How the minecraft tellraw generator works

Type your message in up to three parts and give each part its own color and style. The preview shows how it will look in chat. In Java mode you can also make text clickable to open a link, run a command, suggest a command or copy text, and add a hover tooltip.

Choose your Java version before you copy. Java 1.21.5 changed the names to click_event and hover_event, and older versions use clickEvent and hoverEvent.

Worked example

A gold [Server] tag followed by white text, sent to everyone, becomes a /tellraw @a command with a list of two text parts, each with its own color. To add a link, choose Open a web link and paste an address that starts with https://.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition

Bedrock does not use JSON colors. Bedrock /tellraw uses a rawtext block, and colors and styles are written with section sign codes such as §6 for gold. Bedrock chat has no click or hover events, no underline and no strikethrough, so those options are hidden in Bedrock mode.

What is the difference between /say and /tellraw?

/say prints a plain message with the sender name in front. /tellraw prints exactly what you write, with colors, styles and click events, to the players you choose.

Why does my tellraw show an error?

The usual causes are a missing quote or comma, or a Java version that does not match yours. Pick your version in the tool and paste the result without editing it.

Can I use tellraw in a command block?

Yes, and it is a good way to show a message when a player steps on a trigger. Use a selector such as @a or @p as the target.

How do I make a clickable link?

In Java mode, choose Open a web link, paste a full address that starts with https:// and add a hover tip if you like. Players click the text in chat to open it.
