How to Make a Bucket in Minecraft (Recipe, Uses and Tips)

The Minecraft bucket recipe, what a bucket can carry and the best ways to use water, lava and milk buckets.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated November 6, 2026

The bucket is one of the most useful tools in Minecraft. With one you can carry water to put out fires, move lava for a cobblestone generator, drink milk to cure effects, scoop up fish and axolotls, and set up water elevators and farms. It costs only iron, so you can make it early. This guide explains how to make a bucket in Minecraft, what it can hold and the best ways to use it.

Quick answer: bucket recipe

Put 3 iron ingots in a crafting table in a V shape: one in the middle left slot, one in the bottom middle slot and one in the middle right slot. You get 1 bucket.

If you need iron, see where to find iron. Smelt raw iron in a furnace to get ingots.

Water bucket uses

  • Infinite water: dig a 2 by 1 hole, fill both blocks with water, and the water becomes renewable. Scoop one block and it refills.
  • Fall damage: place water below you just before you land to take no damage. This is called a water bucket clutch.
  • Crops: water within 4 blocks of farmland keeps it hydrated.
  • Elevators and transport: see how to make a water elevator.
  • Fire: put out fires fast.
  • Obsidian: pour water over lava to make obsidian or cobblestone. See how to make obsidian.
  • Mob transport: push mobs around with flowing water.

Water does not stay in the Nether; it evaporates when you place it.

Lava bucket uses

  • Fuel: a lava bucket smelts 100 items in a furnace, more than any other common fuel.
  • Cobblestone generators: lava and water side by side make endless cobblestone.
  • Nether portals: carry lava to make an obsidian frame in place. See how to get netherite for what you do once you reach the Nether.
  • Traps: classic, but dangerous. Always keep a water bucket handy.

Milk bucket uses

Right-click a cow with an empty bucket to get milk. Drinking milk removes all active potion effects, good and bad, including Mining Fatigue from elder guardians and Poison from spiders. Milk is also an ingredient in cake. See what cows eat to breed them.

Other bucket uses

  • Powder snow bucket: pick up powder snow safely and place it as decoration.
  • Fish, axolotl and tadpole buckets: move mobs to your base or aquarium. See how to breed and tame axolotls.
  • Water cauldrons: fill a cauldron to wash banners and dyed armour.

Bucket stack sizes

Empty buckets stack to 16. Full buckets of water, lava or milk do not stack, so carry only what you need. See stack sizes and chest math to plan inventory space.

Bucket safety tips

  • Never place lava next to wood or leaves; fire can spread fast.
  • Carry at least one water bucket when you explore caves or the Nether.
  • Drink milk before a boss fight if you have a bad effect.
  • Do not drop buckets in lava; items burn there.

Bedrock and Java differences

The recipe is the same on both editions. Some details of buckets and fish, as well as how water spreads, can differ slightly between versions, but the basics are identical.

Common problems

  • The recipe does not work: check the V shape with three ingots, with no ingot in the top row.
  • The bucket will not pick up water: it must be a source block, not a flowing one.
  • The water vanished: you placed it in the Nether, or in an area where it disappears.

Step by step: your first bucket

  1. Mine at least three iron ore or raw iron blocks. See where to find iron.
  2. Smelt the raw iron in a furnace to make three ingots.
  3. Open a crafting table and place an iron ingot in the middle left, bottom middle and middle right slots.
  4. Take your bucket from the output slot.

Many players make two or three buckets in a row, since one goes to water, one to lava and one to milk.

Water bucket tricks

The water bucket clutch is a classic move. When you fall from a height, look straight down and place water on the ground just before you land. You will take no fall damage, and you can pick the water back up. Water also pushes items and mobs, so you can build item transport streams, mob farms and boat paths. If you place a water source on a slab or in a waterlogged block, you can also carry water to places where it cannot flow freely.

Cobblestone and obsidian generators

Put a lava source block at the end of a trench and let water flow into it. Where flowing water touches flowing lava, you get cobblestone. Where it touches a lava source, you get obsidian. A stone generator gives you endless cobblestone to smelt into stone and craft into stone bricks. Always stand behind a block so you do not fall into the lava while mining.

Using buckets safely with mobs

Do not use a lava bucket near villagers, pets or farms. Use water to block creepers by pushing them away, and use a milk bucket to cure Weakness or Poison before fights. You can also pick up fish and axolotls in a bucket and release them into your pond, which is the only way to move them without losing them.

Bucket FAQ for new players

Can you put a bucket of water in a cauldron? Yes, and that fills it to the top, which lets you wash banners and dyed armor and collect rainwater later. Can you place a bucket of fish anywhere? Yes, but only in water, so drop it into a pond or ocean and the fish swims away. Can you milk a baby cow? No, only adult cows give milk. Can you milk a mooshroom? Yes, and with a bowl you can also get mushroom stew. Keeping a small stack of empty buckets in a chest near your farm is a good habit, because you will use them constantly.

Bucket and lava safety checklist

Before you place lava, check that the area has no wood, leaves, wool or items you want to keep. Stand on solid ground, keep a water bucket in your hotbar and place the lava away from your feet. If lava flows toward you, place water between you and it, then collect the lava again. Never place lava above your head in a cave, and never carry it near a boat or minecart that you plan to ride. A few seconds of care saves a lot of lost items.
