Every campaign reward at a glance

Modern Warfare 4 gives one reward for each of its 16 campaign missions. The rewards fall into four groups: base operators, XP tokens, cosmetics such as a calling card, emblem and loading screen, and achievements. Two guides list the same set of rewards, with small spelling differences in names, so the table below follows the common spelling.

  • Mission 1, Mayhem: Cho operator
  • Mission 2, Out in the Cold: No More Rules calling card
  • Mission 3, Following Orders: Double XP token
  • Mission 4, Hired Gun: Dallas operator
  • Mission 5, Losing Ground: loading screen
  • Mission 6, Traffic: Luca operator
  • Mission 7, Gone Dark: Gone Dark emblem
  • Mission 8, Assassins: Oh-ji operator
  • Mission 9, Survivors: Double XP token
  • Mission 10, Stranded: Kal operator
  • Mission 11, Defection: Double Weapon XP token
  • Mission 12, Counter Attack: Dunn operator
  • Mission 13, Escape: Double Weapon XP token
  • Mission 14, Entrenched: West operator
  • Mission 15, Decapitation: Double XP token
  • Mission 16, Greater Good: Park operator

The eight base operators

Half of the rewards are operators you can use in multiplayer: Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park. Each comes from a specific mission, so you need to finish that mission to unlock the operator. Park is the final reward, from Greater Good, which means you must complete the whole campaign to unlock the main character as an operator. Cho, the first reward, is easy to get because it comes from the opening mission, Mayhem, which takes only a short time to finish.

Operators are cosmetic. They change how your character looks in multiplayer modes but do not change your stats. If you like a particular character from the story, the campaign is the clearest route to using that character in other modes.

XP tokens

Five missions give an XP token. Following Orders, Survivors and Decapitation each give a Double XP token. Defection and Escape each give a Double Weapon XP token. These tokens speed up your progression for a limited time, so use them when you plan a long session. Because the Double Weapon XP tokens affect weapon levels, save them for a gun you want to level quickly, not for a quick match.

Calling card, emblem and loading screen

Out in the Cold gives the No More Rules calling card, Gone Dark gives the Gone Dark emblem, and Losing Ground gives a loading screen. These are profile cosmetics. They let you show off campaign progress in multiplayer, and they are the quickest way to signal that you played the story.

What you do to earn each reward

The rewards come from finishing missions, so it helps to know what each mission asks of you. This list avoids major plot spoilers.

  • Mayhem: survive the opening night in Hajin City and collapse the invasion tunnel. A short mission, and the quickest operator in the game.
  • Out in the Cold: a stealthy Price mission in New York where the Safety’s On achievement asks you to clear a kitchen without firing on Hardened or higher.
  • Following Orders: a mission set in a North Korean village that ends with a choice, and it carries two achievements and some hidden collectibles.
  • Hired Gun: a fight across a rail yard and train cars, with an achievement for killing 50 enemies on trains.
  • Losing Ground: a fighting retreat in Hajin City, with mortar kills tied to an achievement.
  • Traffic: a chase through Paris where harming civilians restarts the checkpoint and C4 is used to flip a truck.
  • Gone Dark: a Mumbai mission where Price and Gaz are on opposite sides of a fight.
  • Assassins: played as Ri Seung Ho, set the day before the invasion, with achievements for a one-kill run and a second-run revenge.
  • Survivors: Park’s squad drops into North Korea near Rajin and meets a defector who marks three targets.
  • Stranded: a snowbound open-world mission where you attack three sabotage targets in any order and can chase four achievements.
  • Defection: at Air Base 3, with control swapping between Park, Jae and Dunn.
  • Counter Attack: an amphibious push to City Hall in which you mark targets for an armored battalion.
  • Escape: a prison break by Price, tied to the Never Forgotten achievement.
  • Entrenched: a trench assault at a reactor complex that uses Thermite charges on an armored vehicle and an emergency valve.
  • Decapitation: a palace and underground facility mission that fails on friendly fire.
  • Greater Good: the finale, played as Price, with the Hold the Line achievement for finishing the campaign.

Do you need to play on a hard difficulty?

No. Completion rewards are given for finishing the mission on any difficulty. Achievements are different: some require Hardened or harder, others require Veteran or harder. Difficulty options are Recruit, Regular, Hardened, Veteran, Realism and YOLO. Realism unlocks after the campaign, and YOLO unlocks after you finish on Realism.

Campaign achievements and trophies

Guides count 18 campaign achievements. Notable ones include Skeet Shooting in Mayhem (shoot 10 paratroopers before they land), Safety’s On and Can’t Touch This in Out in the Cold, Bullet Train in Hired Gun (kill 50 enemies on train cars), Raining Thunder in Losing Ground (mortar kills), Pacifist and Revenge in Assassins, four achievements in Stranded, Long Shot in Counter Attack, Never Forgotten in Escape and Trench Broom in Entrenched. Hold the Line is for finishing on any difficulty and Was it worth it? is for finishing on Realism.

The best order to earn rewards

  1. Play the campaign once from start to finish on Regular or Hardened to unlock all operators and tokens.
  2. Decide whether you want the achievements. If you do, replay specific missions on the required difficulty.
  3. Save your XP tokens for the first day you plan a long multiplayer session.
  4. Equip your campaign operators, emblem, calling card and loading screen in the loadout menu.

Are the rewards worth it?

For most players, yes. The campaign is single-player and the rewards come with no extra cost. The tokens give a real boost to progression, and the operators are a good way to show which missions you completed. If you only play multiplayer for the gameplay, you can skip the campaign without losing any power, but you will not get the free cosmetics.

Because all of these rewards unlock from a single pass through the campaign, there is no reason to farm them separately.

Quick recap

  • 16 missions give 16 rewards.
  • Eight rewards are operators, five are XP tokens and three are cosmetics.
  • Park is unlocked by finishing Greater Good.
  • Rewards unlock on any difficulty.
  • Achievements are separate and some need Hardened or Veteran.
