How much is Minecraft on PS5?
Minecraft on PlayStation is the Bedrock Edition and usually costs about $19.99 on the PlayStation Store. PS5 has a native version, and players who own the PS4 version can play on PS5 too. Online multiplayer on PlayStation needs a PlayStation Plus Essential subscription, but split-screen and single player do not. Bedrock on PS5 supports crossplay with Xbox, Switch, PC and mobile once you sign in with a free Microsoft account.
How much is Minecraft on Xbox?
Minecraft costs $19.99 on the Xbox store, and one purchase works on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It is also included with Xbox Game Pass on console, so subscribers can play without buying it. Online play needs Game Pass Essential or higher. Read more on our Minecraft hub.
How much is Minecraft on Nintendo Switch?
Minecraft on Nintendo Switch costs about $29.99, a little more than on Xbox and PlayStation. You can buy it digitally from the Nintendo eShop or as a physical cartridge, which is often discounted at retailers. The Switch version is Bedrock Edition and runs on Switch 2 as well, with crossplay to every other Bedrock device. Online play needs Nintendo Switch Online.
Can you play Minecraft on Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Minecraft is fully available on Switch and Switch 2, including Survival, Creative, Realms, featured servers and split-screen. Older special versions such as Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition were replaced by the current Bedrock version, which gets the same updates as other platforms.
How much is Minecraft on PS4?
On PS4, Minecraft is the same Bedrock Edition sold for about $19.99. If you buy it on PS4, you can also play it on PS5. The old PS4 Edition of Minecraft (Legacy Console Edition) is no longer updated; make sure you download the current version simply called Minecraft.
Can you play Minecraft on Mac?
Yes. Mac players buy Minecraft: Java and Bedrock Edition for PC for $29.99 and play the Java Edition through the Minecraft Launcher on macOS. Bedrock Edition does not run on Mac, so Mac players can play with Java players on Windows and Linux, but not with console or mobile players unless a server uses GeyserMC. Java runs well on Apple silicon Macs, and you can add mods and shaders. See how to install Minecraft mods.
Can you play Minecraft on Chromebook?
Yes. Minecraft Bedrock Edition is available for Chromebooks through Google Play on supported models. Check the minimum requirements on the store page, because older or low-memory Chromebooks may not run it smoothly. Many schools use Minecraft Education instead, which is a separate product.
Which edition should you buy?
- Most friends on consoles or phones: buy Bedrock on your platform for crossplay.
- You want mods, shaders and big community servers: buy the PC bundle and play Java.
- On a Mac: the PC bundle is the only option, and you play Java.
- Kids sharing a family console: one copy on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch supports split-screen for up to four players.
For crossplay details, see is Minecraft cross-platform.
Is Minecraft free anywhere?
The full game is not free, but there are legitimate ways to play without buying it outright:
- Xbox Game Pass: includes Minecraft on Xbox, and PC Game Pass includes the Java and Bedrock bundle on Windows.
- Free trials: Minecraft offers trial versions on some platforms with limited playtime.
- Minecraft Classic: a free browser version of the 2009 creative mode, with only 32 blocks.
- Minecraft Education: often free for students through their school.
Avoid websites offering free Minecraft downloads or account generators. They are usually malware or account scams, and Microsoft can ban stolen accounts.
Do you have to buy Minecraft again on a new console?
It depends. Upgrading within the same family is usually free: Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, PS4 to PS5, and Switch to Switch 2 keep your purchase. Moving between different brands, such as from PlayStation to Xbox, means buying the game again. Marketplace items bought with Minecoins follow your Microsoft account across most Bedrock platforms, so sign in with the same account everywhere.
Extra costs to know
- Online subscriptions on consoles: PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online or Game Pass.
- Realms: a monthly subscription for a private always-online world; see Minecraft Realms prices.
- Marketplace: optional skins, worlds and add-ons bought with Minecoins.

Price comparison: what you get for the money
The PC bundle is the best value if you play on a computer, because one $29.99 purchase gives you two complete games: Java Edition for mods and huge servers, and Bedrock Edition for crossplay with consoles and phones. Console prices are lower, at around $19.99 on Xbox and PlayStation, but you also pay for an online subscription if you want to play with friends over the internet. Mobile is the cheapest way in, at under $8, and runs the same Bedrock Edition with the same updates, crossplay and Realms support, so a phone copy is a smart second copy for travel.
When Minecraft goes on sale
Minecraft discounts are fairly common. The PC bundle has dropped to about $22.49 during Microsoft Store sales, and console versions often fall by 25 to 50 percent during Black Friday, holiday and spring sales. Physical Switch cartridges and gift cards are often discounted at big retailers. If you are not in a hurry, adding Minecraft to your wishlist on the Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo store is an easy way to get notified when it drops.
Buying Minecraft as a gift
For PC, buy a Minecraft Java and Bedrock gift card or a digital code from minecraft.net, which the person redeems on their Microsoft account. For consoles, buy a store gift card for their platform or a physical copy. Make sure you know which device they use, because a PlayStation code will not work on an Xbox, and a mobile purchase stays on that app store.
