Coordinates tell you exactly where you are in a Minecraft world. They are essential for finding your way home, sharing locations with friends, linking Nether portals, using commands like /tp, and finding structures. By default, coordinates are hidden on some platforms, so new players often ask how to turn them on. This guide shows how to see coordinates in Minecraft Java and Bedrock on PC, Mac, consoles and mobile, explains what X, Y and Z mean, and shares tips for using coordinates to navigate.
Quick answer: how to see coordinates
| Edition and device | How to show coordinates |
|---|---|
| Java on Windows or Linux | Press F3 (Fn + F3 on many laptops) |
| Java on Mac | Press Fn + F3, or Fn + Option + F3 on some Macs |
| Bedrock on any device | Turn on Show Coordinates in world settings |
| Bedrock with cheats | Type /gamerule showcoordinates true |
| Realms and servers | Owner or operator enables Show Coordinates |
How to turn on coordinates in Minecraft Java
Java Edition does not have a separate coordinates toggle. Instead, coordinates are part of the debug screen:
- Load into your world.
- Press F3. On laptops and some keyboards, press Fn + F3. On Mac, try Fn + F3 or Fn + Option + F3.
- Look at the left side of the screen for the line labeled XYZ. These are your exact coordinates. The line labeled Block shows the block you are standing in, and Facing shows your direction.
- Press F3 again to hide the screen.
The debug screen also shows the biome, light level, chunk and other information. In recent versions you can customize what the debug screen shows, so if you do not see coordinates, check your debug overlay settings. If a server or world has the reducedDebugInfo game rule turned on, coordinates are hidden from the F3 screen.
Useful Java shortcuts
- F3 + C: copies your location as a teleport command to the clipboard, handy for sharing with friends.
- F3 + G: shows chunk borders, useful for farms and slime chunks.
- F3 + B: shows hitboxes.
How to turn on coordinates in Minecraft Bedrock
Bedrock Edition has a simple toggle that works on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS and Android:
- Open the pause menu and choose Settings, or edit the world from the world list.
- Go to Game settings.
- Under World Options, turn on Show Coordinates.
- Return to the game. Your position appears in the top-left corner as Position: X, Y, Z.
You can also turn on coordinates when creating a world, in the same Game settings section. Turning on Show Coordinates does not disable achievements, so it is safe in survival worlds.
Using a command
If cheats are enabled, type /gamerule showcoordinates true in chat. Type false to hide them again. This is handy for server and Realm operators who want to control what players see. The related game rule showdaysplayed shows how many in-game days the world has existed.
On Realms and servers
On a Realm, only the owner can change world settings, so ask the owner to enable Show Coordinates. On Bedrock servers, the server operator controls the game rule. Some servers hide coordinates on purpose for survival challenge or PvP reasons.
What do X, Y and Z mean?
| Axis | Direction | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| X | East (positive) and west (negative) | Increases as you walk east |
| Y | Height, from Y -64 at bedrock to Y 320 at the build limit | Sea level is Y 63 |
| Z | South (positive) and north (negative) | Increases as you walk south |
Coordinates of 0, 0 on X and Z are the center of the world, not your spawn point, although spawn is usually nearby. The Y value is especially useful for mining: diamonds are most common deep underground around Y -58, while iron peaks around Y 16 and in mountains.
How to use coordinates
- Find your way home: write down your base coordinates as soon as you build it. If you get lost, walk until your X and Z match.
- Teleport: with cheats on, use /tp x y z to jump to any location. See how to teleport in Minecraft.
- Link Nether portals: divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether coordinates. See Nether portal coordinates.
- Find structures: /locate gives coordinates for villages, strongholds and more. See how to use /locate.
- Share locations: send friends your X, Y, Z so they can meet you.
Other ways to navigate without coordinates
- Compass: points to your world spawn, or to a lodestone you link it to.
- Recovery compass: points to where you last died.
- Maps: show the area around you; see how to make a map.
- The sun and moon: they rise in the east and set in the west, so you can always find directions.
- Locator bar: in recent versions, a bar on the HUD shows the direction of other players in multiplayer.
Troubleshooting
- F3 does nothing on a laptop: press Fn + F3, or turn off Fn lock.
- Coordinates option is greyed out on Bedrock: you are not the world owner; ask the host.
- F3 shows no XYZ: the reducedDebugInfo game rule is on, or your debug overlay hides that line.
- Mac F3 changes brightness: use Fn + F3, or enable standard function keys in macOS keyboard settings.

Coordinates on consoles and mobile
On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, the Show Coordinates toggle is in the same place: pause the game, choose Settings, then Game, and scroll to World Options. On iPhone, iPad and Android, tap the pause button at the top of the screen to reach Settings. If you created the world on another device, the setting travels with the world, so once it is on it stays on everywhere you load that world. Coordinates appear in the top-left corner of the screen, above your hotbar items on touch controls.
Keeping a coordinate log
Experienced players keep a list of important coordinates: base, spawn, villages, Nether portals, strongholds, ocean monuments and farms. Write them in a book and quill (see how to make a book), on signs in your base, or in a note on your phone. On servers, sharing your base coordinates publicly can lead to griefing, so only give them to people you trust.
Coordinates in the Nether and End
The Nether uses the same X, Y, Z system, but every block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld horizontally. The Nether roof sits at Y 128, and the End main island is around 0, 0 with the exit portal in the center. In the End, outer islands begin about 1,000 blocks from the center, so write down your gateway coordinates before exploring.
If you play on a shared Bedrock world and the host has turned coordinates off, a compass or a locator map is the fair alternative many survival servers allow.
Coordinates vs chunk coordinates
The F3 screen in Java also shows a Chunk line. A chunk is a 16 by 16 column of blocks, and chunk coordinates help when building farms that must sit inside one chunk, finding slime chunks, or keeping redstone loaded. Divide a block X or Z by 16 and round down to get the chunk number.
