A full Minecraft day lasts 20 minutes of real time. That includes about 10 minutes of daytime, 7 minutes of night and roughly 1.5 minutes each for sunset and sunrise. Knowing exactly how long a Minecraft day and night last helps you plan mining trips, farm growth, villager trading and when to head home before monsters spawn. This guide breaks down the full day-night cycle, explains ticks and the time command, and answers common questions about Minecraft nights.

How long is one Minecraft day?

One Minecraft day is 24,000 game ticks. The game runs at 20 ticks per second, so 24,000 ticks equal 1,200 seconds, or exactly 20 real minutes. That means 72 Minecraft days pass in a single real day if you leave your game running. One in-game hour, if you divide the day into 24 hours like a real clock, is 50 real seconds.

How long is a Minecraft night?

The dark part of the night, when hostile mobs can spawn on the surface, lasts about 7 minutes. If you count from the start of sunset to the end of sunrise, darkness and dim light last about 10 minutes, half the full cycle. During the darkest part, zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders and endermen spawn in open areas with a block light level of zero. Phantoms appear only if you have not slept for three in-game nights or more.

How long does night last if you sleep?

Sleeping skips the night entirely. You can sleep in a bed starting at sunset, around tick 12,542 in clear weather, or any time during a thunderstorm. When you sleep in single-player, the game fast-forwards to morning in a few seconds. In multiplayer, a percentage of players must sleep to skip the night; on Java this is set by the playersSleepingPercentage game rule, which defaults to 100 percent. Sleeping also sets your spawn point and resets the phantom timer. See how to make a bed.

What happens at each time of day

Morning

At sunrise, zombies and skeletons that are exposed to the sky start burning, unless they wear helmets or stand in shade or water. Villagers wake up and head to their workstations. This is the best time to leave your base.

Midday

Villagers work and restock trades, crops keep growing, and the surface is mostly safe. It is a great time to build, farm and explore above ground.

Sunset

Villagers head home to their beds, and the sky turns orange. You can sleep from this point to skip the night. Hostile mobs begin spawning as light drops.

Night

Darkness brings hostile mobs. Spiders become hostile, creepers roam, and skeletons and zombies appear in open areas. Many players spend nights mining underground, crafting, or organizing storage inside a well-lit base.

How to check the time in Minecraft

  • Clock item: craft a clock from four gold ingots around a redstone dust. Its dial shows the sun and moon position, and it works in item frames too.
  • The sky: watch the sun and moon move across the sky from east to west.
  • The time command: with cheats on, type /time query daytime to see the current tick of the day.
  • F3 screen: on Java, the debug screen shows the day count and local difficulty.

How to change the time

With cheats enabled you can control time with commands:

  • /time set day sets the time to tick 1,000, early morning.
  • /time set noon sets midday, tick 6,000.
  • /time set night sets tick 13,000.
  • /time set midnight sets tick 18,000.
  • /gamerule doDaylightCycle false freezes time, useful for building in constant daylight. On Bedrock you can also toggle Daylight Cycle in world settings.

For more, read how to enable cheats and how to change tick speed, which speeds up crops but not the length of the day.

Moon phases

The moon cycles through eight phases, one per night, from full moon to new moon. Moon phases affect slime spawning in swamps, which is highest during a full moon, and the chance of spiders spawning with status effects on harder difficulties. A full lunar cycle takes eight Minecraft days, or 160 real minutes.

Weather and the day cycle

Rain does not change the length of the day, but thunderstorms make the sky dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn even at midday, and you can sleep during a thunderstorm to skip it. In deserts and savannas it never rains, while in snowy biomes rain falls as snow.

Planning your day: survival tips

  • Spend the first day gathering wood, crafting tools and building a simple shelter before night falls at around the 10-minute mark.
  • Place torches around your base so mobs cannot spawn nearby; see how to make a torch.
  • Use nights to mine, since caves are dark at all times anyway.
  • Sleep regularly to prevent phantoms and to skip dangerous nights.
  • Carry a bed when exploring far from home so you can skip nights anywhere.

Is the day length the same on Bedrock and Java?

Can you make days longer?

You can freeze time with the doDaylightCycle game rule, but you cannot change the cycle length without mods.

How the day cycle affects farming

Crops in Minecraft grow based on random ticks, not on the clock, so they keep growing during the day and at night as long as they have enough light. Wheat, carrots and potatoes need a light level of at least 9, which sunlight provides during the day; at night they only keep growing if torches or other light sources are nearby. Trees grow from saplings the same way. Animals breed and baby animals grow on timers measured in ticks, so a baby takes about 20 minutes, one Minecraft day, to grow up. If you plan an animal farm, check back once per day to breed the next generation.

How the day cycle affects villagers

Villagers follow a daily schedule. In the morning they wake, gather at the village meeting point and go to their job sites. They work and restock trades up to twice per day while they can reach their workstation. In the evening they return to their beds and sleep through the night. Zombie sieges can happen at night in villages, so protect villagers with walls, lighting and iron golems. If you run a trading hall, give each villager a bed and a workstation so their routine continues even when they are inside your base.

Counting days in your world

Many players like to track how many days they have survived. On Java Edition the F3 screen shows the current day, and the statistics menu shows total play time. On Bedrock, turn on Show Days Played in world settings to display a day counter under your coordinates. Speedrunners and hardcore players often set goals such as defeating the Ender Dragon within a certain number of Minecraft days.

Now that you know the timing, plan each 20-minute cycle so you are home before dark.
