanting: chiseled bookshelves do not power an enchanting table. Use normal bookshelves for that.

Library build ideas
- Line a room with bookshelves two blocks high and put the enchanting table on a carpet in the center.
- Mix bookshelves with chiseled bookshelves for variety. Only the regular ones count for enchanting.
- Add lanterns, lecterns and a few potted plants for a cozy study.
- Use spruce or dark oak planks for an old library feel, or birch for a bright modern one.
Common bookshelf mistakes
- Using the wrong books: the recipe needs plain books. Enchanted books, written books and books and quills do not work, so keep a stack of plain books for crafting.
- Shelves too close: a bookshelf touching the enchanting table does not count. There must be exactly one empty block between them.
- Shelves too high: only shelves on the same level as the table or one block above count. A third row is decoration only.
- Fire near shelves: a lit fireplace or lava lamp in a wooden library can burn the whole room. Use glass, stone or a soul campfire behind a block if you want a fireplace nearby.
- Breaking shelves for planks: breaking a bookshelf without Silk Touch gives back the books, not the planks, so plan where you place them before you build.
