What is a action-adventure game?

An action-adventure game mixes combat and movement with exploration and story, usually across a large world you can roam freely.

These games care more about missions, characters and freedom than about stats. You drive, climb, sneak and fight, often in an open world with side activities. Grand Theft Auto V is a well-known example, with a three-character story and the online mode GTA Online.

Action-adventure games: quick answers

What is an action-adventure game?

An action-adventure game combines real-time action such as fighting or driving with exploration, puzzles and a story. Character growth is usually light compared with an RPG.

Does GTA V have cheat codes?

Yes. Grand Theft Auto V has button and phone cheats for story mode on PC and consoles. They do not work in GTA Online. See our GTA V codes page for the full list.

What is the difference between action-adventure and action RPG?

Both have real-time action. An action RPG adds deep character progression such as levels, skill trees and gear stats, while an action-adventure focuses on story and exploration.
