How to Make a Copper Golem in Minecraft (and What It Does)

How to make a copper golem in Minecraft: place a carved pumpkin on a copper block. Learn how it sorts items, how to stop oxidation, and how to build a storage room.

The copper golem is a small, clanking helper that sorts your items. It arrived in The Copper Age drop in 2025, more than four years after it first appeared in a mob vote and lost. Now you can build one in Survival, watch it carry items from copper chests into your storage, and decide whether to let it age into a green statue or keep it shiny with wax. This guide explains how to make a copper golem in Minecraft, what it does, how its sorting works, how to stop it oxidizing, and how to set up a storage room around it.

Quick answer: how to make a copper golem

  1. Place a block of copper on the ground. Any oxidation stage works.
  2. Place a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top of it. The pumpkin must be the last block placed.
  3. The copper golem spawns, and the copper block turns into a copper chest with the same oxidation level.

That is the whole recipe: one copper block and one carved pumpkin. Unlike the iron golem, you do not need a T shape.

Step 1: Get a block of copper

Copper ore is common between Y levels 0 and 96, especially around Y 48, and it is very common in dripstone caves. Mine copper ore with a stone pickaxe or better to get raw copper, smelt raw copper into copper ingots, and craft nine ingots into a block of copper. A Fortune pickaxe gives much more raw copper per ore. See what copper is used for.

Step 2: Carve a pumpkin

Find pumpkins in most grassy biomes, or grow them from pumpkin seeds. Hold shears and use them on a placed pumpkin to carve a face into it, which also drops four pumpkin seeds. Pick up the carved pumpkin by breaking it. A jack o’lantern, made from a carved pumpkin and a torch, also works. Read how to make a carved pumpkin.

Step 3: Build the copper golem

Place the copper block where you want the golem’s chest to be, ideally inside your storage room. Then place the carved pumpkin on top. The golem appears in a burst of particles, and the copper block becomes its copper chest. The golem copies the copper’s oxidation: a fresh copper block makes a shiny orange golem, and a fully oxidized block makes a green one that is closer to becoming a statue.

What does a copper golem do?

The copper golem is an item sorter. It looks for copper chests nearby, picks up a stack of items (up to 16 at a time), then searches for regular chests or trapped chests that are either empty or already contain the same item, and drops the items there. It repeats this over and over, slowly organizing your storage. It opens and closes chests with little animations, and it will occasionally press copper buttons. Players use it as a simple, cute alternative to redstone sorting systems.

How the sorting logic works

  • The golem searches for copper chests within a large area around it.
  • It takes items from any copper chest, whether waxed or oxidized.
  • It places items into chests that already hold that item, or into empty chests.
  • If no chest matches, it wanders and tries again later.

The trick to good sorting is to put one example item in each storage chest. For example, place one cobblestone in a chest labeled for stone, and the golem will fill that chest with cobblestone from your copper chest.

Copper golem oxidation and statues

Like other copper blocks, the copper golem oxidizes over time, turning from orange to brown, then teal and finally green. A fully oxidized golem eventually freezes into a copper golem statue block in a random pose. It drops any item it was holding and keeps its name if you named it. Statues make charming decorations, and you can revive one by scraping it with an axe.

How to stop a copper golem from oxidizing

Use honeycomb on the golem to wax it. A waxed golem stays at its current oxidation stage forever. To get honeycomb, harvest bee nests with shears; see how to get honeycomb. To reverse oxidation, use an axe on the golem to scrape it back one stage. Lightning strikes also remove oxidation.

Copper chests

The copper chest that appears when you build a golem is a full storage chest. You can also craft copper chests from a regular chest surrounded by copper ingots. Copper chests oxidize and can be waxed like any copper block. They act as the input chests for golem sorting, so place one near the entrance of your storage room and drop everything into it after an adventure.

Building a storage room for your golem

  1. Clear a room and line the walls with regular chests at ground level and one block up, within the golem’s reach.
  2. Put one sample item in each chest and label them with item frames or signs.
  3. Place one or more copper chests near the center as input chests.
  4. Build the golem next to them, or move it there with a lead.
  5. Wax the golem so it never freezes into a statue mid-job.

Add more golems for faster sorting in large storage rooms. Each golem works independently, so two or three golems can process items much faster than one.

Copper golems and iron golems

Iron golems sometimes plant a flower on a nearby copper golem’s head, a small easter egg that players love. Copper golems do not fight mobs, so you still need iron golems, walls and lighting to protect villages and bases.

Common copper golem problems

  • The golem does not spawn: the pumpkin was not the last block placed, or the block underneath is not a full block of copper. Cut copper and copper grates do not work.
  • The golem ignores my chests: make sure the chests are regular or trapped chests, not barrels or shulker boxes, and that they contain a matching item or are empty.
  • The golem keeps putting items in the wrong chest: it will use any empty chest for unmatched items. Fill every chest with at least one sample item.
  • My golem turned into a statue: scrape it with an axe to revive it, then wax it.
  • The golem wandered off: keep it in a closed room with doors it cannot open, such as iron doors, or use a lead.

Java vs Bedrock

Copper golems work the same on Java and Bedrock Edition. Sorting range, oxidation and waxing behave the same, though tiny timing differences can make Bedrock golems seem slightly faster or slower. Both editions let you name golems with name tags to keep track of several helpers.

Copper golem FAQ

How do you make a copper golem in Minecraft?

Place a carved pumpkin on top of a block of copper.

How do you get a copper golem?

You build one; copper golems do not spawn naturally.

What does a copper golem do?

It sorts items from copper chests into matching chests nearby.

Can a copper golem die?

It can be killed by damage, and it turns into a statue if it fully oxidizes. Wax it to prevent that.

Can you make a copper golem with oxidized copper?

Yes, but it starts at that oxidation level and will become a statue sooner.
