A bed is the most important item you can craft on your first day in Minecraft. It lets you skip the night, sets your respawn point so you return to your base after dying, and stops phantoms from spawning. Making a bed only needs wool and wooden planks, but getting three wool of the same color early in the game can be tricky. This guide explains how to make a bed in Minecraft, how to get wool fast, how sleeping works, how to dye beds, and the dangerous things that happen when you try to sleep in the Nether or the End.

Quick answer: bed recipe

  1. Collect 3 wool of the same color.
  2. Collect 3 wooden planks of any wood type.
  3. On a crafting table, place the 3 wool across the middle row and the 3 planks across the bottom row.
  4. Take your bed.

The bed’s color matches the wool you used. You can mix plank types, but the wool must all be the same color.

How to get wool for a bed

Shear or kill sheep

The fastest way is to find sheep, which spawn in most grassy biomes. Killing a sheep drops one wool. Using shears on a sheep drops one to three wool and the sheep regrows its wool after eating grass, so shears are much better in the long run. Shears need two iron ingots; see how to make shears. White sheep are the most common, so most first beds are white.

Craft wool from string

Four string in a two by two square on a crafting table make one white wool. String comes from spiders, which drop it when killed, and from cobwebs in mineshafts, broken with a sword. Twelve string make three wool, enough for a bed. Read how to get string.

Find beds in villages

Village houses have beds you can break and take. Be careful: villagers need beds to breed and to stay in the village, so take one only if you do not plan to use that village.

How to sleep in a bed

Place the bed on the ground, then use it. You can sleep:

  • At night, after sunset.
  • During a thunderstorm, at any time of day.

You cannot sleep if hostile mobs are close by, which shows the message “You may not rest now; there are monsters nearby.” You also cannot sleep during the day in clear weather, but using the bed still sets your spawn point. When you sleep, the game fast-forwards to morning and clears rain. In multiplayer, enough players must sleep to skip the night. See how long a Minecraft day lasts.

Why beds matter: respawn points and phantoms

When you sleep or use a bed, it becomes your spawn point. If you die, you respawn at the bed rather than at the world spawn, which might be far from your base. If your bed is destroyed or blocked, you return to the world spawn. Sleeping also resets the phantom timer: phantoms are flying undead mobs that start spawning at night if you have not slept for three in-game days. Sleeping regularly keeps them away.

How to dye a bed

To change a bed’s color, craft it from wool of the color you want. On current versions you can also dye a white bed by placing it in a crafting grid with a dye. Dye sheep before shearing them to get colored wool directly: use a dye on a sheep and it grows that color of wool forever. See our Minecraft dye guide for every color.

Never sleep in the Nether or the End

Beds explode when you try to use them in the Nether or the End. The blast is stronger than TNT and sets fire to the area, which can kill you instantly. Expert players use this on purpose to fight the Ender Dragon and to mine ancient debris, a technique called bed bombing, but it is very risky. For a respawn point in the Nether, use a respawn anchor charged with glowstone instead.

Bed tips for survival

  • Carry a bed on long trips so you can sleep anywhere and set a temporary spawn point.
  • Place your bed against a wall in a fully lit room, so mobs cannot spawn near it.
  • Keep a spare set of wool in a chest in case your bed is destroyed.
  • In multiplayer, every player needs their own bed for their own spawn point.
  • Beds stop falls: landing on a bed reduces fall damage by half and makes you bounce.

Bed design ideas

Beds are also decoration. Place two beds side by side for a double bed, use trapdoors or slabs at the foot of the bed for a bed frame, put lanterns or candles on bedside tables made from barrels, and add a carpet under the bed for a rug. Bunk beds can be made by placing slabs above a bed and another bed on top, using ladders on the side. Colored beds help decorate themed rooms, such as blue beds for a ship cabin or red beds for a castle.

Villagers and beds

Villagers need beds. Each villager claims one bed, and villagers only breed when there are more free beds than villagers. If you build a village or trading hall, place extra beds where villagers can reach them. Breaking beds in a village reduces its population over time. Read how to breed villagers.

Java vs Bedrock differences

The bed recipe is identical on both editions. On Bedrock, beds can be dyed after crafting by combining them with dyes, and you can sleep slightly earlier in the evening. Bed explosions in the Nether and End are the same on both editions, and both use the same spawn point rules.

Bed FAQ

How do you make a bed in Minecraft?

Place 3 wool in the middle row and 3 wooden planks in the bottom row of a crafting table.

Can you make a bed with different color wool?

No. All three wool must be the same color.

Why can’t I sleep in my bed?

It is daytime, monsters are nearby, or the bed is obstructed.

Does a bed set your spawn point?

Yes, when you sleep in it or use it.

What happens if you sleep in the Nether?

The bed explodes. Use a respawn anchor instead.

How do you get wool without shears?

Kill sheep for one wool each, or craft wool from four string.

Sleeping in multiplayer and on servers

On Java servers, the playersSleepingPercentage game rule decides how many players must be in bed to skip the night; the default is 100 percent, but many servers set it to 50 or even one player. On Bedrock Realms and worlds, the Players Sleeping Percentage setting does the same job. If you are the only one trying to sleep on a busy server, ask others to join you, or check whether the server has a vote-to-skip system. Sleeping still sets your personal spawn point even if the night is not skipped.

Bed colors and dyeing

The bed color matches the wool used in the bottom row of the recipe, so three white wool makes a white bed and three red wool makes a red bed. You can also craft a white bed with one dye to recolor it in both Java and Bedrock, which is the fastest way to match a bedroom theme once you already have beds. Colors have no gameplay effect: every bed sets spawn and skips the night the same way.
