Saddles let you ride and steer horses, donkeys, mules, camels, pigs and striders. For most of Minecraft’s history you could not craft a saddle and had to find one in a chest, which made riding a matter of luck. That changed in 2025: saddles are now craftable in both editions. This guide shows how to make a saddle in Minecraft, the exact recipe, other ways to get saddles, which mobs you can ride, and how to remove a saddle, in Java and Bedrock Edition.
How to make a saddle in Minecraft
In Java Edition 1.21.6 and later and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 and later, craft a saddle on a crafting table with 3 leather and 1 iron ingot.
| Row | Left | Middle | Right |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Empty | Leather | Empty |
| Middle | Leather | Iron ingot | Leather |
| Bottom | Empty | Empty | Empty |
The iron ingot goes in the center, with one leather above it and one on each side. The recipe unlocks in your recipe book when you pick up your first leather, so if you are not sure of the shape, open the recipe book and search for saddle. If you play an older version, the recipe does not exist, and you need one of the other methods below.
Getting the materials
- Leather: kill cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas or hoglins, or craft 4 rabbit hide into 1 leather. A cow farm makes leather renewable; see how to make a book for leather tips.
- Iron ingot: mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe or better and smelt the raw iron, or kill iron golems.
That means a saddle costs about one cow farm session and a single iron ingot, which is far cheaper than searching dungeons.
Other ways to get a saddle
| Method | Details |
|---|---|
| Crafting | 3 leather + 1 iron ingot, the easiest and most reliable method |
| Chest loot | Villages, Nether fortresses, bastions, desert temples, jungle temples, strongholds and end cities, among others. Since the crafting update, some chests that used to hold saddles now hold leather instead. |
| Fishing | Saddles can be caught as rare treasure |
| Villager trading | Master-level leatherworkers sell saddles for emeralds |
| Ravagers | Ravagers drop a saddle when killed |
| Saddled mobs | Saddled pigs and striders drop their saddle when they die, and you can shear a saddle off most mounts |
Which mobs can you saddle?
| Mob | How to control it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Horse | Tame, then saddle; steer normally | The fastest common mount. See how to tame horses. |
| Donkey and mule | Tame, then saddle | Can carry a chest for storage |
| Camel | Saddle, no taming needed | Carries two players and can dash |
| Pig | Saddle, then steer with a carrot on a stick | Slow but fun |
| Strider | Saddle, then steer with a warped fungus on a stick | Walks on lava in the Nether |
| Nautilus | Tame with pufferfish, then saddle | Rides underwater; see nautilus guide |
Llamas do not use saddles: you can ride a tamed llama, but you cannot steer it. Happy ghasts use a harness instead of a saddle.
How to put on a saddle
- Tame the mob first if it needs taming, such as horses, donkeys and mules.
- Hold the saddle and use it on the mob. For horses, you can also open the horse inventory while riding and place the saddle in the saddle slot.
- Use the mob again to mount it. Press sneak to dismount.
How to remove a saddle
For horses, donkeys, mules and camels, open the mount’s inventory while riding it and drag the saddle out. In current versions you can also use shears on a saddled mob that has no rider to remove the saddle, which works on pigs and striders too. In older versions, a pig or strider saddle could only be recovered by killing the mob.
Saddle vs horse armor
A saddle only lets you ride and steer. Horse armor adds protection and goes in a separate slot. Leather horse armor can be crafted and dyed; iron, gold and diamond horse armor come from loot chests and trading. Only horses can wear horse armor, while donkeys and mules carry chests instead.
Tips for riding
- Name your horse with a name tag so it never despawns and is easy to find.
- Use a lead to tie your mount to a fence when you go inside.
- Horses cannot climb into boats, but leads can drag them along water.
- Breed fast horses together to get faster foals.
- Striders are the safest way to cross big lava lakes in the Nether.
- Camels are tall, so most hostile mobs cannot reach a rider on top.
Why some guides say you cannot craft a saddle
Many older guides were written before the crafting recipe was added in 2025, when saddles were loot-only. If your recipe book does not show the saddle, update your game to the latest version, or check that you are not playing an old modpack or a server pinned to an older version.
Java vs Bedrock
The saddle recipe is the same in both editions, added in Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90. Loot sources and riding controls are almost identical. Bedrock touch controls show on-screen buttons for mounting, dismounting and jumping.
Saddle FAQ
How do you make a saddle in Minecraft?
Craft 3 leather and 1 iron ingot on a crafting table: iron in the center, leather above and on both sides.
Can you craft a saddle in Bedrock?
Yes, in Bedrock 1.21.90 and later.
When were saddles made craftable?
In 2025, with Java 1.21.6 and the matching Bedrock release.
Can you remove a saddle from a pig?
Yes. Use shears on the pig when nobody is riding it.
Do llamas need a saddle?
No. Llamas cannot be steered, so saddles do not apply.
Where saddles still appear in chests
Even with crafting available, saddles still show up in many structure chests, so it pays to check loot as you explore. Village chests, especially in tannery and weaponsmith houses, Nether fortress chests, bastion remnant chests and some temple chests can hold saddles. End city chests are another source late in the game. If you find extras, store them in a chest by your stable, because every horse, donkey, mule and camel you want to ride needs its own saddle.
Best mounts to use your saddle on
For everyday travel on land, a fast horse is the best choice, especially once you breed for speed and jump strength. Donkeys and mules are slower but carry a chest, which makes them ideal for long exploration trips and moving supplies. Camels are great in deserts and villages because they carry two players and are tall enough to keep most zombies away. In the Nether, a strider with a warped fungus on a stick turns dangerous lava oceans into safe roads. Pigs are mostly for fun and for the When Pigs Fly achievement, which asks you to ride a pig off a cliff.
Saddle durability
Saddles never break or lose durability, no matter how far you ride. You can move one saddle between mounts as often as you like, which is why one or two saddles are enough for most players. The only way to lose a saddle is if a saddled pig or strider dies somewhere you cannot reach, or the mob falls into lava with the saddle on.
Saddles stack only to 1, so each one takes a full inventory slot; keep spares in a chest rather than carrying them.
If the saddle recipe is missing even on the latest version, make sure you are using a 3 by 3 crafting table rather than the inventory grid, since the shape does not fit in a 2 by 2 grid.
Saddled mobs also show the saddle on their model, so you can see at a glance which horses in your stable are ready to ride.
