A shield is the best defensive item you can make early in Minecraft. Raise it and it blocks almost all damage from the front: skeleton arrows, zombie hits, creeper blasts and even crossbow bolts from pillagers. It costs only one iron ingot, so it is worth crafting as soon as you smelt your first iron. This guide explains how to make a shield in Minecraft, how to block properly, whether you can enchant a shield, how to decorate it with a banner and how to repair it.
Quick answer: shield recipe
| Plank | Iron ingot | Plank |
| Plank | Plank | Plank |
| Empty | Plank | Empty |
6 wooden planks and 1 iron ingot make 1 shield. Any type of planks works, and you can mix types. The recipe is the same in every edition.
How to get the ingredients
- Planks: one log gives 4 planks, so two logs are enough.
- Iron ingot: mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe, then smelt the raw iron in a furnace. See where to find iron.
How to use a shield
Equip it
Put the shield in your offhand slot so you can attack with your main hand and block with the other. On Java, press F (or the swap hands key) while holding it. On Bedrock, drag it into the offhand slot in your inventory.
Block
- Java Edition: hold the use button (right mouse button) to raise the shield. It takes a quarter of a second to come up.
- Bedrock Edition: sneak to raise the shield automatically, or hold the use button on some controls.
While raised, the shield blocks damage from attacks in front of you. You move slowly while blocking, so lower it when you want to run.
What a shield blocks
- Melee attacks from zombies, skeletons, piglins, vindicators and players.
- Arrows, tridents, crossbow bolts and fireballs from the front.
- Most of the damage from creeper and TNT explosions in front of you.
What it does not block
- Attacks from behind or the side.
- Fall damage, fire, lava, poison and potion effects.
- The Warden’s sonic boom, which goes straight through shields.
Axes disable shields
If an enemy hits your raised shield with an axe, your shield is disabled for about 5 seconds. Vindicators carry axes, so watch out during raids. You can use this against other players in PvP: switch to an axe to break their block.
Can you enchant a shield in Minecraft?
Yes, but not on an enchanting table. You need an anvil and an enchanted book. Shields can have only three enchantments:
| Enchantment | What it does |
|---|---|
| Unbreaking (I to III) | The shield loses durability more slowly. |
| Mending | Collected experience repairs the shield. |
| Curse of Vanishing | The shield disappears when you die. |
Unbreaking III and Mending together make a shield that lasts forever. Put the shield in the first slot of an anvil and the book in the second. See how to get Mending and how to make an anvil.
How to put a banner on a shield
- Make a banner from 6 wool of one color and 1 stick, and add patterns on a loom if you like. See how to make banners.
- Put the shield and the banner together in a crafting grid.
- The shield now shows the banner’s design.
The banner is used up. A shield can only have one banner. On Java Edition you can wash the design off again by using the shield on a cauldron filled with water. Banners do not change how the shield works, only how it looks, but team colors on shields look great on servers.
Shield durability and repair
A shield has 336 durability. It loses durability when it blocks damage of 3 or more, with bigger hits costing more. You can repair it in three ways:
- Anvil with planks: put the shield and wooden planks in an anvil to restore durability.
- Anvil or grindstone with another shield: combine two damaged shields. A grindstone removes enchantments.
- Mending: repairs it with experience while it is in your offhand.
See how to repair tools in Minecraft.
Shields in Java vs Bedrock
The recipe and enchantments are the same. The main difference is controls: Java players hold the use button to block, while Bedrock players block by sneaking. Bedrock shields also raise instantly when you sneak, which makes blocking easy on touch screens and controllers. Damage reduction and axe disabling work similarly in both editions.
Tips
- Craft a shield before your first Nether trip. Ghast fireballs and skeleton arrows are much easier to handle.
- Block a creeper’s explosion by raising your shield as it flashes.
- Against skeletons, walk toward them with your shield raised, then lower it to strike.
- In raids, keep your distance from vindicators so they cannot disable your shield.
Shield strategy for common fights
- Skeletons and strays: raise the shield while walking toward them so their arrows bounce off, then lower it for a quick strike when you are close. Strafing sideways while blocking makes you harder to hit.
- Creepers: if a creeper starts hissing next to you, step back and raise the shield. You will take far less damage, and your armor stays in better shape.
- Pillagers and raids: pillagers’ crossbow bolts are blocked by a raised shield, but vindicators’ axes disable it. Fight vindicators with a sword from a little distance and save the shield for pillagers.
- Blazes and ghasts: fireballs from the front are blocked, which makes Nether fortresses much safer. You can even reflect a ghast fireball by hitting it, though the shield alone simply absorbs it.
- Other players: in PvP, timing matters. Raise the shield when your opponent swings, and switch to an axe yourself to break their block.
Common problems
- The shield will not go up: on Java, make sure you are holding the use button, not tapping it. On Bedrock, sneak to block.
- I still take damage: the attack came from the side or behind, or it was a type of damage shields cannot stop, such as fire or poison.
- The enchantment will not apply: shields only accept Unbreaking, Mending and Curse of Vanishing, and only on an anvil.
