Minecraft is more fun with friends, and there are more ways to play together than most players realize. You can open a world to friends online, share a Realm that is always available, join a public or private server, play split-screen on one console, or connect over your home Wi-Fi. The right method depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition and which devices your friends use. This guide explains how to play Minecraft with friends on every platform, step by step, including how to add friends and whether Minecraft has voice chat.
Quick answer: ways to play with friends
| Method | Edition | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Friend worlds (online) | Bedrock | Friends on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC and mobile |
| Open to LAN | Java and Bedrock | Players on the same Wi-Fi network |
| Realms | Java and Bedrock | An always-online private world |
| Servers | Java and Bedrock | Larger groups, minigames, mods and plugins |
| Split-screen | Bedrock on consoles | Up to four players on one TV |
How to play Minecraft with friends on Bedrock
Step 1: Add friends
Sign in with a Microsoft account on every device. Open Minecraft, select Play, go to the Friends tab and choose Add Friend. Search for your friend’s gamertag and send a request. On Xbox you can also add friends from the Xbox app or console friends list. On PlayStation and Switch, you add Minecraft friends through the in-game Microsoft account system, not the console’s own friends list.
Step 2: Host a world
Create or open a world. In the world settings under Multiplayer, make sure Multiplayer Game is on and visibility is set to Friends of Friends or Friends Only. Load the world.
Step 3: Join
Your friends open the Friends tab and see your world listed under Joinable Friends. They select it and join. You can also send invites from the pause menu with Invite to Game. Up to eight players can join a friend world on most devices.
How to play multiplayer on Minecraft Java
Open to LAN
If your friends are on the same home network, load a single-player world, press Esc and choose Open to LAN. Set the game mode and whether cheats are allowed, then start. Your friends on the same Wi-Fi open Multiplayer, and your world appears in the list automatically.
Playing with friends online on Java
Java has no built-in online friends system for single-player worlds, so for friends outside your house you have three choices: host a server, rent a server, or use a Java Realm. A Realm is easiest: the owner subscribes, invites friends by name, and everyone joins from the Minecraft Realms button. Servers give you more control, plugins and mods; see how to make a Minecraft server. Some players use tools that tunnel LAN worlds over the internet, such as the Essential mod, which adds a friends system to Java.
Realms: the simplest always-online option
Realms are private servers hosted by Mojang. The world stays online even when the owner is not playing, so friends can drop in any time. Bedrock Realms support crossplay between consoles, PC and mobile; Java Realms are for Java players. Realms include backups, and the owner can reset or upload worlds. See Minecraft Realms prices.
Split-screen on consoles
On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, Bedrock Edition supports split-screen for up to four players on one TV. Connect extra controllers, open a world, and press the start or menu button on the second controller to join. Each player can sign in with their own account or play as a guest. Split-screen players can also join online worlds together. Java Edition has no split-screen.
Joining public servers
Public servers host minigames, survival communities and creative worlds for hundreds of players. On Bedrock, the Servers tab lists featured servers such as The Hive, Cubecraft, Lifeboat and Galaxite, which work on every platform. On Windows, mobile and Xbox you can also add any Bedrock server by IP. On Java, open Multiplayer, click Add Server, and type the server address. Always read a server’s rules, and be careful about sharing personal information.
Do you need to pay to play online?
- Xbox: Game Pass Essential is needed for online multiplayer, but local split-screen is free.
- PlayStation: PlayStation Plus Essential is needed for online play.
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo Switch Online is needed.
- PC and mobile: no subscription needed.
- Realms: only the owner pays; invited friends join for free.
Does Minecraft have voice chat?
Minecraft does not have built-in voice chat in Java or Bedrock worlds. Most players use platform party chat instead: Xbox party chat, PlayStation party chat, Nintendo’s app, or Discord on PC, mobile and consoles. Some Java servers use the Simple Voice Chat mod, which adds proximity voice chat so you hear players who are near you in game. On Bedrock, some featured servers have their own voice features through partner apps. For console players, see Discord on Xbox and PlayStation.
Common multiplayer problems
- Friends cannot see my world: check that Multiplayer Game is enabled and visibility is set correctly, and that everyone is on the same version.
- Cannot add friends on PlayStation or Switch: sign in with a Microsoft account and allow cross-network play in Xbox privacy settings.
- Java friends cannot join LAN: they must be on the same network, and firewalls may block Java; allow Java through Windows Firewall.
- Child accounts cannot join: a parent must allow multiplayer in Xbox Family Settings.
- Lag: the host’s internet upload speed limits friend worlds; use a Realm or server for smoother play.
Tips for a great multiplayer world
- Agree on rules before starting, such as no stealing from chests and how to share resources.
- Build a shared storage room and a central meeting point.
- Back up the world regularly, especially before big changes.
- Use permissions to stop new or younger players from breaking things, such as Visitor or Member roles on Bedrock.
- Pick a project together, like defeating the Ender Dragon, to keep the group focused.

On Bedrock, add friends and join their world from the Friends tab. On Java, use Open to LAN, a Realm or a server.
How do you add friends on Minecraft?
On Bedrock, go to Play, Friends, Add Friend and search their gamertag.
How many players can join a Minecraft world?
Friend worlds on Bedrock support up to 8 players, Realms up to 10 (or 11 including the owner), and servers can host many more.
Does Minecraft have voice chat?
No built-in voice chat. Use party chat, Discord or a voice chat mod.
Can Java and Bedrock friends play together?
Only on special servers using GeyserMC. See Minecraft crossplay.
Playing with friends on different devices
Bedrock Edition is the crossplay version, so a friend on an iPhone can join a world hosted on an Xbox, and a Switch player can join a PC Realm. Everyone just needs the same game version, which means updating Minecraft on every device before you start a session. Java Edition players on Windows, macOS and Linux can all play together, but they cannot join Bedrock worlds without a GeyserMC server. If your group is mixed, Bedrock is usually the easier choice, and PC players can own both editions through the Java and Bedrock bundle.
Permissions and roles for friends
On Bedrock, the host can set each player to Visitor, Member or Operator. Visitors can look around but cannot build or break blocks, which is ideal when showing your world to someone new. Members play normally, and Operators can use commands if cheats are on and change other players permissions. On Java servers, use the op command and whitelist to control who can join and who can use commands. Turning on the whitelist on any server is the simplest way to keep strangers out of a world meant only for friends.
