Nether portal coordinates: how the 8:1 rule works

One block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld. Here is how to line up two portals.

Distances in the Nether are eight times shorter than in the Overworld. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether X and Z. Height (Y) does not change in the calculation.

Overworld X, Z Nether X, Z
800, 400 100, 50
-1600, 240 -200, 30
80, 80 10, 10

Try your own numbers in the Nether portal calculator. To go the other way, multiply by 8.

Linking two portals

Build the Nether portal at the converted coordinates and the game should link to the one you built. If the portals sit too close together, they may link differently, so keep them well apart.
