How to Make an Armor Stand in Minecraft (Recipe, Poses and Arms)

How to make an armor stand in Minecraft: the crafting recipe, how to get the smooth stone slab, displaying armor, changing poses and giving it arms.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated November 5, 2026

Armor stands let you show off your gear, keep a spare set ready by the door, or decorate a castle hall with knights. They are cheap to craft once you know the one tricky ingredient: a smooth stone slab. This guide shows how to make an armor stand in Minecraft, how to get the materials, how to put armor on it, how to change its pose, how to give it arms, and some useful tricks.

Quick answer: armor stand recipe

You need 6 sticks and 1 smooth stone slab. On a crafting table, place them like this:

StickStickStick
EmptyStickEmpty
StickSmooth stone slabStick

Take the armor stand from the output. The recipe is the same on Java, Bedrock and every console.

Step 1: Make sticks

Place 2 wooden planks on top of each other in the crafting grid to get 4 sticks. Any type of wood works. Two crafts give you the 6 sticks you need plus 2 spare. See how to make sticks.

Step 2: Make a smooth stone slab

This is where most players get stuck, because a normal stone slab or cobblestone slab does not work. You need smooth stone.

  1. Smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get stone.
  2. Smelt the stone again to get smooth stone.
  3. Place 3 smooth stone in a row on a crafting table to get 6 smooth stone slabs, or use a stonecutter to get 2 slabs from 1 smooth stone.

So one armor stand costs one cobblestone smelted twice, plus a little extra if you craft slabs in batches. See how to make smooth stone.

Step 3: Craft and place the armor stand

Craft the stand with the pattern above, then place it on the ground like a block. It faces the direction you are looking, rounded to the nearest 45 degrees, so stand where you want it to look before you place it.

How to put armor on an armor stand

  • Quick way: hold a piece of armor and use it on the stand. It goes into the right slot automatically.
  • Take it off: use the stand with an empty hand on the part of the body that holds the item.
  • Swap a full set: on Bedrock, sneak and use the stand to swap your whole armor set with the one on the stand. On Java, you have to move each piece by hand.

Armor stands can wear helmets, chestplates, leggings, boots, turtle shells, elytra, carved pumpkins and mob heads. Any blocks or items you put in the head slot with commands also display.

How to change an armor stand’s pose

Bedrock Edition

Sneak and use the armor stand with an empty hand to cycle through about a dozen poses. You can also power it with redstone: the strength of the signal sets the pose, which is useful for animated displays.

Java Edition

Survival players cannot change poses on Java. With cheats on, you can set poses with commands. For example, this summons a stand with arms, no base plate and a raised arm:

/summon armor_stand ~ ~ ~ {ShowArms:1b,NoBasePlate:1b,Pose:{RightArm:[-90f,0f,0f]}}

Online armor stand generators build these commands for you with a visual editor.

How to give an armor stand arms

  • Bedrock Edition: armor stands always have arms and can hold an item. Use an item on the stand to put it in its hand.
  • Java Edition: stands placed in survival have no arms. Summon one with ShowArms:1b as shown above, or edit an existing one with the /data command. A stand with arms can hold items in both hands.

Useful armor stand tricks

  • Small stands: on Java, Small:1b makes a child-sized stand, great for displaying a dog’s armor or small statues.
  • Invisible stands: Invisible:1b hides the stand and leaves only the items, perfect for floating displays.
  • Name tags: name an armor stand with a name tag to show a floating label.
  • Pistons: armor stands are entities, so pistons and water can push them.
  • Scarecrows and statues: put a carved pumpkin or a banner on the head slot to make a scarecrow for your farm.

How to break or pick up an armor stand

Hit it twice to break it. It drops as an item along with everything it was wearing. In Creative mode it breaks with one hit. Be careful near lava or cactus, because the dropped armor can be destroyed.

Armor stand ideas

  • An armory wall with one stand for every armor tier from leather to netherite.
  • A trophy room with stands wearing mob heads you have collected.
  • Guards outside a castle gate holding swords and shields (Bedrock, or Java with commands).
  • A changing room by your bed with a spare set for after a bad death.

Armor stands in Java vs Bedrock

The crafting recipe is identical, but the two editions treat armor stands very differently once they are placed. Bedrock armor stands have arms from the start, can hold an item in the main hand, swap a full armor set with one action and cycle through poses when you sneak and use them. Java armor stands placed in survival have no arms and keep the default pose. Java makes up for it with powerful commands: you can set every limb’s rotation, hide the base plate, make the stand small, invisible or immune to damage, and even give it a custom name. Map makers use these features to build statues, furniture and animated scenes that look nothing like an armor stand.

Common problems

  • The recipe will not work: check that the slab is smooth stone, not regular stone, cobblestone or sandstone.
  • The stand faces the wrong way: break it and place it again while looking in the direction you want it to face. It snaps to the nearest 45-degree angle.
  • Armor will not go on: make sure you are aiming at the stand itself and not the block behind it. On Java, use the item on the correct part of the body if the slot is already full.
  • The stand disappeared: armor stands can be destroyed by explosions, lava, fire and falling anvils. Keep valuable armor away from creeper-prone areas.
