Fortnite is free on Xbox and PlayStation, and you can even stream it for free through Xbox Cloud Gaming on a phone, browser or TV. This guide explains how to play Fortnite on Xbox and PS5, how Xbox Cloud Gaming Fortnite works, what to do when Fortnite is down on Xbox, whether Fortnite still works on Xbox 360, and whether a PlayStation 5 Fortnite bundle is worth buying.

How to play Fortnite on Xbox

  1. Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One and search for Fortnite.
  2. Select Get; the game is free.
  3. Launch it and sign in with or create an Epic Games account (you can link your Xbox account to keep progress across platforms).

You do not need Game Pass to play Fortnite online on Xbox; free-to-play games are exempt from the online subscription requirement. Xbox Fortnite runs at up to 120fps on Series X|S, and it supports crossplay with PS5, Switch, PC and mobile. Game Pass Ultimate members also get Fortnite Crew included since November 2025, which gives the battle pass, a monthly skin and V-Bucks; see the Game Pass guide.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Fortnite: play free on any device

Fortnite is one of the few games you can stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming with only a free Microsoft account, no Game Pass needed. That makes it the easiest way to play Fortnite on an iPhone, iPad, Chromebook, low-end laptop or smart TV.

  1. Go to xbox.com/play in Safari, Chrome or Edge (on iPhone, add it to your home screen for full screen).
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account.
  3. Choose Fortnite and select Play.
  4. Use touch controls on phones, or connect an Xbox or PlayStation controller via Bluetooth.

For the best results, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and expect a queue during busy times. Full setup tips are in the Xbox Cloud Gaming guide.

How to play Fortnite on PS5

Download Fortnite free from the PlayStation Store, sign in with your Epic account, and play. You do not need PlayStation Plus to play Fortnite online. On PS5, Fortnite supports the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers and runs at up to 120fps.

Is a PlayStation 5 Fortnite bundle worth it?

Sony regularly sells PS5 Fortnite bundles, such as the Fortnite Cobalt Star bundle, that include the console plus a code for an exclusive skin set and V-Bucks. Because Fortnite itself is free, the value is only in the cosmetics. A bundle is worth it if it costs the same as the standalone console, which is often the case during holiday sales; do not pay extra for it unless you really want the exclusive skins. Bundle codes are tied to the region and must be redeemed on an Epic account that has never used that bundle before.

Is Fortnite down right now on Xbox?

If Fortnite will not load on Xbox, check three things in this order:

  1. Epic Games status at status.epicgames.com and @FortniteStatus on X. Fortnite goes offline for scheduled downtime before every major update, usually early in the morning US time, for one to three hours.
  2. Xbox network status at support.xbox.com; if Xbox sign-in is down, Fortnite will not connect. See is Xbox down?
  3. Your connection: restart the router and console, and check your NAT type.

Can you play Fortnite on Xbox 360?

No. Fortnite was never released on Xbox 360 or PS3. It launched in 2017 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and it now runs on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, PC, Android and iOS (in some regions). If you only have an Xbox 360, the alternatives are streaming Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming on a phone, PC or smart TV, or upgrading to a used Xbox One or Series S, which are cheap in 2026. See our Xbox 360 and Xbox Series S hubs.

Fortnite crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation

Fortnite has full crossplay and cross-progression. Your skins, V-Bucks (with some platform rules) and battle pass progress follow your Epic Games account across Xbox, PS5, PC and mobile. To party up with friends on another console, add them as Epic friends from the in-game social menu, then invite them. Voice chat works across platforms in-game.

Best settings for Fortnite on Xbox Series X and PS5

  • 120 FPS mode: turn it on in Settings > Video if your TV or monitor supports 120Hz. It reduces input lag and makes aiming smoother.
  • Performance vs quality: on Series X and PS5 you can choose higher visual quality at 60fps; competitive players usually prefer 120fps.
  • Controller sensitivity: start with the defaults and adjust building sensitivity separately.
  • Audio: enable visualized sound effects if you play without headphones.

Fortnite on a budget

Fortnite is free, but cosmetics are not. Ways to get more for less: Fortnite Crew is included in Game Pass Ultimate, which is better value if you already use Game Pass; the battle pass pays back more V-Bucks than it costs if you complete it; and V-Bucks gift cards are sometimes discounted at retailers. Never use “free V-Bucks generator” sites: they are scams that steal accounts.

Fortnite on Xbox and PS5 FAQ

Do you need Xbox Game Pass to play Fortnite?

No. Fortnite is free-to-play and needs no subscription for online play on Xbox or PlayStation.

Is Fortnite better on PS5 or Xbox Series X?

They are almost identical. Both run at up to 120fps; the PS5 adds DualSense haptics, and Xbox adds Fortnite Crew through Game Pass Ultimate.

Can I play Fortnite on my phone with Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Yes, for free with a Microsoft account, using touch controls or a Bluetooth controller.

Why does Fortnite say servers are down?

Usually because of scheduled update downtime. Check @FortniteStatus for the expected return time.

Fortnite performance: Xbox Series X vs PS5 vs Series S

Fortnite supports a 120fps performance mode on Xbox Series X, PS5 and PS5 Pro when your TV or monitor supports 120Hz. Xbox Series S also offers 120fps, but at a lower resolution. On Xbox One and PS4 the game runs at 60fps at most and some visual features are cut. If you play competitively, turn on 120fps in the video settings and use a wired internet connection; both reduce input lag far more than any controller upgrade.

Fortnite and V-Bucks on Xbox and PlayStation

V-Bucks bought on Xbox or PlayStation are tied to your Epic account. In most cases they can be spent on any platform you link, but some console-purchased V-Bucks have historically been limited to that console’s store, so check Epic’s current V-Bucks rules before moving platforms. Game Pass Ultimate includes Fortnite Crew, which gives you the battle pass and monthly V-Bucks. You do not need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass to play Fortnite online, because it is free to play.

Keeping your account safe

Link your Xbox or PlayStation account to an Epic account with two-factor authentication. Never share your Epic login for free V-Bucks offers; these are scams that lead to stolen accounts. If your account is compromised, contact Epic support first, then Xbox or PlayStation support.

Parental controls for Fortnite

Fortnite is rated Teen, and it has voice and text chat with strangers. Parents can set limits in three places: the console (Xbox Family Settings or PS5 Family Management), the Epic account parental controls with a PIN, and the in-game settings for voice chat and mature language filters. Epic also offers cabined accounts for younger players, which turn off voice chat and purchases until a parent approves them. Setting spending limits on the console is the easiest way to avoid surprise V-Bucks charges.
