Frequently asked questions about Rust

Is Rust on Xbox?

Yes, as Rust Console Edition on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One since May 21, 2021.

Can Xbox Rust players play with PC players?

No. Rust Console Edition has crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation only.

When does Rust wipe?

Official Rust servers force wipe on the first Thursday of every month, when Facepunch releases its monthly update. Many community servers also wipe weekly or every two weeks.

Is Rust free?

No. Rust is a paid game on Steam. Rust Console Edition is also paid on PlayStation and Xbox.

Do Rust PC and console players play together?

No. Rust Console Edition has its own servers and does not cross-play with PC.

How do I protect my base from decay?

Fill your Tool Cupboard with the materials your base is built from (wood, stone, metal fragments and high-quality metal). The cupboard pays the upkeep and stops your base decaying.

Rust is a multiplayer survival game from Facepunch Studios. You wake up on a beach with a rock and a torch and have to gather wood, stone and metal, build a base, craft weapons and survive the other players on your server, who can raid your base and take everything. It entered early access on December 11, 2013 and fully released on February 8, 2018. Rust Console Edition, developed by Double Eleven, arrived on PlayStation and Xbox in 2021.

Most official servers wipe (reset) on the first Thursday of every month when Facepunch ships its monthly update, so everyone regularly starts again on equal terms.

Core loop

  • Gather resources and claim land with a Tool Cupboard.
  • Learn blueprints at a workbench or from the Research Table to craft better gear.
  • Build up from twig to stone, metal and armoured walls to resist raids.
  • Run monuments like Launch Site and Oil Rig for high-tier loot.

Rust on Xbox: Rust Console Edition

Rust on Xbox is called Rust Console Edition. It was developed by Double Eleven with Facepunch and released on May 21, 2021 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with native Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions following. It plays on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One. The core game is the same as on PC: gather, build, craft, raid and survive. But it is a separate version with its own update schedule and servers, and it is usually a few months behind the PC game in new content.

Does Rust on Xbox have crossplay?

Rust Console Edition supports crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation, so Xbox and PS5 players share the same servers. There is no crossplay with the PC version. If your friends play Rust on Steam, you cannot join their servers from an Xbox.

How much is Rust on Xbox?

Rust Console Edition is a paid game on the Xbox store, regularly discounted during sales, and you need Xbox Game Pass Essential to play online because the game is online-only. It has been included with Game Pass in the past at times, so check the store page for current availability.

Differences from the PC version

  • Separate official servers, with console-specific community servers.
  • A controller-friendly crafting and building interface with radial menus.
  • Content updates arrive later than on PC.
  • No modded servers or plugins like the PC community has.
  • Server population caps and map sizes are tuned for console performance.

Rust on Xbox Series X vs Xbox One

On Xbox Series X|S the game runs at higher resolution and with a steadier frame rate, and it loads much faster. Busy areas such as large bases and monuments can still drop frames on the older Xbox One, so a Series console is recommended for a smoother experience. Your progress is tied to the server rather than the console, so moving from Xbox One to Series X is easy.

Beginner tips for Rust

Your first goal is a small, secure base. Gather wood and stone, craft a building plan and hammer, and build a one-room base with a door, a lock and a Tool Cupboard to stop others building nearby. Upgrade walls from twig to wood, then stone, as soon as possible. Keep a sleeping bag or bed inside so you can respawn close to your loot. Store valuables in several boxes rather than one, and avoid building near monuments or roads where raiders pass constantly. Our Rust beginner guide and raiding basics go further.

Wipes on console

Like PC, console servers wipe on a schedule, usually monthly with official updates. When a server wipes, the map resets and everyone starts again with nothing, which keeps the game fair for new players and gives veterans a fresh start. Blueprint wipes, which reset what you have learned, happen less often.

Monuments worth running

Monuments are the pre-built ruins scattered across every Rust map, and they hold the best loot. Small monuments such as gas stations and supermarkets are safe-ish places for fresh players to find scrap and components. Medium monuments such as the Water Treatment Plant, the Trainyard and the Airfield need a keycard puzzle and some gear. Large monuments such as Launch Site, the Military Tunnels and the Oil Rigs are guarded by scientists and heavy NPCs, and other players camp them for their high-tier rewards. Bring a team, a medical kit and armor before attempting them, and learn the keycard routes so you spend as little time exposed as possible.

The Rust economy: scrap, research and workbenches

Scrap is Rust’s main currency. You get it from barrels, crates and recycling components at monuments. Use it at the Research Table to learn blueprints from items you find, or at the workbench to unlock items through the tech tree. There are three workbench levels, and each unlocks stronger weapons, armor and building parts. Outpost and Bandit Camp are safe zones where you can trade with vending machines and other players without being shot, which makes them useful for selling excess resources and buying the parts you are missing.

Playing solo vs in a group

Rust is harder alone, because groups can gather faster, defend bases around the clock and out-gun solo players. If you play solo, choose servers marked solo or duo, build smaller hidden bases, and avoid showing off loot. Groups should split roles: one player farms, one builds, one handles defense and raids. Communication matters, so use voice chat or Discord; see Discord on Xbox and PlayStation.

Is Rust worth it in 2026?

Rust remains one of the most intense survival games because everything you own can be taken. That makes it stressful, but also exciting and social. If you enjoy long sessions, building and player-driven stories, it is worth it on PC or console. If you prefer progress that cannot be lost, look at co-op survival games instead, such as Valheim or Sons of the Forest.

Rust controls on Xbox

The console edition maps Rust to a controller with radial menus. Hold the inventory button to open quick crafting, use the D-pad to cycle the hotbar, and hold the building plan button to bring up the building wheel. Aim assist is mild and only helps against other players at close range. Many players lower the look sensitivity for long-range fights and assign the most-used crafting items, such as bandages and ammunition, to favorites so they can be crafted quickly. If the controller starts to drift, raise the deadzone a little or see how to fix stick drift, because drift is a real problem in a game where every shot counts.
