Axolotls are one of the cutest and most useful mobs in Minecraft. These small amphibians live in lush caves, come in five colors, and fight alongside you underwater. Players often search for how to tame an axolotl, but axolotls work a little differently from wolves or cats: you cannot tame them in the usual way, but you can lead them, carry them in a bucket, breed them and keep them as pets. This guide explains what axolotls eat in Minecraft, how to breed them, how to get a rare blue axolotl, and how to use them as underwater allies in Java and Bedrock Edition.
What do axolotls eat in Minecraft?
Axolotls eat tropical fish, and you feed them with a bucket of tropical fish, not a raw fish item. To get one, find tropical fish in a warm ocean or lukewarm ocean, hold a water bucket and use it on a tropical fish to scoop it up. That gives you a bucket of tropical fish. Use it on an axolotl to feed it; the bucket turns back into a water bucket you can refill with another fish.

Where to find axolotls
Axolotls spawn in water inside lush caves, the green cave biome full of moss, azalea, glow berries and dripleaf. In Java Edition they spawn in darkness in water above clay blocks, so look for water pools with clay underneath. On the surface, a flowering azalea tree is a good clue: lush caves are usually directly below it. Bring torches, a pickaxe and a water bucket, and dig down carefully.
How to tame an axolotl in Minecraft
There is no taming animation with hearts and a collar like a wolf, so an axolotl never becomes officially tamed. Instead, you make one your pet in three ways:
- Catch it in a bucket. Use a water bucket on an axolotl to get a bucket of axolotl. Axolotls in buckets keep their color and never despawn once released, which is the closest thing to taming.
- Lead it with food. Axolotls follow players holding a bucket of tropical fish, which lets you guide them through water.
- Use a lead. You can attach a lead to an axolotl and pull it along, even on land for short trips. See how to make a lead.
Once you have one in a bucket, build it a home: an aquarium with a few blocks of water, some decoration and a roof so it stays in shade. Axolotls slowly dry out on land and take damage after about five minutes out of water unless it is raining, so always keep them in or next to water.
How to breed axolotls
- Get two adult axolotls next to each other in water.
- Use a bucket of tropical fish on each one. Hearts appear above them.
- A baby axolotl appears. Its color is usually one of its parents’ colors.
- The parents cannot breed again for 5 minutes.
Baby axolotls grow into adults in about 20 minutes. Feeding a baby a bucket of tropical fish speeds up the growth by 10 percent of the remaining time each time. Babies do not attack other mobs.
How to get a blue axolotl
The blue axolotl is the rarest mob variant in vanilla Minecraft. It never spawns naturally in survival; the only way to get one is through breeding. Each time two axolotls breed, there is a 1 in 1,200 chance (about 0.083 percent) that the baby is blue, regardless of the parents’ colors. Once you have one blue axolotl, two blue parents still only have the normal chance to pass the color on in most cases, so many players set up an automatic breeding station and keep feeding pairs. In Creative you can simply use a blue axolotl spawn egg or a command.
What axolotls do: your underwater allies
Axolotls are hostile to most aquatic mobs and will attack them on sight, including drowned, guardians, elder guardians, squid, glow squid and most fish. They do not attack dolphins, turtles or frogs. When you fight a mob that an axolotl is also attacking and you kill it, you receive Regeneration I and your Mining Fatigue is removed. That makes a few axolotls in buckets extremely useful when raiding an ocean monument, where elder guardians give Mining Fatigue.
Playing dead
When an axolotl is badly hurt in water, it sometimes plays dead: it rolls onto its back, enemies stop targeting it, and it regenerates health. This is a normal behavior, not a bug.
Axolotl colors
| Color | Game name | How to get |
|---|---|---|
| Pink | Leucistic (Lucy) | Natural spawn |
| Brown | Wild | Natural spawn |
| Gold | Gold | Natural spawn |
| Cyan | Cyan | Natural spawn |
| Blue | Blue | Breeding only, 1 in 1,200 |
Tips for keeping axolotls
- Carry axolotls in buckets; they stack only one per bucket, so bring several buckets.
- Name them with a name tag to make them easier to find in a big aquarium.
- Keep tropical fish in a separate tank, because axolotls will eat them.
- Do not put axolotls in the same tank as fish you want to keep.
- Release them near drowned when you need help at an ocean monument or underwater ruin.
Java vs Bedrock differences
Axolotls behave almost the same in both editions. Food, breeding, colors and the blue chance are identical. Spawning rules differ slightly: Java requires clay below the water in lush caves, while Bedrock spawns them in lush cave water more freely. In both editions they play dead and give Regeneration when helping you.
Axolotl FAQ
What do axolotls eat in Minecraft?
A bucket of tropical fish. Raw fish items do not work.
Can you tame an axolotl?
Not like a wolf or cat. Catch it in a water bucket to keep it as a pet; bucketed axolotls never despawn.
How do you breed axolotls?
Feed two adults a bucket of tropical fish each while they are in water.
How rare is a blue axolotl?
Each bred baby has a 1 in 1,200 chance to be blue.
Do axolotls die out of water?
Yes. They start drying out after about five minutes on land, unless it is raining.
Building an axolotl aquarium
A good axolotl tank is at least 3 blocks deep and 4 by 4 wide, built from glass so you can see in. Line the floor with sand or clay, add seagrass, kelp and coral for decoration, and place a few glowstone or sea lanterns under carpet if you want light without harming them. Axolotls dislike bright sunlight, so a roof or a cave location keeps them comfortable. Fill the tank with water source blocks rather than flowing water so they can swim freely, then release them from their buckets. Add a small airlock or a trapdoor lid so you can reach in to feed and breed them without letting them escape. If you breed often, build a separate nursery tank so babies do not get lost among adults, and keep a chest of water buckets and tropical fish buckets nearby.
If an axolotl disappears from your tank, it was probably never picked up in a bucket: naturally spawned axolotls can despawn when you move far away, while ones released from buckets stay forever.
