Is GTA cross platform? It is one of the most searched GTA questions, and the short answer surprises many players: GTA 5 and GTA Online do not support crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. This guide explains exactly who you can play with, what “cross-gen” means for GTA Online, whether GTA 6 will be crossplay or have an online mode, and whether you need PS Plus to play GTA Online.
Is GTA 5 crossplay?
No. GTA 5’s story mode is single-player, and GTA Online does not support crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Each platform family has its own servers:

So is GTA Online crossplay? No: a PS5 player cannot join an Xbox friend’s session, and PC players are separate from consoles. Is GTA 5 cross platform in any way? Only through character transfers within the same family: you can migrate your GTA Online character and progress from PS4 to PS5 and from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and from PC Legacy to PC Enhanced. You cannot transfer between PlayStation and Xbox. These rules apply to GTA V, GTA 5 Online and every edition, including Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced.
Why doesn’t GTA Online have crossplay?
Rockstar has never given a full explanation. Common reasons are the different anti-cheat situation on PC, where modding is widespread, the separate economies and player-made content on each platform, and the work required to merge years of character data. Rockstar did unify Red Dead Online and GTA Online with Rockstar Social Club accounts, but that has not led to crossplay.
Will GTA 6 be crossplay or cross platform?
Rockstar has not said. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026 as a single-player experience, so crossplay is not relevant at launch. Whether a future GTA 6 online mode will support crossplay between PS5 and Xbox is unknown. Most modern online games now offer it, so many players expect it, but Rockstar’s track record with GTA Online means it is not guaranteed. Is GTA 6 going to be crossplay? Will GTA 6 have online?
Almost certainly eventually, but not detailed yet. Rockstar has focused its marketing on the story of Lucia and Jason, and coverage of the price announcement described GTA 6 as a single-player experience at launch. GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013, and Red Dead Online launched a month after Red Dead Redemption 2, so a GTA 6 online mode after launch would follow the pattern. Is GTA 6 going to have online at launch? Rockstar has not confirmed it.
Do you need PS Plus to play GTA Online?
Yes. GTA Online is not free-to-play, so on PS5 you need at least PlayStation Plus Essential for online play, and on Xbox you need Game Pass Essential or higher. Story mode works without a subscription. On PC, GTA Online is free with the game. Rockstar’s optional GTA+ subscription adds monthly bonuses but does not replace PS Plus or Game Pass. How to play GTA Online with friends on other platforms
Because there is no crossplay, your options are limited:
- Get on the same platform. If most of your friends are on PS5, playing on PS5 is the only way to join their sessions.
- Use cross-platform voice chat. Discord voice works on Xbox and PS5, so you can talk while playing on separate servers, for example while comparing races or businesses. See Discord on Xbox and PS5.
- Play Red Dead Online or other Rockstar games? Red Dead Online also lacks crossplay, so the same limits apply.
How to transfer your GTA Online character
- Make sure your Rockstar Games Social Club account is linked to your PlayStation Network or Xbox account.
- Launch GTA Online on the new console (PS5 or Xbox Series X|S) with the same account.
- Choose the option to transfer your character from your previous-generation account when prompted. You can only do this once per account.
- Your character, money, properties and progress move to the new platform; the old console keeps a copy.
On PC, players moving from GTA V Legacy to GTA V Enhanced can migrate their character in a similar way.
Cross-progression vs crossplay
Crossplay means playing in the same session with people on other platforms. Cross-progression means your progress follows you across platforms. GTA Online has neither between PlayStation and Xbox; it only offers a one-time transfer within a console family. Games like Fortnite, Call of Duty and Minecraft have both, which is why many players assume GTA does too.

Crossplay vs playing together: the options that actually work
Because GTA Online has no crossplay, groups of friends on different platforms need a workaround. The most reliable is for everyone to move to the same console family: PS4 and PS5 players can play together only on the same generation after the 2024 change, so in practice the current choice is PS5 with PS5, Xbox Series X|S with Xbox Series X|S, or PC with PC. Your character can be transferred once from an old console version to a new one, so moving up a generation is easy. Moving between brands, such as from PS5 to Xbox, is not supported, so a new character would start from scratch.
If your group cannot agree on one platform, there are still ways to share the experience. You can watch each other on streaming platforms, play GTA RP servers on PC if everyone has a PC, or wait for GTA 6, where Rockstar may take a different approach to online play. Rockstar has not confirmed crossplay for GTA 6, so do not buy on a different platform from your friends on the assumption that it will be added.
Online subscriptions by platform
To play GTA Online on console you need the platform’s online subscription: PlayStation Plus Essential on PS5 and Game Pass Essential on Xbox Series X|S. PC players need no subscription.
