Microsoft now sells several different Xbox models, from the cheap all-digital Series S to the limited 25th anniversary Series X, plus Windows handhelds with Xbox branding. Prices also rose on August 1, 2026, so older price guides are out of date. This guide lists every current Xbox model with its price, explains the differences, and covers where to buy, including Costco, Target and the used and refurbished market.

The different Xbox models explained

Xbox Series S

The smallest and cheapest Xbox. It plays all the same games as the Series X, but targets 1080p to 1440p instead of 4K and has no disc drive. It comes in white (512GB) and Carbon Black (1TB). Ideal for Game Pass players, kids’ rooms and 1080p TVs. See the Xbox Series S hub.

Xbox Series X

The most powerful Xbox, built for 4K at up to 120fps. The standard model is black with a 4K Blu-ray drive. The white Xbox Series X Digital, launched in 2024, removes the drive. See the Xbox Series X hub.

Special editions

Microsoft has released several limited Xbox consoles. The Xbox Halo Edition (Halo Infinite Limited Edition Series X, 2021) had a transparent, glowing design and matching controller and now sells used. The 2TB Galaxy Black Series X is being sunset as stock runs out. The newest is the translucent green Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition.

Handhelds with Xbox branding

The ROG Xbox Ally family are Windows handheld PCs made by Asus with an Xbox interface. They play Xbox PC games, Game Pass and Steam, but they are not Xbox consoles. See the ROG Xbox Ally hub.

White Xbox options

If you want a white Xbox, choose the Series S 512GB or the Series X Digital Edition. Both match the white Xbox Wireless Controller.

Which Xbox should you buy?

  • Best value: Xbox Series S 1TB, if you play digitally on a 1080p or 1440p screen.
  • Best overall: Xbox Series X with disc drive, for 4K TVs and physical games.
  • For collectors: the X25 Limited Edition.
  • For PC gamers who want portability: the ROG Xbox Ally.

Where to buy an Xbox

Costco Xbox deals

Costco sells Xbox Series X and Series S bundles to members, usually with an extra controller or a game included rather than a lower price. The big advantage at Costco is its generous return policy and extended warranty on electronics through Costco’s concierge service. If you search for a Costco Xbox Series X, check the bundle contents carefully and compare the total value with buying separately.

Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon

Xbox at Target is often worth checking during Target Circle Week and Black Friday, when gift cards or discounts come with consoles. Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon also stock every model, and Best Buy often has open-box consoles at a discount. The Microsoft Store sells every model at the official price and lets you add Game Pass or accessories easily.

Used and refurbished Xbox: is it worth it?

A used Xbox can save you a lot, especially now that new prices are high. Typical used prices in late 2026 are about $250 to $350 for a Series S and $400 to $550 for a Series X, depending on condition and storage. A refurbished Xbox from Microsoft or a major retailer costs a little more than used but includes a warranty and a full test.

Tips for buying a used Xbox

  • Ask the seller to factory reset the console and remove their account in front of you, or check it is reset when it arrives.
  • Test the disc drive on a Series X, all USB ports, the HDMI port and the controller.
  • Listen for loud fan noise, which can mean dust build-up or overheating.
  • Check the serial number on the back matches the box, and ask for a receipt if possible.
  • Avoid deals that seem too good to be true, especially on limited editions such as the Halo Edition.

Older Xbox consoles

You can still buy an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox second-hand. They are much cheaper, but fewer new games support them. See the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox hubs for model guides and prices.

What else you need to budget for

The console price is only the start. Plan for these extra costs when you work out how much an Xbox really costs:

  • Game Pass: from $9.99 a month for Essential, which you need for online multiplayer in paid games, up to $22.99 for Ultimate. See the Xbox Game Pass hub.
  • A second controller: about $64.99 or more if you play with family or friends on the couch.
  • Rechargeable batteries: Xbox controllers use AA batteries by default, so a rechargeable kit saves money over time.
  • Storage: on the 512GB Series S especially, an expansion card or external drive is likely. See Xbox storage expansion.
  • A headset: for voice chat in online games.

A realistic first-year budget for a Series S with Game Pass Essential and a second controller is around $700. For a Series X with Game Pass Ultimate and storage, expect well over $1,100.

When is the best time to buy an Xbox?

Black Friday in late November is usually the best time, with bundles that include a game or gift card. The Xbox anniversary in mid-November and the spring sale can also bring offers. Avoid paying above the official price from third-party sellers when stock is tight; supply usually catches up within a few weeks. If you are thinking of waiting for the next generation, remember that Project Helix is not expected before 2028 and is likely to cost much more.

Buying an Xbox as a gift

If you are buying for someone else, the Series S is the safest gift: it is cheaper, plays every current game and works with any TV. Add a Game Pass gift card so they can start playing right away, and set up Xbox Family Settings on your phone before they open it if the gift is for a child. Keep the receipt in case they already own one.

Bundles: are they worth it?

Bundles are worth it when the included game is one you would buy anyway, or when the bundle price equals the console alone. Bundles that add an older game at full price are less valuable than they look, so check the game’s current sale price before you decide.
