How do cheat codes work on PC, PlayStation and Xbox?
Cheat codes are shortcuts that developers build into single-player games, and the way you enter them depends on the platform. On console you usually enter a button sequence or use an in-game phone menu. On PC you often type into an in-game console or phone. The same cheat can need different input on each platform, which is why the Grand Theft Auto V hub has a cheat finder where you can switch between PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
Rockstar’s own support page for Grand Theft Auto V is a good example of what to expect from any cheat system. It says saving is still allowed while cheats are active, but achievements are temporarily disabled. Entering the same cheat code twice usually, but not always, turns it off. Some cheats are unavailable during certain parts of the game, and reloading a save or restarting the console resets all cheats. Other games vary, but the same questions are worth asking before you start: will it block achievements, can I switch it off, and does it reset on reload?
Which tools and calculators are available?
- Download time calculators: one for each of the ten games. The maths is simple: file size divided by connection speed. Remember that connection speeds are quoted in megabits per second while game sizes are in gigabytes, so divide the speed by eight to get megabytes per second. A 100 GB game over a 100 Mbps connection takes about two hours and 13 minutes at best.
- Sensitivity converters and calculators: for Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends and Call of Duty. The same sensitivity number turns the camera at different speeds in different games, so a converter helps you keep the same feel when you switch.
- Grand Theft Auto V tools: a cheat code finder, a cheat list builder and a game time converter.
Browse every calculator from the tools page.
How should you use cheats and settings safely?
Use cheats only in single-player or offline modes. Keep a separate save for cheat sessions if you care about achievements or trophies. Do not use cheat software in online competitive games, because that is against the rules of almost every game and can get an account banned. If a website asks for your password or payment details to unlock a cheat or a download, leave it.
Which game should you start with?
- Competitive team games: Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 are PC games with deep strategy and large communities.
- Battle royale and extraction shooters: PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, Apex Legends and ARC Raiders.
- Hero shooters: Marvel Rivals.
- Survival: Rust.
- Story and open world: Grand Theft Auto V and Cyberpunk 2077.
- Series with yearly entries: Call of Duty.
Each hub opens with an overview and then splits into a wiki, guides and tools, so you can go as deep as you want.
What can you find in each game hub?
Every hub opens with an overview that links to the sections below it. The Wiki tab holds entries for weapons, maps, characters, items or vehicles, depending on the game, and each entry has its own page with stats and details. The Guides tab holds step-by-step advice, from beginner tips to economy and loadout guides. The Tools tab holds the calculators described above. The Updates tab records patches where we track them, and the FAQ tab answers the short questions players ask most often. A tab only appears when there is something behind it, so you never land on an empty page.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find cheat codes for PC and console games?
Open the game’s hub and check its Codes tab. The Grand Theft Auto V hub has a cheat finder with separate inputs for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
Do cheat codes disable achievements?
It depends on the game. In Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar says achievements are temporarily disabled while cheats are active, although saving still works. Check each game’s own rules before you start.
Can I use cheat codes online?
Cheat codes are designed for single-player play. Using cheat software in online competitive games can get your account banned, so keep cheats for offline modes.
How long will a game take to download?
Divide the file size by your speed in megabytes per second, which is your megabit speed divided by eight. A 100 GB game on a 100 Mbps connection takes about two hours and 13 minutes at best. The download time calculators on each hub do this for you.
What is the best PC or console game to start with?
Pick by style. Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 suit competitive players, PUBG and Apex Legends suit battle royale fans, and Grand Theft Auto V and Cyberpunk 2077 suit story-driven open-world play. The ranked list on this page shows what is most popular right now.
Are these games on both PC and console?
Several are, but not all. Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 are PC games, while others such as Grand Theft Auto V are on PC and console. Each hub lists the platforms for that game.
What is sensitivity conversion?
It converts your mouse sensitivity from one game to another so the camera turns at the same speed. The calculators for Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends and Call of Duty help you keep the same aim feel across games.
