Is Dota 2 free?
Yes. Dota 2 is completely free on Steam and every hero is unlocked. Money is only spent on cosmetics and the optional Dota Plus subscription.
What is the best Dota 2 hero for beginners?
Simple heroes with clear abilities are easiest to learn, such as Sniper, Crystal Maiden, Lion, Juggernaut and Axe. Valve also recommends starting heroes in the hero picker.
What is The International?
The International (TI) is Valve's yearly Dota 2 world championship and one of the biggest tournaments in esports.
Can I play Dota 2 on console or mobile?
No. Dota 2 is available on PC only (Windows, macOS and Linux) through Steam.
Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) from Valve, released on July 9, 2013. Two teams of five, the Radiant and the Dire, each pick a hero and fight across three lanes to destroy the other team’s Ancient. Every hero is free, and the game earns money from cosmetic items only.
Dota 2 is one of the most played games on Steam and home to The International, one of the biggest tournaments in esports, which has paid out some of the largest prize pools in gaming history.
Basics
- Heroes have a primary attribute (Strength, Agility, Intelligence or Universal) and four or more abilities, including an ultimate.
- You earn gold and experience by last-hitting creeps, killing heroes and destroying buildings, and spend gold on items.
- Positions 1 to 5 describe roles, from the farm-heavy carry to the hard support.
