Sheep are the source of wool in Minecraft, which you need for beds, carpets, banners and colorful builds. They are easy to farm because they regrow their wool by eating grass. Breeding them is simple too, and with dyes you can grow a flock in every color. This guide explains what sheep eat in Minecraft, how to breed sheep, how to shear and dye them, how lamb colors work, and how to set up a wool farm.
Quick answer: what do sheep eat?
- Grass blocks: sheep eat grass from the ground, turning it into dirt. This is how a sheared sheep regrows its wool.
- Wheat: you feed wheat to sheep to breed them, to lure them and to make lambs grow faster.
Sheep do not take carrots, seeds or hay bales. They also nibble short grass plants, but grass blocks are what matter for regrowing wool.
How to breed sheep in Minecraft
- Collect wheat from a farm or a village.
- Find two adult sheep, or lure them into a pen by holding wheat.
- Feed each sheep one wheat. Hearts appear above them.
- A lamb appears between them.
The parents can breed again after about 5 minutes. Lambs grow into adults in about 20 minutes, and eating grass or being fed wheat speeds this up. Since the Tiny Takeover drop in 2026, lambs have their own baby look and sounds, and a Golden Dandelion can keep one as a lamb forever.
How to shear a sheep
Use shears on an adult sheep to get 1 to 3 wool without hurting it. The sheep stays bald until it eats a grass block, then the wool grows back. Shears are 2 iron ingots placed diagonally. See how to make shears.
Killing a sheep drops only 1 wool and some raw mutton, so shearing is far better for wool. Dispensers holding shears can shear sheep automatically when powered.
Sheep colors
| Natural color | How common |
|---|---|
| White | Most common, about 82 percent |
| Black, gray, light gray | About 5 percent each |
| Brown | About 3 percent |
| Pink | Very rare, about 0.16 percent |
How to dye a sheep
Use any dye on a sheep to change its color permanently. It keeps regrowing that color of wool every time you shear it, so one dye gives you endless colored wool. See the dye guide, plus white dye and black dye.
Lamb colors
A lamb takes the color of one of its parents. If the parents’ colors can be mixed into a new dye, the lamb may get the mixed color instead. For example, a red sheep and a yellow sheep can have an orange lamb, and a blue sheep and a white sheep can have a light blue lamb. This lets you breed new colors without using more dye.
Rainbow sheep
Name a sheep jeb_ with a name tag and it cycles through every color. When sheared, it drops the wool color it actually has underneath. See how to make a name tag.
What sheep drop
- Wool: 1 to 3 when sheared, 1 when killed.
- Raw mutton: 1 to 2 when killed, more with Looting. Cook it into cooked mutton.
- Experience: when killed or bred.
How to build a wool farm
Simple sheep pen
Fence a grassy area, bring in one sheep of each color you want, and breed a few of each. Shear them whenever their wool grows back. Keep the floor grass, not dirt, so they can eat and regrow wool. A 10 by 10 pen of grass is enough for about a dozen sheep.
Automatic wool farm
Put each sheep on a single grass block in a small cell, with a dispenser holding shears and an observer watching the grass block. When the sheep eats the grass, the grass turns to dirt, the observer fires, and the dispenser shears the regrown wool. A hopper or water stream collects the wool. This produces stacks of colored wool without any work.
Where to find sheep
Sheep spawn in most grassy biomes, including plains, forests, meadows, taigas and windswept hills, in groups of two to four. They do not spawn in deserts, jungles or the Nether. Lure them home with wheat, or use a lead.
Sheep in Java vs Bedrock
Sheep eat grass, breed with wheat and drop wool the same way in both editions. Lamb color mixing and jeb_ sheep work in both. Dispenser shearing also behaves the same.
How much wool do you need?
Wool goes fast once you start building. A bed needs 3 wool, a banner 6, and 2 wool make 3 carpets. Colorful builds, pixel art and statues can use hundreds of blocks of a single color. That is why most builders keep a small pen of dyed sheep, one or two of each color they use often. With a few sheep per color and shears, you can collect a stack of wool in a few minutes, and the sheep regrow it while you build. For really large projects, an automatic wool farm with dispensers and observers is worth the iron it costs, because it runs every time you are nearby and fills chests with wool while you do something else.
Common problems
- Sheep will not regrow wool: the pen floor is dirt. Replace it with grass blocks, or let grass spread from nearby.
- Sheep will not breed: both must be adults, and each needs a wheat while they are close together.
- My dyed sheep turned white: it is a lamb from two parents and took the other parent’s color. Dye it again.
- Wolves keep killing my sheep: fence the pen and keep wild wolves away. Tamed wolves only attack sheep if you hit a sheep near them.
