Creeper

The green mob that sneaks up and explodes. Drops gunpowder.

TypeMob

Data checked Oct 28, 2026

The creeper is the most famous mob in Minecraft and the unofficial mascot of the game. It is a silent, green, four-legged hostile mob that walks up to players and explodes, destroying blocks and dealing heavy damage. Creepers have been in the game since 2009 and are still one of the main dangers in survival, especially for new players. This wiki page covers creeper stats, how and where creepers spawn, how they attack, what they drop, charged creepers, how to defend against them and how to farm them for gunpowder in Java and Bedrock Edition.

Where creepers spawn

Creepers spawn in the Overworld in darkness, at a block light level of 0, on most solid blocks. That means they appear on the surface at night, in caves at any time, and in dark corners of buildings that are not lit. They spawn in almost every Overworld biome except mushroom fields and the deep dark, and they never spawn naturally in the Nether or the End. Unlike zombies and skeletons, creepers do not burn in sunlight, so creepers that spawned at night are still wandering around during the day. That is why many players meet their first creeper in broad daylight, right outside their house.

Creepers can also be summoned with a spawn egg in Creative or with the /summon command, and there is a rare natural creeper variant created by lightning: the charged creeper.

How creepers attack

A creeper detects players from about 16 blocks away and walks toward them silently. When it gets within about 3 blocks, it starts to hiss and swell, flashing white. After roughly 1.5 seconds it explodes. If you move more than about 7 blocks away during the fuse, the creeper stops swelling and resets, which is the classic way to escape. Creepers do not make any noise while walking, so the hiss is often the first warning you get.

The explosion damages every entity nearby, with damage falling off with distance and armor. On Normal and Hard difficulty, a point-blank creeper explosion can take most or all of an unarmored player’s health. It also destroys blocks in a radius, leaving the familiar crater in walls, floors and gardens.

What creepers drop

  • Gunpowder: 0 to 2 when killed, more with Looting. Gunpowder is used for TNT, firework rockets, splash potions and fire charges.
  • Music discs: if a skeleton, stray or bogged kills a creeper with an arrow, the creeper drops a random music disc from the original set. This is the main way to collect many of the discs.
  • Creeper head: if a charged creeper explosion kills another creeper, that creeper drops its head. Charged creepers kill other mobs too and make zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons and piglins drop their heads.

Creepers that explode drop nothing, so kill them before they finish their fuse if you want the gunpowder.

Charged creepers

When lightning strikes within a few blocks of a creeper, it becomes a charged creeper with a blue glowing aura. A charged creeper has the same health but its explosion is twice as powerful, enough to destroy far larger areas and kill a fully armored player more easily. Natural charged creepers are rare because they need a thunderstorm and a nearby strike. You can create them on purpose with a trident enchanted with Channeling during a thunderstorm, or with a lightning rod placed near a creeper. Players use charged creepers to collect mob heads for decoration and banners.

How to defend against creepers

  • Light up your base. Creepers need complete darkness to spawn, so torches and lanterns around your build stop them appearing nearby. See how to make lanterns.
  • Keep cats. Creepers are afraid of cats and ocelots and flee from them, staying several blocks away. Tamed cats around your base are excellent protection; see how to tame a cat.
  • Use a shield. Raising a shield toward a creeper as it explodes blocks most of the damage.
  • Hit and back off. Strike the creeper, which knocks it back and resets the fuse, then attack again. A sprinting hit or a Knockback sword works best.
  • Use a bow. Shooting creepers from range is the safest approach.
  • Build with blast-resistant blocks. Obsidian, deepslate tiles and stone bricks survive explosions better than dirt and wood.
  • Turn off mob griefing. In private worlds, /gamerule mobGriefing false stops creeper explosions from breaking blocks, though they still deal damage. It also affects endermen, villagers and other mobs, so use it with care.

Creeper farms

Gunpowder is in high demand once you have an elytra, because firework rockets need it to fly. A creeper farm uses the fact that creepers spawn in dark spaces. Most designs build a large dark platform high in the sky, far from the ground so other mobs do not spawn nearby, and use trapdoors or water streams to make creepers fall into a killing chamber. Placing cats near the collection area keeps creepers from exploding. In Java Edition, creepers spawn more often when fewer other mobs can spawn, so players often light up nearby caves first. A good farm can produce several stacks of gunpowder per hour.

Creeper behavior quirks

  • Creepers ignite instantly if you use flint and steel on them in Java Edition, which can be used in traps.
  • Creepers that are on fire still explode normally; fire does not detonate them.
  • Creepers can climb ladders and vines when chasing you.
  • Creepers flee from cats and ocelots but ignore other passive mobs.
  • Creepers do not attack villagers or other mobs; they only target players.
  • Creeper explosions can destroy item frames, armor stands and dropped items, so keep valuables away from them.

History of the creeper

The creeper famously started as a coding mistake. When Markus Persson tried to model a pig, he swapped the length and height values, creating a tall, thin body with four short legs. He turned the strange shape into a new hostile mob, gave it a green texture and made it explode. The creeper appeared in the earliest versions of the game in 2009 and became the face of Minecraft on merchandise, logos and memes.

Java vs Bedrock differences

Creepers behave almost the same in both editions. Explosion power, drops and charged creepers work the same way. In Java, flint and steel ignites creepers; Bedrock also supports this in current versions. Minor differences exist in how far a creeper must be before its fuse resets and in spawn rules for specific blocks.

Creeper commands

  • Summon a creeper: /summon creeper
  • Summon a charged creeper in Java: /summon creeper ~ ~ ~ {powered:1b}
  • Stop explosions breaking blocks: /gamerule mobGriefing false

See the full summon command reference for more options.

Creeper FAQ

What do creepers drop in Minecraft?

0 to 2 gunpowder, a music disc if killed by a skeleton arrow, and their head if killed by a charged creeper.

Why are creepers afraid of cats?

It is a built-in behavior: creepers flee from cats and ocelots, which makes cats great base defenders.

Do creepers burn in daylight?

No. Creepers survive sunlight, unlike zombies and skeletons.

How do you make a charged creeper?

Lightning must strike near a creeper. Use a Channeling trident in a thunderstorm or a lightning rod.

How much health does a creeper have?

20 health, or 10 hearts.
