How to Play GTA RP: FiveM Setup, Servers and Rules (2026)

How to play GTA RP on PC: what you need, how to install FiveM, how to choose a roleplay server, and the rules every new player should know.

Game Respawned Editorial TeamUpdated October 28, 2026

GTA RP, short for Grand Theft Auto roleplay, is one of the most popular ways to play GTA 5 on PC. Instead of racing through missions, players join special servers where everyone acts as a character: a police officer, a paramedic, a mechanic, a gang member, a lawyer or a taxi driver. Stories unfold through improvised conversations and player-run events, and streamers have made servers like NoPixel famous. This guide explains what GTA RP is, what you need, how to install FiveM, how to choose a server, and the rules you must follow to have a good time.

What is GTA RP?

GTA RP is not a separate game. It runs on modified multiplayer frameworks for the PC version of GTA 5, which let communities host their own servers with custom scripts, jobs, cars, maps and economies. On an RP server you stay in character, follow server rules and interact with other players as if the city were real. A traffic stop can turn into a twenty-minute conversation, a bank robbery can be planned over several days, and a mechanic can build a business from scratch. It is closer to live improvised theatre than to normal GTA Online.

What you need to play GTA RP

  • A legitimate PC copy of GTA 5, either GTA V Legacy or GTA V Enhanced on Steam, the Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Roleplay frameworks do not work on PlayStation or Xbox.
  • A PC that runs GTA 5 well, ideally with an SSD and at least 16GB of RAM, because RP servers add custom content.
  • A working microphone. Almost every serious server requires voice chat, and roleplay is mostly spoken.
  • A Discord account, because communities organize applications, rules and announcements on Discord.
  • A roleplay framework, usually FiveM, which is free.

How to install FiveM

  1. Make sure GTA 5 is installed and has been launched at least once.
  2. Download FiveM from the official website, fivem.net. Avoid third-party download sites.
  3. Run the installer and choose a folder outside Program Files, for example C:/FiveM.
  4. Launch FiveM and let it find your GTA 5 installation and download its files.
  5. Sign in with or create a Cfx.re account.
  6. Browse the server list, or connect directly to a server you found on Discord.

FiveM is maintained by Cfx.re, which Rockstar Games acquired in August 2023, so it is now officially supported rather than a grey-area mod. Rockstar also published rules for creators and servers, which prohibit things like real-money gambling and unauthorized use of trademarks.

How to choose a GTA RP server

There are thousands of servers, from huge whitelisted communities to small friendly groups. Consider:

  • Whitelisted vs public: whitelisted servers, such as NoPixel’s main server, require an application and often a waiting period. They have stricter rules and better roleplay. Public servers let you join immediately but quality varies.
  • Serious vs casual: serious servers expect long, realistic roleplay and punish breaking character. Casual servers allow more action and humor.
  • Language and region: pick a server in your language and time zone so there are players online when you are.
  • Economy and jobs: some servers focus on crime, others on civilian life such as running businesses.

Start with a beginner-friendly public server to learn the controls and culture before applying to a whitelisted one.

Basic GTA RP rules and terms

  • Stay in character (IC): talk and act as your character, not as yourself.
  • OOC: out of character. Most servers allow OOC chat only in specific channels.
  • RDM: random deathmatch, killing without a roleplay reason. Almost always banned.
  • VDM: vehicle deathmatch, using a car as a weapon without reason.
  • Metagaming: using information your character could not know, such as something you saw on a stream.
  • Powergaming: forcing outcomes others cannot respond to, such as acting invincible.
  • Fear RP: valuing your character’s life; you should comply when someone points a gun at you.
  • New Life Rule: after your character dies, you forget the events that led to it.

Tips for your first GTA RP session

  1. Read the server rules fully; most bans come from new players who skipped them.
  2. Create a simple character with a name, job and one or two personality traits.
  3. Start with a legal job such as taxi driver, mechanic or fisherman to meet people.
  4. Use your microphone and introduce your character to others; roleplay is social.
  5. Be patient. Good stories take time, and rushing to crime usually ends badly.

Can you play GTA RP on PS5 or Xbox?

No. GTA RP frameworks like FiveM and RageMP only work with the PC version of GTA 5. Some console players try to recreate roleplay in GTA Online with friends in private lobbies, using in-game outfits and jobs, but without custom scripts it is much more limited. If you want the real experience, you need a PC. GTA Online itself is not crossplay, as explained in our GTA crossplay guide.

Will GTA 6 have roleplay servers?

Rockstar has not announced anything, but its purchase of Cfx.re suggests it values the roleplay community. Many fans expect official support for community servers in GTA 6 eventually, but GTA 6 launches on consoles first, and roleplay frameworks traditionally depend on the PC version.

GTA RP FAQ

Is GTA RP free?

FiveM is free, but you must own GTA 5 on PC.

Is FiveM safe?

Yes, when downloaded from fivem.net. Rockstar owns Cfx.re, the team behind it.

Can you get banned from GTA Online for using FiveM?

FiveM runs separately from GTA Online, so playing RP does not affect your GTA Online account when used normally.

What is the most popular GTA RP server?

NoPixel is the best known because of streamers, but many large servers exist in every region.

Popular GTA RP jobs and how they work

Police officer: most servers require an application and training for police roles. Officers patrol, respond to calls, chase suspects and process arrests, and they must follow procedures written by the server. It is one of the most demanding roles but also one of the most rewarding, because nearly every crime story involves the police.

EMS and doctors: paramedics revive injured players and treat them at the hospital. Good EMS roleplay makes the city feel alive and is a great way to meet many characters.

Mechanics: repair and tune vehicles, often running their own shops with employees and prices. Mechanics are central to the economy because cars break constantly.

Criminals: gangs, heist crews and independent criminals plan robberies, sell goods and fight rivals. Crime roleplay needs a strong story reason for violence and usually involves long negotiations with police during heists.

Civilians and businesses: taxi drivers, lawyers, restaurant owners, news reporters and real estate agents create everyday stories and often earn steady income.

Building a believable character

The best RP characters have a clear background, goals and flaws. Decide where your character came from, why they are in the city, what they want, and what they would never do. Give them a recognizable voice or way of speaking, but keep it comfortable for long sessions. Let your character grow from events rather than planning every detail. Players who enjoy GTA RP most usually play one or two characters for a long time and build relationships, rivalries and reputations that make every session feel connected.

Common reasons new players get banned

  • Shooting other players without a roleplay reason (RDM).
  • Breaking character to argue about rules in game instead of using the server’s Discord.
  • Using cheats, mod menus or exploits, which also risks your Rockstar account.
  • Ignoring fear RP, for example running from armed police while outnumbered.

If you are unsure whether something is allowed, ask in the server’s help channel before doing it.
