Mission overview

  • Mission: 1 of 16, Mayhem.
  • Location: Hajin City, South Korea.
  • You play as: Pvt. Park Hyun-Jun.
  • Squad: Lt. West, Sgt. Jae, Cpl. Dunn, Pvt. Cho, Pvt. Moon and Pvt. Ju Kwon.
  • Reward: finishing the mission unlocks Cho as an Operator.
  • Co-op: none. The campaign is single-player only.
  • Next mission: Out in the Cold.

Step 1: The transport and the street

The mission opens in a military transport where the squad jokes about music until Lt. West tells everyone to focus. The vehicle drops you on a busy night street in Hajin City. You walk with the squad past restaurants, food stalls and crowds. There are no enemies yet, only conversation and name tags that introduce the squad.

Step 2: Help Dunn at Goh Mart

The squad enters a 24-hour convenience store called Goh Mart, and the Mayhem title card appears. Your first objective is Help Dunn, which means answering two dialogue prompts while he shops. One involves buying stomach medicine for Ju Kwon. Park pays by scanning a QR code, and a TV in the store shows news about North Korea new leader. Take your time here, because this is the calm before the attack.

Step 3: The blackout and the evacuation

Power fails across the district, artillery sounds in the distance and a blast hits the market. Ju Kwon is fatally wounded, and the squad takes his dog tags before leaving him. Follow your squad and sprint through fire, rubble, downed power lines and fleeing civilians toward the stadium. From this point on checkpoints are frequent.

Step 4: Find shelter in the stadium

The objective is Find Shelter in the Stadium. The squad enters the Netshin Wolves baseball stadium through gate A01 just before a metal shutter closes. West leads you through dark service corridors toward Charlie Platoon. Follow West to the baseball field.

Step 5: Defend the baseball field

North Korean paratroopers land while transports fly overhead. Take cover behind the supply crates and fight them off. You start with two spare armor plates. The paratrooper supply drops make good cover, so use them. This is also where you can earn the Skeet Shooting trophy, described below.

Step 6: Regroup in the restaurant

After a cease-fire call, the squad crosses the outfield, climbs the stands and reaches a damaged restaurant and kitchen held by Charlie Platoon and wounded soldiers. Enemy infantry break into the dining room and you fight at close range. Armor plates and ammunition are available here, so refill before you go on. Dunn then spots armored vehicles outside and the objective changes to investigate where the vehicle came from.

Step 7: Split up and enter the garage

West stays with Moon and the wounded. Jae, Dunn, Cho and Park go outside to find the source of the armor. You take cover from a passing convoy and then enter an underground parking garage. This section is stealth-based, and being spotted ends the attempt. Crouch for the first patrol, go prone for the convoy, and stay between parked cars in the garage.

Step 8: Breach and defend the fuel tanker

In the basement you find an excavated tunnel guarded by North Korean soldiers. Clear the guards, then defend the disabled fuel tanker as the squad pushes it toward the tunnel. Throw grenades at the tunnel enemies, since players recommend at least three. After pushing the truck, use a hole in the wall to reach two enemies on the right.

Step 9: Fire the RPG-8

Once the truck crashes into the tunnel, Dunn calls for a launcher. Pick up the RPG-8 near the crates on the left and fire it at the tanker. The explosion collapses the tunnel and cuts off the enemy route into the city. A cutscene follows with the Infinity Ward logo, news reports of a North Korean invasion and a manhunt for Captain John Price. The tunnel shot comes roughly fifteen minutes into the mission.

The Skeet Shooting trophy

The trophy list datamined for the PlayStation version includes Skeet Shooting, a Silver trophy for killing 10 paratroopers before they land. It is not confirmed by Activision. Players suggest doing it on the stadium field, starting on the right side and working right to left to maximize time. Stay behind the fence and shoot the paratroopers as they come down. A reported trick is to play on Recruit, set the field of view to minimum and avoid advancing into the stadium, which triggers a checkpoint save.

Difficulty settings

Modern Warfare 4 has six difficulties: Recruit, Regular, Hardened, Veteran, Realism and YOLO. Realism unlocks after you finish the campaign, and YOLO unlocks after you finish on Realism. Veteran makes the later firefights noticeably harsher. For a first run, Regular or Hardened is a good balance.

Who is who in the squad

Mayhem introduces the squad you will follow for much of the campaign. Park is the player character, a young South Korean Marine facing live combat for the first time. Lt. West leads the group and keeps it moving toward Charlie Platoon. Sgt. Jae and Cpl. Dunn are the experienced voices on the ground, with Dunn the one who calls for the launcher at the end. Pvt. Cho is the squad member you unlock as an Operator, and Pvt. Moon stays behind with the wounded. Pvt. Ju Kwon is the character you lose early, which sets the tone for the invasion. Learning these names now helps later, because Park returns in missions such as Losing Ground, Defection and Counter Attack, which is set in Hajin City as well.

How Mayhem fits into the 16-mission campaign

The Modern Warfare 4 campaign has 16 missions, running from Mayhem to Greater Good, and it alternates between Park and John Price. The opening stretch looks like this:

  1. Mayhem: you play Pvt. Park Hyun-Jun. Reward: Cho operator.
  2. Out in the Cold: you play John Price. Reward: the No More Rules calling card.
  3. Following Orders: you play an unnamed comrade.
  4. Hired Gun: you play John Price. Reward: Dallas operator.
  5. Losing Ground: you play Park again, with a ROK Marine squad moving from a cafe hardpoint to a mortar truck and a collapsing bridge.

Out in the Cold has two achievements tied to difficulty: Safety’s On for Hardened or harder and Can’t Touch This for Veteran or harder. Hired Gun has the Bullet Train achievement. Mayhem has the Skeet Shooting trophy covered above, and Following Orders has two achievements of its own, No Stone Unturned and No Harm Done.

What Mayhem sets up

The ending sets the stakes for the rest of the story. The tunnel collapse stops the immediate push into Hajin City, but news reports of a North Korean invasion and a manhunt for Captain John Price show that the larger conflict has only started. After the cutscene the next mission, Out in the Cold, switches you to John Price. The first mission is also a good time to adjust your settings: check your field of view, sensitivity and subtitles so that the tense fights that follow feel comfortable.

Platforms and availability

Modern Warfare 4 is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and Battle.net. The campaign went into early access in October 2026 ahead of multiplayer, and the full game and the DMZ map Hajin launched on October 23. Clearing individual campaign missions awards rewards such as operator skins, calling cards and emblems that can be used in multiplayer modes, and the campaign is single-player only, so there is no co-op to set up.

Why the first mission matters for the rest of the campaign

Mayhem is the template for the quieter-then-louder pacing that the campaign uses. It introduces the squad through conversation, then makes you feel the loss of a squad member, then drops you into a defensive fight before ending on a stealth section and a large explosion. If you pay attention to the controls here, such as armor plates, cover and grenade timing, you will have a much easier time in the harder missions that follow.

Tips for a clean run

  • Use the paratrooper supply packages as cover on the baseball field.
  • Refill ammunition and armor at the restaurant cache.
  • If you leave the mission area, the game sends you back to the last checkpoint.
  • In the finale, cover your squad while they push the fuel truck, then take the RPG from the left.
  • Do not rush the early dialogue, because the setup explains the conflict.
