How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft: Best Y Level (2026)

What level diamonds are at in Minecraft, where to find diamonds, the best mining methods, which pickaxe you need and how Fortune increases diamond drops.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated October 28, 2026

Diamonds are the most famous resource in Minecraft. You need them for the best tools, armor, an enchanting table and the netherite upgrade path, so finding diamonds is a milestone in every survival world. Since the Caves and Cliffs update changed world height, the best diamond level has changed too, and many older guides now give the wrong Y level. This guide explains what level diamonds are at in Minecraft, the best ways to find them, which pickaxe you need, how Fortune works, and where to find diamonds in chests, for Java and Bedrock Edition.

What level are diamonds in Minecraft?

Diamond ore generates from Y 16 down to the bottom of the world at Y -64, and it becomes more common the deeper you go. The best level to mine is around Y -58 to Y -59, just above the bedrock layers. Most players strip-mine at Y -58 to get high diamond rates while staying clear of the bedrock floor.

Question Answer
Diamond Y range Y 16 to Y -64
Best Y level About Y -58 to -59
Pickaxe needed Iron, diamond or netherite
Diamonds per ore 1, or up to 4 with Fortune III
Ore type deep down Deepslate diamond ore below Y 0
Lava risk Lava lakes are common below Y -54

Why older guides say Y 11 or Y 12

Before version 1.18, the world started at Y 0, and diamonds were most common around Y 5 to Y 12. Since 1.18, the world goes down to Y -64, and diamond ore is most common at the very bottom. If a guide tells you to mine at Y 11, it was written for the old world height.

How to find diamonds: the best methods

1. Strip mining at Y -58

Dig down in a staircase to around Y -58, then dig long tunnels two blocks high. Leave a gap of two or three blocks between parallel tunnels, called branch mining, so you see every ore without digging every block. This is reliable and safe, and it finds diamonds that never touch air. Diamond ore is less likely to generate where it would be exposed to air, so tunneling through solid deepslate finds more diamonds than walking caves.

2. Caving

Exploring large caves and deep dark areas at low Y levels lets you see lots of exposed ore quickly. It is faster for some players but more dangerous, with mobs, lava and Wardens in the deep dark. Bring torches, food, a shield and a water bucket.

3. Exploring structures

Diamonds and diamond gear appear in chests in many structures. This is a good way to get your first diamonds without mining.

Where to find diamonds in chests

Structure What you can find
Buried treasure Often diamonds, plus a Heart of the Sea
Village chests (toolsmith and weaponsmith) Diamonds in some chests
Desert temples Diamonds among gold and emeralds
Jungle temples and mineshafts Occasional diamonds
Shipwreck treasure chests Sometimes diamonds
Ancient cities Diamond horse armor, enchanted diamond leggings and more
End cities Diamonds and enchanted diamond tools and armor
Bastion remnants Diamond gear and netherite pieces

What pickaxe do you need to mine diamonds?

You need an iron pickaxe or better. A stone or wooden pickaxe will break diamond ore without dropping anything, wasting the ore. Always check your hotbar before you hit a diamond block. An iron pickaxe takes 3 iron ingots and 2 sticks.

Use Fortune for more diamonds

Fortune increases how many diamonds drop from each ore: Fortune I gives up to 2, Fortune II up to 3 and Fortune III up to 4 diamonds, with Fortune III averaging about 2.2 diamonds per ore. If you have a Fortune pickaxe, save diamond ore for it. Silk Touch drops the ore block itself, which you can carry and mine later with Fortune.

What to make with your first diamonds

  1. Diamond pickaxe (3 diamonds): mines obsidian and ancient debris. See how to make obsidian.
  2. Enchanting table (2 diamonds): unlocks enchantments; see how to make a book for the bookshelves.
  3. Diamond sword (2 diamonds) and armor, starting with the chestplate (8) for the most protection.
  4. Jukebox (1 diamond) if you want music.

Later, upgrade diamond gear to netherite at a smithing table with a netherite upgrade template and a netherite ingot. Diamonds are also needed to copy smithing templates, which costs 7 diamonds per copy.

Diamond mining safety tips

  • Carry a water bucket to put out fire and turn lava into obsidian.
  • Never dig straight down; you can fall into lava or a cave.
  • Listen for lava popping and watch for orange light through gaps.
  • Avoid the deep dark sculk areas unless you are prepared; sculk shriekers summon the Warden.
  • Bring a bed or set spawn near your mine so a death does not cost you a long walk.
  • Light your tunnels to stop mobs spawning behind you.

How rare are diamonds?

Diamond ore is one of the rarest ores in the game, but strip mining at the right level usually finds a vein every few minutes. A typical diamond vein has 1 to 8 ores, with smaller veins being most common. A full hour of branch mining at Y -58 commonly yields a few stacks of iron and redstone and around 10 to 30 diamonds, more with Fortune III. Results vary a lot with luck.

Tips for finding diamonds faster

  • Use an Efficiency pickaxe and a Haste beacon to tunnel quickly.
  • Drink a night vision potion to see ores in dark caves; see the potions guide.
  • Check the walls of ravines and large caves near the bottom of the world.
  • Mine around lava pools carefully; diamonds often sit nearby, and you can turn the lava into obsidian.
  • Use coordinates to check your Y level as you dig.

Java vs Bedrock

Diamond generation is the same in both editions: Y 16 to Y -64, most common near the bottom, with fewer exposed to air. Bedrock players often mine at Y -58 as well. Fortune and pickaxe rules are identical.

Diamond FAQ

What level are diamonds in Minecraft?

Diamonds generate from Y 16 down to Y -64, and are most common around Y -58 to -59.

Where is the best place to find diamonds?

Strip mine or branch mine at about Y -58, or explore deep caves near the bottom of the world.

What pickaxe mines diamonds?

Iron, diamond or netherite.

How many diamonds do you need for full armor?

24: helmet 5, chestplate 8, leggings 7 and boots 4.

Do diamonds generate in the Nether?

No diamond ore in the Nether, but bastion chests can contain diamond gear.

Diamonds and the deep dark

Deep dark biomes and ancient cities sit at the same low Y levels as the best diamond layers, so many players accidentally tunnel into them. You will know you are close when you see blue-black sculk blocks spreading across the stone. Sculk sensors detect vibrations from walking, mining and placing blocks, and sculk shriekers summon the Warden after a few warnings. Sneak to avoid triggering sensors, place wool to muffle vibrations, and leave the area if the screen starts to pulse dark. The diamonds are not worth losing your gear to the Warden, and plenty of diamond ore exists outside the deep dark.

Diamond blocks and storage

Nine diamonds craft into a block of diamond, which saves chest space and is used in beacon pyramids. A full beacon pyramid made only of diamond blocks takes 164 blocks, or 1,476 diamonds, so most players use iron blocks instead and keep diamonds for gear. You can always craft a block back into nine diamonds, so storing them as blocks has no downside.
