The Warden is the most powerful mob in Minecraft. It lives deep underground in the deep dark biome, it is completely blind, and it finds you by sensing vibrations and smell. With huge health and attacks that can kill a fully armored player in a few hits, the Warden is designed to be avoided rather than fought. This wiki page covers Warden stats, how it is summoned, how it detects you, its attacks, how to sneak past it, whether you should fight it, and what treasure it guards in ancient cities in Java and Bedrock Edition.

How the Warden spawns
Wardens do not spawn naturally like other mobs. They are summoned by sculk shriekers in the deep dark. When you trigger a nearby sculk sensor, it can activate a shrieker. Each activation by a player adds a warning: you see the Darkness effect and hear a distant sound. After the fourth warning, a Warden digs out of the ground near you. Warnings slowly wear off over time if you stop making noise, so pausing to let things calm down is a valid tactic.
The deep dark is found at very low Y levels, usually below Y 0 under mountains, which is the same depth where many players hunt for diamonds. You know you are in it when you see dark blue sculk spreading over the stone. See how to find diamonds for diamond levels.
How the Warden detects you
- Vibrations: walking, jumping, mining, placing blocks, opening chests, eating, landing, and projectiles hitting blocks all create vibrations the Warden can sense.
- Smell: when the Warden is near you, it sniffs and can locate players and mobs even if they are still.
- Anger: each detection raises its anger at that target. When anger is high enough, it charges and attacks.
Sneaking does not create walking vibrations, and wool blocks and carpets absorb vibrations, so a careful player can move through the deep dark quietly.
How the Warden attacks
- Melee: its punches deal enormous damage and also disable shields for a few seconds. A player in full diamond armor can die in two or three hits.
- Sonic boom: if it cannot reach you, for example because you pillared up or are behind a gap, it fires a sonic boom that travels through blocks, ignores armor and shields, and hits hard. Hiding does not protect you from this attack.
- Darkness: nearby players get the Darkness effect, which makes the screen pulse dark and reduces visibility.
- Digging away: if the Warden goes about a minute without detecting anything, it digs back into the ground and disappears.
How to avoid the Warden
- Sneak the whole time you are in the deep dark.
- Avoid sculk sensors and shriekers, or break sensors carefully with a hoe, which mines sculk fastest. Breaking blocks makes vibrations, so do it from a distance where possible.
- Place wool on the floor to muffle your steps and around sensors.
- Distract it by throwing snowballs, eggs or arrows at a far wall. The impact vibration pulls the Warden away from you.
- Stay still if it is right next to you, then sneak away once it moves off.
- Leave if things go wrong. Pillar up, ender pearl away or dig up and seal the hole behind you.
Should you fight the Warden?
Usually, no. The Warden drops only a sculk catalyst and 5 experience, far less than the effort and risk. It is meant to be a force of nature that pushes you to sneak and plan. If you must fight, the safest approach is from range with a bow while standing out of melee reach, though the sonic boom still hits. Some players use TNT or iron golems as distractions. In Hardcore, avoiding it entirely is strongly recommended.
Ancient cities: what the Warden guards
The deep dark contains ancient cities, huge underground ruins full of sculk, shriekers and loot chests. The treasure is the reason to risk the Warden:
- Swift Sneak enchanted books, which make you move faster while sneaking and are found only here.
- Echo shards, used to craft the recovery compass, which points to where you last died.
- Disc fragments to craft the music disc 5, plus rare music discs.
- Enchanted golden apples, enchanted diamond leggings and diamond horse armor.
- Ward and Silence armor trim templates; Silence is one of the rarest items in the game.
Loot chests here open without much noise, but walking to them is the risky part. Plan a route, carry wool and snowballs, and keep an eye on the shrieker warnings.
Darkness effect
Darkness from the Warden or a shrieker makes your view pulse to black and limits how far you can see. It is not damaging on its own, but it makes the deep dark much harder to navigate. Night vision potions help a little, but the pulsing still happens. Milk removes the effect.
Java vs Bedrock differences
The Warden behaves the same in both editions: 500 health, the same damage values, sonic boom, smell and vibration detection. Small differences exist in how vibrations from specific actions are counted.
Warden FAQ

Can the Warden see?
No. It is blind and uses vibrations and smell.
What does the Warden drop?
One sculk catalyst and 5 experience.
How do you avoid the Warden?
Sneak, avoid sculk sensors, place wool and distract it with thrown items.
Exploring the deep dark safely: a checklist
- Bring a stack of wool or carpet to place over sensors and under your feet in key spots.
- Carry snowballs or arrows for distractions.
- Keep a water bucket and blocks for quick escapes upward.
- Set your spawn nearby with a bed, so a death does not cost a long trip.
- Bring an ender chest to store loot as you go, so you lose less if the Warden catches you.
- Wear armor with Swift Sneak once you have it, which makes sneaking almost as fast as walking.
- Do not sprint, jump or fight other mobs carelessly; every action makes noise.
The Warden and sculk blocks
The sculk catalyst the Warden drops spreads sculk when mobs die near it, and it drops experience when mined with Silk Touch. Builders use catalysts and sculk blocks for spooky decorations and XP storage, since breaking sculk without Silk Touch gives experience. Sculk sensors are useful redstone components: they detect vibrations, output a signal based on the type of vibration, and power doors, alarms and hidden switches in your base.
Why the Warden exists
Mojang designed the Warden as a creature to avoid rather than a boss to beat. Its huge health, armor-piercing sonic boom and poor drops all push players toward stealth, which makes the deep dark feel tense and different from the rest of the game. Treat every trip into an ancient city as a stealth mission and the Warden rarely becomes a problem.
If you see the shrieker warning count rising, stop moving for a while; warnings fade over time, which resets the danger.
