How to Find a Village in Minecraft (Biomes, Locate Command and Tips)

How to find a village in Minecraft: which biomes have villages, signs to spot from far away, locate commands, seed maps and what to do when you find one.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated November 5, 2026

Villages are one of the best things to find early in a Minecraft world. They have free food in their farms, beds to sleep in, chests with loot, iron golems for protection and, most of all, villagers to trade with for emeralds, enchanted books and tools. But they only generate in certain biomes, so wandering randomly can take a long time. This guide explains how to find a village in Minecraft, which biomes to search, what to look for, how to use commands and seed maps, and what to do once you arrive.

Quick answer: how to find a village

  1. Head to a village biome: plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy plains or meadow.
  2. Climb to high ground or build a quick pillar to see far across flat land.
  3. Look for paths, farms, roofs, bells and campfire smoke.
  4. Follow the paths to the village center.

With cheats on, use /locate structure #minecraft:village on Java or /locate structure village on Bedrock to get the coordinates of the nearest village. See the /locate command.

Which biomes have villages?

BiomeVillage style
Plains and sunflower plainsOak houses with cobblestone, the classic village
MeadowPlains-style villages in the mountains
DesertSandstone houses with flat roofs
SavannaAcacia houses with orange terracotta
TaigaSpruce cabins with campfires and pumpkin farms
Snowy plainsSnowy spruce and stripped log houses, and the chance of zombie villages

Villages do not generate in forests, jungles, swamps, oceans, mushroom fields, badlands or mountains other than meadows, so do not waste time searching there. Plains are the most common village biome and the easiest to search because they are flat and open.

Signs of a village

  • Dirt paths: lines of dirt path blocks or sandstone and gravel paths through grass or sand.
  • Farms: neat rows of wheat, carrots, potatoes or beetroots next to water.
  • Roofs and towers: rows of houses, a church tower or a smithy roof standing out on flat land.
  • Campfire smoke: taiga and snowy villages often have campfires whose smoke you can see from far away.
  • Bells: the bell in the village meeting point.
  • Iron golems and villagers: wandering on the edge of the village.
  • Light at night: village lamp posts and torches glow in the dark.

Best ways to search

Climb high and look around

From a hill or a pillar of dirt 20 blocks high, you can see a long way across plains and deserts. Turn slowly and look for anything that is not natural, like straight lines, roofs or farms.

Travel fast

  • Boats on rivers: villages are often built near rivers. See how to make a boat.
  • Horses: cover a lot of flat ground quickly. See horses.
  • Elytra: in the late game, fly high above biomes to spot villages from the air.

Use coordinates and a map

A map fills in as you explore, so you can see where you have already searched. Turn on coordinates so you can mark the village and return. See how to make a map and how to see coordinates.

Seed maps

Online seed map tools show villages for any seed, version and edition. Type /seed in game to get your seed, enter it in the tool, and it shows the coordinates of every nearby village. See the /seed command.

Village seeds

If you are starting a new world, use a seed known for spawning next to a village. Many players share village spawn seeds for each new version.

What to do when you find a village

  • Check the chests: blacksmiths, cartographers, temples and houses can have iron, diamonds, saddles, bread and more.
  • Grab food from the farms: break mature crops and replant them.
  • Sleep in a bed: to skip the night and set your spawn point.
  • Light it up: place torches so zombies cannot spawn inside.
  • Protect the villagers: zombies can turn villagers into zombie villagers, and raids attack villages if you have Bad Omen.
  • Trade: villagers buy common items like wheat, paper and coal for emeralds and sell useful items. Librarians can sell Mending. See what Mending does.
  • Breed villagers: give them beds and food to grow the village. See how to breed villagers.

Zombie villages and abandoned villages

A small number of villages generate as zombie villages, full of zombie villagers and with no torches. They are dangerous at night but can be turned into normal villages by curing the zombie villagers with a splash potion of Weakness and a golden apple. See how to make a weakness potion. Abandoned Camps, added in 2026, are different: they are small tents with loot, not villages.

Villages in Java vs Bedrock

Villages generate in the same biomes in both editions, though layouts and building sets differ slightly. The locate command spelling differs: Java uses the tag #minecraft:village to find any village type, while Bedrock uses village. Seed maps work for both editions as long as you pick the right one.

How far away are villages?

Villages are spread across the world on a rough grid, with large gaps between them. In plains and other village biomes, you can usually expect to find one within a few hundred blocks, but in a world where you spawn in a forest or jungle, the nearest village biome itself may be far away. If you have walked more than a thousand blocks without luck, try a different direction or follow a river, which often leads to flatter land. On a map, villages show up as clusters of paths and buildings, so filling in a map while you travel is a reliable way to spot one even from a distance.

Common problems

  • The locate command says it cannot find one: check the spelling for your edition, and make sure you are in the Overworld.
  • The village is empty: zombies or a raid killed the villagers. Bring two villagers in a boat or minecart and give them beds to restart it.
  • Villagers keep disappearing: they may be wandering off. Fence the village and light it up.
