Can you play VR on Xbox? And what happened to Kinect? Both questions come up constantly, because Microsoft has experimented with motion and mixed reality for years without ever releasing a VR headset for its consoles. This guide explains the state of Xbox VR in 2026, the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, the history of Xbox Kinect, the best Kinect games, and whether Kinect still works today.
Is there an Xbox VR headset?
No. Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One do not support virtual reality headsets, and Microsoft has never released one for its consoles. In 2016 Microsoft promised that the then-upcoming Project Scorpio (the Xbox One X) would support high-fidelity VR, but the plan was dropped before launch, and Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality headsets remained a PC-only product until they were discontinued. Today, Xbox VR means one of two things: playing Xbox Cloud Gaming on a giant virtual screen inside a Meta Quest headset, or playing PC VR games from the Xbox app on a Windows PC with a compatible headset.
Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition
In June 2025 Meta and Microsoft released the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, a limited black and green version of the Quest 3S. It came bundled with an Xbox Wireless Controller in matching colors, a three-month Game Pass Ultimate membership, three months of Meta Horizon+, and an Elite Strap. It is a standalone VR headset that plays Quest games natively, and it can stream hundreds of Xbox Cloud Gaming titles on a huge virtual screen. It does not turn Xbox games into VR games: you are watching a flat game in a virtual theater. If you want true console VR, the only option is Sony’s PlayStation VR2 on PS5; see our PS VR2 guide.
How to play Xbox games in a VR headset
- On a Meta Quest 3, 3S or Quest Pro, open the Xbox app from the Meta Horizon Store.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account that has Game Pass with cloud play.
- Pair an Xbox controller to the headset via Bluetooth.
- Choose a cloud game and play on a virtual screen in a room or theater environment.
You can also use the Quest’s Remote Play support for Xbox through the Xbox app to stream from your own console. Quality depends on your Wi-Fi; a Wi-Fi 6 router close to the headset helps. More in our Xbox Cloud Gaming guide.
What was Xbox Kinect?
Kinect was a motion-sensing camera that let you control games and menus with your body and voice, no controller needed. The Xbox 360 Kinect launched on November 4, 2010 and sold 8 million units in its first 60 days, setting a Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling consumer electronics device. Microsoft bundled an upgraded Kinect 2.0 with every Xbox One at launch in 2013, which raised the console’s price to $499. After poor sales and complaints, Microsoft began selling the Xbox One without Kinect in 2014, and it stopped making Kinect in October 2017.
Best Xbox Kinect games
- Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports Season Two: bowling, boxing, football and more.
- Dance Central 1-3: the best dance games ever made, by the creators of Rock Band.
- Kinect Adventures!: the pack-in game with river rafting and obstacle courses.
- Fruit Ninja Kinect: slicing fruit with your arms.
- Child of Eden: a trippy rail shooter you play with your hands.
- Just Dance series: supported Kinect for years on both 360 and Xbox One.
- Kinect Star Wars: remembered mostly for its dance-off mode.
- Fantasia: Music Evolved and Kinect Party on Xbox One.
Does Kinect work on Xbox One and Series X?
The Xbox One Kinect works on the original Xbox One directly. The Xbox One S and Xbox One X have no Kinect port, so they need the official Kinect Adapter, which Microsoft discontinued in 2018 and now sells used for high prices. Xbox Series X|S does not support Kinect at all, even with the adapter. The Xbox 360 Kinect works only on the Xbox 360. Kinect games are not backward compatible on newer consoles, so if you want to play them, you need the original hardware.
Kinect on PC and beyond
Kinect lived on as a developer tool. The Xbox One Kinect works on Windows with the adapter and was popular for 3D scanning, motion capture and VR body tracking projects. Microsoft later released the Azure Kinect developer kit for businesses, which it also discontinued in 2023, licensing the technology to partners. The depth-sensing work behind Kinect also fed into HoloLens.
Will Xbox ever get VR?
Microsoft has said repeatedly that it is not building console VR, preferring to bring Xbox games to existing headsets through the cloud. The Quest partnership is the clearest sign of that strategy. Reports about the next Xbox, Project Helix, focus on PC-like features rather than VR. If you want to play VR now, PS VR2 on PS5 and standalone Quest headsets are the realistic choices.
FAQ
Can I use a PC VR headset with my Xbox?
No. Xbox consoles do not output to VR headsets.
Is Kinect worth buying in 2026?
Only for nostalgia or parties on an Xbox 360 or original Xbox One. Dance Central and Kinect Sports are still fun, but the hardware is discontinued.
What is the cheapest way to get Xbox games in VR?
A Meta Quest 3S with a Game Pass tier that includes cloud play, playing on a virtual screen.
Kinect alternatives for motion gaming today
If you miss Kinect-style games, there are modern options. Just Dance on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch uses your phone as a motion controller through the Just Dance Controller app. The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers support motion games such as Switch Sports. On VR, Beat Saber, Supernatural and Les Mills XR Dance on Quest give you full-body workouts that go far beyond what Kinect could track. And on PS5, PS VR2 games such as Synth Riders and Pistol Whip combine music and motion. For family parties on Xbox, the best substitute is a set of couch co-op games with standard controllers, from Overcooked to It Takes Two; see our list of the best 2-player Xbox games.
Selling or recycling an old Kinect
Kinect sensors still sell secondhand to collectors and hobbyists who use them for PC projects. Include the original power adapter or Kinect Adapter for Windows if you have it, because those parts are now hard to find. If the sensor is broken, recycle it through an electronics recycling program instead of the trash.
The history of VR plans at Xbox
Microsoft has teased VR several times. At E3 2016 it said the Xbox One X, then called Project Scorpio, would support high-end VR, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets launched for PC in 2017. The console VR plan was quietly dropped, and Windows Mixed Reality itself was retired from Windows in 2024. The most recent step is the partnership with Meta: the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, plus Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest headsets, lets you play Xbox games on a large virtual screen. That is not native VR, but it is the closest official Xbox VR experience available today.
Kinect’s legacy
Kinect sold tens of millions of units and was briefly the fastest-selling consumer electronics device. Its depth camera technology lives on in Microsoft’s Azure Kinect developer kit, in robotics and in medical research, even though it no longer has a place on Xbox.
