PlayStation 5 Pro vs PS5: Specs, Price and Is the Pro Worth It? (2026)

PlayStation 5 Pro vs PS5 compared: GPU, PSSR upscaling, ray tracing, storage, 2026 prices and who should upgrade.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated October 28, 2026

The PlayStation 5 Pro vs PS5 question comes down to one thing: how much you care about image quality on a 4K TV. The PS5 Pro has a much stronger graphics chip, Sony’s PSSR upscaling, better ray tracing and twice the storage, but it costs a lot more and plays exactly the same games. This comparison covers specs, real-world differences, price and who should buy which.

PlayStation 5 Pro vs PS5: quick verdict

  • Buy the PS5 if you play on a 1080p or 1440p screen, mostly play online shooters, or want the best value.
  • Buy the PS5 Pro if you have a good 4K TV, want sharper 60fps modes in big single-player games, and do not mind paying more.
  • Keep your PS5 if you already own one; the upgrade is a luxury, not a necessity.

What the PS5 Pro actually changes in games

Most PS5 games offer two modes: a Fidelity mode that looks sharp but runs at 30fps, and a Performance mode that runs at 60fps but looks softer. The PS5 Pro’s main job is to remove that trade-off. In games with a PS5 Pro Enhanced patch, the Performance mode looks close to the old Fidelity mode while staying at 60fps. Ray-traced reflections and lighting also run better, and some games add extra effects only on the Pro.

Games without a Pro patch still benefit a little: the Pro can boost resolution or stabilize frame rates in some titles automatically through its Game Boost feature. But if a game already runs well on PS5, you may not see much difference.

Where the difference is easy to see

  • Big open-world games with ray tracing, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ghost of Yotei.
  • Racing games such as Gran Turismo 7, which add ray tracing during races on the Pro.
  • Games on large 4K TVs, where softer images are most obvious.

Where the difference is small

  • Competitive shooters, which already target 60 or 120fps with modest graphics.
  • Indie and 2D games.
  • Playing on a 1080p TV or monitor.

Price: PS5 vs PS5 Pro in 2026

The PS5 Pro launched at $699.99. Sony’s official US price rose to $899.99 on April 2, 2026, while many US retailers have been selling it nearer $749.99 since late August. The disc PS5 has an official price of $649.99 and a common retail price of $549.99. Either way, the gap is $200 to $300, and more if you add the $79.99 disc drive to the Pro. Storage, discs and accessories

The PS5 Pro’s 2TB SSD is a genuine advantage: it holds roughly twice as many games before you need an upgrade. Both consoles take the same M.2 NVMe expansion drives. The Pro has no disc drive, so if you own physical games, budget for the detachable drive. Both use the same DualSense controller, the same PlayStation Portal for remote play and the same PS VR2 headset.

Do you need a special TV for the PS5 Pro?

To see the benefit you want a 4K TV, ideally with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz. The Pro also supports 8K output in a few games, but 8K TVs are rare and the gain is minor. On a 1080p screen, the Pro supersamples the image so it looks a little cleaner, but the difference is not worth the price. See the best TVs for PS5.

Should you upgrade from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro?

Only if you play many big single-player games on a 4K TV and the price does not matter much to you. Trading in or selling your PS5 can cover part of the cost. Transferring is easy: use the data transfer option during setup to copy games and saves over Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. If you are on the fence, remember that the PlayStation 6 is not announced yet, so a Pro bought now should stay relevant for several years.

PS5 Pro vs PS5 FAQ

Is the PS5 Pro worth it over the PS5?

On a 4K TV in big single-player games, yes. On a 1080p screen or for online shooters, usually not.

Does every game run better on PS5 Pro?

Games with a PS5 Pro Enhanced patch improve the most. Others may see small gains from Game Boost or none at all.

Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?

No. You can add the detachable PS5 disc drive for about $79.99.

Do PS5 games and saves work on the PS5 Pro?

Yes, all PS5 and PS4 games, saves and accessories carry over.

Is the PS5 Pro the PS6?

No. It is a mid-generation upgrade of the PS5.

Understanding PSSR

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler and the PS5 Pro’s most important feature. The console renders a game at a lower resolution, then PSSR reconstructs a sharper 4K image using a trained neural network, similar in idea to Nvidia’s DLSS on PC. This is how the Pro can run 60fps modes that look almost as sharp as the 30fps modes on a standard PS5. PSSR works best in games that were updated for it; early implementations sometimes showed shimmering on fine details, and Sony and developers have improved it through updates since launch.

Noise, heat and size

The PS5 Pro is slightly wider than the slim PS5 but shorter than the original 2020 model. It runs quiet in normal use, though it can draw more power and give off more heat in demanding games, so leave space around the vents. The vertical stand is sold separately, just as with the slim PS5. If you are switching from the original large PS5, both the slim and the Pro will feel compact by comparison.

Online, PlayStation Plus and features

There is no difference in online services. Both consoles use the same PlayStation Network account, the same PlayStation Plus tiers, the same Remote Play support and the same system software features. Game saves sync through cloud storage for PS Plus members, so moving between the two is seamless. Some multiplayer games let PS5 Pro players use higher-quality settings, but matchmaking and crossplay are identical, so neither console gives a competitive advantage beyond frame rate stability.

Value over the long term

Think about how long you plan to keep the console. If you buy one console for the rest of this generation and the start of the next, the Pro’s extra power and storage help it age better, especially as new games become more demanding. If you might switch to a PlayStation 6 as soon as it launches, the standard PS5 is the smarter spend, and the money you save can go toward games or a better TV.

Which PS5 Pro games look best?

Sony’s first-party games show off the Pro most clearly: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and Ghost of Yotei all have Pro modes. Third-party highlights include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2 and Call of Duty, which use the extra power for higher resolution or better ray tracing. Look for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label on the store page before you buy a game.
