Is Xbox down right now? If you cannot sign in, join a party or download a game, the first thing to check is the official Xbox server status page at support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status. It shows every Xbox network service (the service formerly called Xbox Live) and whether it is up, limited or down. This guide explains how to read it, what to do during an Xbox outage today, how long Xbox servers are usually down, and how to tell whether the problem is Xbox or your own connection.
How to check Xbox server status
- Open support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status on your phone or PC. This is the official Xbox service status page, sometimes still called the Xbox Live status page.
- Look at the categories: Account and profile, Store and subscriptions, Cloud gaming and remote play, Gaming and social activity, TV, music and video, and Devices and networking. A green check means up; a yellow or red icon means limited or major outage.
- Expand any affected service to see which features and platforms are hit (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, mobile, web).
- Check the @XboxSupport account on X for live updates and estimated fixes.
- Compare with a third-party Xbox down detector such as Downdetector. User reports spike within minutes of a problem, often before Microsoft updates its page.
If the official page says everything is up but Downdetector shows a big spike, there is probably a real outage that Microsoft has not posted yet. If both look normal, the issue is most likely your console, account or home network.
Are Xbox servers down right now? Signs of a real outage
- You and your friends on different internet providers all get the same error.
- Sign-in fails with errors like 0x87DD0003 or 0x80A40019.
- The store will not load, or games you own say you need to buy them because licenses cannot be checked.
- Xbox party chat down: parties fail to connect or you hear nobody even though you are in the same party.
- Cloud gaming queues never finish.
When will Xbox servers be back up?
Most Xbox outages are short. Minor problems with a single feature, such as achievements or party chat, are usually fixed within one to three hours. Bigger outages that stop sign-ins or the store typically last two to eight hours. The longest Xbox network outages in recent years lasted roughly a day, usually because of a problem in Microsoft’s wider cloud infrastructure rather than Xbox alone. So how long will Xbox servers be down? Watch the status page and @XboxSupport: Microsoft posts an update when engineers have a fix and again when the service recovers.
What to do during an Xbox outage
- Set your Xbox as your home Xbox before outages happen (Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox). Your digital games then keep working offline even when license servers are down.
- Play offline or single-player games that do not need a connection.
- Do not reset your console or delete your account during an outage; it will not help and can make things worse.
- Use Discord or phone calls if party chat is down.
Xbox not working but servers are up? Check your network
- Go to Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection, then Test network speed & statistics.
- Restart your router and do a full power cycle of the console: hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds, unplug for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Check your NAT type. A Strict or Moderate NAT can break party chat and multiplayer; enable UPnP on your router. Our Xbox troubleshooting guide explains “UPnP not successful” fixes.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if Wi-Fi drops.
Why is my Xbox downloading so slow?
Slow downloads are usually not an outage. Common causes are Wi-Fi interference, other devices streaming on your network, downloads paused while you play (Xbox throttles downloads during online games), or busy Microsoft content servers on big launch days. Fixes: quit the game you are playing, check that the console is in Sleep power mode so downloads continue at full speed, use Ethernet, and clear the network cache by holding the power button to shut down fully. If a single download is stuck at 0%, cancel it and restart it from the Manage queue screen.
Xbox network vs Xbox Live: what changed?
Microsoft renamed Xbox Live to the Xbox network in 2021, and the paid Xbox Live Gold subscription became Game Pass Core in 2023 and Game Pass Essential in 2025. People still search for Xbox Live status or “is Xbox Live down”, and they mean the same Xbox network services. For subscription questions, see the Xbox Game Pass guide; if the problem is your account, the Xbox support guide lists how to reach Microsoft.
Is Fortnite or Call of Duty down instead?
Sometimes Xbox servers are fine and only one game is down. Game publishers have their own status pages: Epic Games for Fortnite, Activision for Call of Duty, EA for Battlefield and FC. Check the game’s official X account or status page before blaming Xbox. Our Fortnite on Xbox and PlayStation guide covers Fortnite outages.
Common Xbox errors during outages and what they mean
| Error | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0x87DD0003 | Sign-in service problem | Check the status page; wait or try again later |
| 0x80A40019 | Cannot reach Xbox services | Restart router and console, then test the network |
| 0x803F8001 | Game license cannot be checked | Set this console as your home Xbox, or wait for the store to recover |
| 0x87DD0006 | Billing or account info issue, often during outages | Wait, then check your Microsoft account details |
| 0x80190190 | Network or Xbox network problem | Restart networking hardware; check status |
How to get notified when Xbox services return
On the Xbox status page you can sign in and select Notify me on an active alert to get an email when it is resolved. You can also turn on notifications for the @XboxSupport account on X. Many players keep the Xbox app on their phone signed in, because it shows the same service alerts in its settings.
Is it my Xbox or the internet?
A quick way to tell: if Netflix, YouTube and other apps work on the same console, your internet is fine and the problem is either Xbox services or a specific game. If nothing works, test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If the other device also fails, the problem is your router or internet provider, and you should check your provider’s own outage page.
Xbox server status FAQ
Is Xbox down right now?
Check support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status. If every service shows a green check, Xbox is up and the issue is local.
Why are Xbox servers down so often on launch days?
Big releases and holiday mornings bring millions of new sign-ins and downloads at once. Microsoft adds capacity, but authentication and store services can still slow down for a few hours.
Does an Xbox outage affect PC Game Pass?
Often yes. PC Game Pass uses the same Microsoft account and store services, so sign-in or store outages affect the Xbox app on Windows too.
Will Microsoft compensate players for an outage?
Microsoft does not have a fixed policy, but after long outages it has occasionally added free Game Pass time. Check your Microsoft account subscription page after a major incident.
