Cake is Minecraft’s party food. It is a block you place on a table and share with friends, slice by slice, and with a candle on top it becomes the centerpiece of any birthday build. It takes a few different ingredients from farms and animals, which makes it a fun little project. This guide explains how to make a cake in Minecraft, where to get each ingredient, how eating cake works, and how to make candle cakes.
Quick answer: cake recipe
| Milk bucket | Milk bucket | Milk bucket |
| Sugar | Egg | Sugar |
| Wheat | Wheat | Wheat |
3 milk buckets, 2 sugar, 1 egg and 3 wheat make 1 cake. After crafting you get your 3 empty buckets back. The recipe is the same on Java, Bedrock and consoles, and it needs a crafting table.
How to get the ingredients
Milk buckets
Craft a bucket from 3 iron ingots in a V shape, then use it on a cow, mooshroom or goat to fill it with milk. You need three buckets of milk at once, so craft three buckets (9 iron ingots) or milk one bucket at a time and store them. See how to make a bucket and what cows eat.
Sugar
Put sugar cane in a crafting grid to get 1 sugar. Sugar cane grows next to water on sand, dirt and grass. A honey bottle also crafts into 3 sugar. See how to get sugar.
Egg
Chickens lay an egg every 5 to 10 minutes. Keep a few chickens in a pen and pick up the eggs, or build a simple egg farm with a hopper under the chickens. Since 2025 there are warm, temperate and cold chickens that lay matching eggs, and any of them works. See what chickens eat.
Wheat
Grow wheat from wheat seeds on farmland near water, or harvest it from village farms. Hay bales crafted back into wheat also work: one hay bale gives 9 wheat. See how to make bread.

How to eat cake
- Place the cake on top of any block. It cannot be picked up again once placed.
- Use the cake to eat one slice.
- Each slice restores 2 hunger points (one drumstick) and a little saturation.
- A full cake has 7 slices, so it restores 14 hunger points in total.
You can only eat cake when you are hungry, unless you are in Creative or on Peaceful. Other players can eat the same cake, which makes it perfect for sharing on a server.
Is cake a good food?
Cake restores a lot of hunger in total, but only a little saturation per slice, so you get hungry again soon. It is also expensive to make compared with bread, cooked meat or golden carrots. Its real strengths are that it is shared, it can be eaten very quickly slice after slice, and it does not take up inventory space once placed. Use cake for parties and bases, and carry steak or golden carrots for adventures.
How to make a candle cake
- Craft a candle from 1 string and 1 honeycomb. Dye it any color by combining it with a dye.
- Place a full, uneaten cake.
- Use the candle on the cake. It sits on top.
- Light the candle with flint and steel or a fire charge.
A candle only goes on a cake that has not been eaten. Eating a slice of a candle cake drops the candle. See how to get honeycomb and how to make flint and steel.
Cake and redstone
A comparator placed next to a cake outputs a signal that depends on how many slices are left, from 14 for a full cake down to 2 for one slice. Players use this for party games, secret doors that open when someone eats the cake, and slice counters.
Where to find cake
Cake does not appear in chests or villager trades, so crafting is the only way to get one in survival. Cake is also a 100 percent compost item: one cake always adds a layer to a composter, though that is an expensive way to make bone meal.
Cake in Java vs Bedrock
The recipe, slices and candle cakes work the same in both editions, and comparator values are identical. Everything in this guide applies to both.
Cake build ideas
- A bakery with cakes on counters, hay bales and barrels of wheat.
- A birthday room with candle cakes in every color, banners and fireworks. See how to make fireworks.
- A wedding hall with a tall stack of cakes on slabs.
- A kitchen with a cake on the table and a smoker and furnace nearby.
Common problems
- The recipe does not work: check the layout, and make sure the buckets are full of milk.
- I cannot pick the cake up: placed cake can only be eaten, never picked up. Place it where you want it.
- I cannot eat the cake: your hunger bar is full. Wait until you are hungry.
- The candle will not go on: someone already ate a slice. Use a new cake.
How to set up a cake farm
If you love cake, or you are planning a party build with dozens of them, it is worth farming all four ingredients next to each other. Put a small cow pen beside a wheat field so you can milk cows and harvest wheat in one trip, add a chicken pen with a hopper under the floor to collect eggs automatically, and plant sugar cane along a water channel next to the field. With three buckets kept in a chest by your crafting table, you can bake a cake in under a minute whenever you need one.
