Channeling is one of the most fun enchantments in Minecraft. It lets you call down lightning with your trident, which looks great and also unlocks things that otherwise only happen during a lucky storm, like charged creepers and mob heads. It is also one of the most situational enchantments, because it only works in thunderstorms. This guide explains what Channeling does in Minecraft, exactly when it triggers, how to get it and how to use it.
Quick answer
When you throw a trident with Channeling and it hits a mob during a thunderstorm, a lightning bolt strikes that mob, as long as it is exposed to the sky. Channeling has one level, works only on tridents, and is incompatible with Riptide.
How Channeling works
- Weather: there must be a thunderstorm, not just rain.
- Sky: the target must have no blocks above it. Mobs under trees or roofs are not struck.
- Thrown trident: it triggers when a thrown trident hits. Melee hits do not trigger it.
- Lightning rods: in Java Edition, a thrown Channeling trident that hits a lightning rod during a thunderstorm also calls lightning onto the rod.
The lightning itself does damage and can set fire to the area, so be careful near wooden builds and animals you want to keep.
Why use Channeling?
Lightning transforms several mobs. With Channeling you can trigger these on purpose:
- Creeper to charged creeper. A charged creeper explosion that kills a zombie, skeleton, wither skeleton, piglin or another creeper makes it drop its head.
- Villager to witch.
- Pig to zombified piglin.
- Mooshroom colour swap between red and brown.
- Copper blocks lose their oxidation when struck. See copper uses.
It is also just a strong attack. Lightning plus the trident’s damage hurts most mobs a lot, and a Loyalty trident comes back to you, so you can throw it again and again during a storm.
How to get Channeling
From an enchanting table
Tridents can be enchanted at an enchanting table, and Channeling can appear there. See how to enchant in Minecraft.
From an enchanted book
Get a Channeling book from fishing, loot chests or a librarian villager, then apply it with an anvil.
Getting a trident
You cannot craft a trident. Drowned that spawn holding one can drop it when killed. Look for drowned in rivers and oceans. Drowned with tridents are rare, so it may take a while. Then repair it with Mending or an anvil.
Compatible enchantments
| Enchantment | With Channeling? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loyalty | Yes | Trident flies back to you. The best pair. |
| Riptide | No | Launches you instead of the trident. |
| Impaling | Yes | Extra damage to aquatic mobs; in Bedrock, to mobs in water or rain too. |
| Unbreaking | Yes | More durability. |
| Mending | Yes | Repairs with experience. |
A typical best Channeling trident is Loyalty III, Channeling, Impaling V, Unbreaking III and Mending. Many players carry a second trident with Riptide for travel.
Channeling vs Riptide vs Loyalty
| Enchantment | Best for |
|---|---|
| Channeling | Lightning, mob transformations, charged creepers |
| Riptide | Fast travel in water or rain |
| Loyalty | Getting the trident back after a throw |
Channeling and Loyalty work together, which is why a combat trident usually has both. A travel trident uses Riptide, because Riptide is incompatible with both of them.
How to get thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are random and short. In a world with cheats, use /weather thunder to start one; see how to enable cheats. In survival, keep the trident in your inventory and make use of storms as they come. Hostile mobs can spawn during a thunderstorm even in the daytime because the sky is so dark, so watch your back.
Step by step: making a charged creeper
- Wait for a thunderstorm, or use
/weather thunderin a world with cheats. - Find a creeper in an open area with nothing above it.
- Throw your Channeling trident at it. The lightning turns it into a charged creeper with a blue glowing aura.
- Lead it near the mob whose head you want, keeping your distance.
- Let it explode. If the explosion kills the target, the head drops.
Charged creepers are very dangerous; their explosion is much bigger than a normal creeper’s. Wear Blast Protection and stay back.
Channeling and lightning rods
Lightning rods are made from 3 copper ingots in a vertical line. During a storm, they attract natural lightning that would strike nearby, which protects wooden builds from fire. A struck rod also gives off a short redstone signal, so in Java Edition you can combine a Channeling trident and a rod for lightning-powered contraptions.
Tips
- Lead a creeper into an open area away from your house before throwing.
- To farm heads, get the charged creeper next to the target mob, then let it explode.
- Do not throw at villagers near your trading hall; you will turn them into witches.
- Avoid wooden houses and forests: lightning starts fires.
- With Loyalty, the trident returns to you; without it, pick it up where it landed.
Common Channeling problems
- Nothing happened: it was only raining, or the mob was under a block.
- Lightning hit but there is no charged creeper: the creeper may have died from the trident and lightning damage together. Try a trident without Impaling.
- The trident did not come back: it has no Loyalty, so pick it up where it landed.
Is Channeling worth it?
If you want mob heads, witches for a farm, or just a dramatic weapon, yes. If you mainly use a trident for travel in rain or water, Riptide is more useful, and you cannot have both on the same trident.
Channeling in multiplayer
On servers, Channeling can strike other players too when they are hit by your thrown trident during a thunderstorm and are under open sky. Lightning also sets fires, so on survival servers be careful near other players’ wooden builds and farms. Many servers protect claimed land, but fire can still spread in unclaimed areas. Use it in open fields, deserts or the ocean, where fires and damage are easy to control.
