Pale oak is the grey-white wood of the Pale Garden, one of the strangest biomes in Minecraft. The trees are twisted and dark, covered in pale moss, and some of them hide a Creaking Heart. The wood itself is useful too: it gives a soft, ashen palette that does not exist in any other tree. This guide explains where to find pale oak in Minecraft, how to get a pale oak sapling, how to plant and grow it, and what you can build with it.
Quick answer
- Where to find it: in the Pale Garden biome, a rare overworld forest.
- How to get a sapling: break pale oak leaves, or buy one from a wandering trader for emeralds.
- How to grow it: plant four saplings in a 2×2 square, give them light and space, and use bone meal.
Where to find pale oak in Minecraft
Pale oak trees generate in the Pale Garden, a dark, foggy woodland biome in the overworld. It is a rare biome, so you may have to explore a long way. In a world with cheats, use /locate biome minecraft:pale_garden; see how to use /locate. The ground is covered in pale moss, the leaves are grey, and thick white fog hangs between the trunks. You will also see closed and open eyeblossoms in the garden.
Pale oak is a dark-oak style tree with a thick, 2 by 2 trunk and a wide, flat canopy. Some of these trees have a Creaking Heart hidden in the trunk. At night, the heart can wake up a Creaking, a mob that only moves when you are not looking at it. If you only want the wood, go in during the day and bring torches.
How to get a pale oak sapling
- Break pale oak leaves. Like other leaves, they sometimes drop a sapling when broken or when they decay. Use shears on the leaves to keep them, and your hand or an axe to knock off saplings quickly.
- Trade with a wandering trader. They sell a pale oak sapling for emeralds, so it is a good way to get one without visiting the biome.
- Pick up a sapling that drops from a felled tree. Saplings fall as items when leaves decay after you chop the trunk.
Because pale oak needs four saplings to grow, collect at least four before you leave.
How to plant and grow a pale oak tree
- Find flat ground with dirt, grass, podzol, moss or farmland.
- Place four saplings in a 2×2 square. A lone sapling will not grow a tree.
- Make sure there is light level 9 or higher above the saplings and plenty of free height with empty space around, so the canopy can spread.
- Use bone meal on one of the saplings. It may take several tries.
- Wait for the tree to grow. Without bone meal, it can take some time.
A tree you plant yourself has no Creaking Heart. The heart only generates in trees that were created by the world generator in the Pale Garden.
Where to plant your pale oaks
- Outside, in a flat, open area with grass.
- On top of moss blocks to match the look of the biome. Bone meal on moss grows more moss.
- In a large indoor garden lit by lanterns, giving you pale oak wood without leaving home.
What pale oak wood is used for
Pale oak gives you the full wood set: logs, wood, stripped logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, fence gates, doors, trapdoors, buttons, pressure plates, signs, hanging signs and boats. It crafts exactly like any other wood. See how to make a door, how to make a fence and how to make a boat. Pale oak logs are also one of the ingredients for a Creaking Heart; see how to get resin.
Building with pale oak
Pale oak is almost white-grey, which makes it a great fit for builds that need a cold, quiet look. Try it with:
- White and grey concrete for modern houses. See how to make concrete.
- Deepslate and blackstone for gothic towers and haunted houses.
- Quartz and smooth stone for clean, bright interiors.
- Pale moss and moss carpet for ruins and garden walls.

Pale oak vs dark oak
| Feature | Pale oak | Dark oak |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Light grey-white | Dark brown |
| Found in | Pale Garden | Dark forests |
| Grows from | 4 saplings in 2×2 | 4 saplings in 2×2 |
| Special feature | Can hide a Creaking Heart | Large canopy, mushrooms around the base |
Staying safe in the Pale Garden
- The Creaking only moves when you are not looking at it. If you look at it, it stops.
- It spawns near a Creaking Heart at night, so go in at daytime if you do not want a fight.
- Use torches or lanterns to find your way through the fog.
- Bring a good sword, a shield, food and a bed to set your spawn. See how to make a bed and how to make a shield.
Common problems
- The sapling does not grow into a tree: you need four saplings in a 2 by 2 square.
- It stays a sapling: the light level is too low or something blocks the space above.
- No Creaking Heart in my tree: planted trees never get one.
- Cannot find the biome: it is rare. Explore dark forests and use a locate command if cheats are on.
How to build a pale oak grove at home
If you want pale oak without living in the fog, plan a small grove. Pick a flat patch of grass near your base, lay down a 2 by 2 square of moss blocks or dirt for each tree, and leave a gap of at least three blocks between squares so the canopies do not collide. Plant four saplings in each square, bone meal them one at a time, and clear any stray leaves that block the light. Once the trees are tall you can chop the logs, replant with the saplings that drop, and keep the grove going for as long as you like. A fence around the edge keeps mobs out and gives the grove a neat, finished look.
Pale moss and eyeblossoms
The Pale Garden is covered in pale moss, a block that spreads with bone meal and makes the ground look soft and grey. Pale hanging moss grows from the underside of the leaves. Eyeblossoms are flowers that open at night and close in the day. You can use them in builds, and they are a good way to make a garden feel strange and alive. Bring shears if you want to collect moss carpets and hanging moss without breaking them into nothing.
Wandering trader saplings
If your world has a wandering trader, check their offers for a pale oak sapling. Because the trader arrives at random and stays only a short time, buy any saplings you need right away and keep a few emeralds in your inventory for this reason. You can get emeralds by trading with villagers or by mining them in mountain biomes.
