Background
Michael became a career criminal, robbing banks with a crew that included Trevor Philips, Brad Snider and others. The game opens in 2004 with a robbery in Ludendorff, North Yankton, that goes wrong. Michael had secretly made a deal with FIB agent Dave Norton: in exchange for setting up his crew, Michael fakes his death and enters witness protection. Brad is killed and secretly buried in Michael’s grave, Trevor escapes believing Michael is dead, and Michael moves to Los Santos with a new surname, De Santa.
Nine years later, in 2013, Michael has money, a mansion, a pool and a therapist, but he is bored, depressed and estranged from his family. He spends his days drinking, watching old movies and fighting with his wife and children.
Personality
Michael is charming, sarcastic and clever, but also selfish, short-tempered and full of regret. He loves classic Hollywood films and dreams of working in the movie business. He wants to be a good father and husband, yet his temper and lies keep pushing his family away. Much of his story is about a middle-aged man trying to find meaning, whether through crime, therapy, family or film. His conversations with his therapist, Dr. Isiah Friedlander, give players a funny but revealing look at his mind.
Family
- Amanda De Santa: his wife, a former stripper who now spends her time on yoga, tennis lessons and shopping. Their marriage is full of infidelity on both sides.
- Jimmy De Santa: his lazy, video-game-obsessed son, who often causes trouble.
- Tracey De Santa: his daughter, who dreams of fame and tries to get on a TV talent show.
Early in the story the family leaves Michael after his violent behavior, and winning them back becomes one of his main goals.
Special ability: bullet time
Each protagonist has a special ability that fills a meter on the screen. Michael’s ability slows down time while aiming, letting you line up headshots and take out several enemies before they react. It is excellent in gunfights, heists and shootouts. Activate it by pressing both thumbsticks on a controller or the Caps Lock key on PC, and refill the meter by getting kills and headshots. Michael also starts with strong shooting and stamina stats compared with the other protagonists.
How Michael gets back into crime
The story kicks off when Michael catches his wife’s tennis coach in his bed and chases him to a mansion owned by cartel figure Martin Madrazo, then tears down the house in anger. Madrazo demands payment for the damage, so Michael contacts Lester Crest and plans the Vangelico jewelry store heist with Franklin, his new protege. This pulls him back into his old life and sets the rest of the plot in motion.

Relationship with Trevor and Franklin
When Trevor discovers that Michael is alive, their friendship explodes into anger and suspicion, especially once Trevor learns the truth about North Yankton and Brad. Their constant arguments are a highlight of the story. With Franklin, Michael acts as a mentor and father figure, giving him a way out of street crime and into bigger jobs. See how to switch characters to play as each of them.
Michael and the endings
At the end of GTA 5, Franklin must choose between three endings. In Something Sensible (Ending A), Franklin kills Trevor. In The Time’s Come (Ending B), Franklin kills Michael after a chase to the Palmer-Taylor Power Station. In The Third Way (Ending C), the three team up against their enemies and all survive. Ending C is widely considered the canon ending, and many players choose it because Michael and Trevor both live.
Fun facts
- Michael’s surname De Santa is a nod to the Los Santos setting.
- He has his own movie career side story with Solomon Richards and the film Meltdown.
- Michael can do yoga, play tennis and go to therapy as side activities.
- Ned Luke provided both the voice and the motion capture, so Michael moves and speaks like his actor.

Michael’s side activities and strangers
Outside the main missions, Michael has his own set of activities and strangers and freaks missions. He can play golf and tennis, take yoga classes with Amanda’s instructor Fabien, attend sessions with Dr. Friedlander and join the Epsilon Program, a parody of a self-help cult, which leads to a long side story ending with a big cash reward if you complete its tasks. He can also invest in the stock market through the LCN and BAWSAQ exchanges, which is how many players make huge amounts of money by timing Lester’s assassination missions. These activities show a softer, stranger side of Michael and help build his skills.
Michael’s skills
All three protagonists have the same set of skills: special, stamina, shooting, strength, stealth, flying, driving and lung capacity. Each starts with different strengths. Michael begins with high shooting skill, which pairs perfectly with his bullet-time ability, while Franklin is the best driver and Trevor the best pilot. Skills improve as you use them, so Michael’s flying and driving can be trained through flight school and driving missions.
Where to find Michael
When you switch to Michael during free roam, he may be at home in Rockford Hills, playing golf, out driving, at the movies or in the middle of a family argument. Switching scenes give little glimpses into his daily life and are part of what makes the three-character design feel alive.
