How to Make Armor in Minecraft (Recipes, Materials and Best Armor)

Every armor recipe in Minecraft, how much material a set needs, armor points for each type and how to upgrade to netherite.

Armor is the single biggest survival upgrade in Minecraft. A full set of iron armor takes you from fragile to safe in most early fights, and diamond or netherite armor lets you take on bosses. Making armor is simple once you know the shapes, but the number of materials adds up. This guide explains how to make armor in Minecraft, how much of each material you need, how the armor types compare and how to upgrade them.

Quick answer: armor recipes

Armor recipes use the same shapes for every material:

PieceShape in a crafting tableMaterial needed
HelmetRow of 3 on top with one on each side below5
ChestplateTwo on top (corners), then rows of three, three8
LeggingsRow of 3 on top, then two columns of 27
BootsTwo columns of 2 in the bottom two rows4

A full set needs 24 pieces of material. Leave the empty slots empty.

Armor materials

Leather

Get leather from cows, horses and llamas. Use leather in the recipes above. Leather armor is the weakest, but it can be dyed, and it is cheap. See what cows eat to farm them.

Iron

Smelt raw iron into ingots in a furnace. See where to find iron. A full set needs 24 iron ingots, and a shield needs 1 more, plus planks. Iron is the standard early game armor.

Gold

Gold armor has low protection and wears out fast, but it enchants well and calms piglins. A single gold piece stops regular piglins from attacking you in the Nether. See how to find a bastion.

Diamond

Craft diamond armor from diamonds. It takes 24 diamonds for a full set. See how to find diamonds. Diamond armor is strong and lasts a long time.

Turtle shell helmet

Turtle scutes (from baby turtles that grew up) craft a turtle shell helmet. Put 5 scutes in a helmet shape. It gives you extra time underwater. See underwater enchantments.

Chainmail

You cannot craft chainmail armor in survival. You can find it in chests, get it from some mobs, or buy it from armorer villagers.

Netherite

Netherite armor is not crafted from scratch. Upgrade diamond armor at a smithing table with a netherite ingot and an upgrade template. See how to get netherite.

Armor comparison

ArmorFull set armor pointsNotes
Leather7Cheap, can be dyed
Gold11Low durability, best enchanting, calms piglins
Chainmail12Not craftable
Iron15Best early option
Diamond20Strong, with toughness
Netherite20Strongest, with toughness and knockback resistance

Each armor point blocks a small share of damage. At 20 points you take far less damage from most attacks. Toughness helps against very strong hits.

How much material for a set

  • Helmet: 5
  • Chestplate: 8
  • Leggings: 7
  • Boots: 4
  • Total: 24 iron ingots, diamonds or leather.

If you are short, make the chestplate first because it gives the most armor points, then the leggings, helmet and boots.

Armor trims and dyes

At a smithing table, you can add an armor trim template and a material such as iron, gold, diamond, resin or amethyst to give your armor a decorative pattern. See how to get resin. Leather armor can be dyed by combining it with any dye, such as cyan or brown.

Enchanting your armor

The best armor enchantments are Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on every piece, plus Respiration and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Feather Falling on the boots and Depth Strider for water travel. See how to enchant in Minecraft and what Mending does.

Repairing armor

  • Combine two damaged pieces in a crafting table or grindstone.
  • Use the matching material at an anvil (iron ingots for iron armor).
  • Use Mending for automatic repair.

Armor stands

An armor stand shows off your spare sets and trims. It is great for decoration in a trophy room.

Which armor should you make first?

  1. Leather if you have no iron yet, as a short-term fix.
  2. Iron as soon as you can; it is the best value.
  3. Diamond when you find enough diamonds.
  4. Netherite for late-game and boss fights.

Common problems

  • The recipe does not work: check the shape and the empty slots.
  • Not enough material: make the chestplate first.
  • Armor breaks fast: add Unbreaking and Mending.

Step by step: your first iron armor

  1. Mine 24 iron ore, or at least enough for the parts you want to make first.
  2. Smelt it in a furnace with coal or charcoal.
  3. Craft the chestplate first (8 ingots), then the leggings (7), helmet (5) and boots (4).
  4. Right-click each piece to wear it, or drag it to the armor slots in your inventory.

If you only have 8 iron, make a chestplate and wear leather for the rest. The chestplate gives the most protection of any single piece.

How armor works

Each armor point reduces incoming damage by a small percentage. Armor toughness makes strong hits hurt less, and enchantments such as Protection add more reduction on top. Armor does not stop starvation, drowning or void damage. Most other damage types, including falls, fire and explosions, are reduced by the right armor and enchantments. Wearing armor is a big deal in hard fights, so put it on before you leave home.

Armor durability and when to replace it

Armor loses durability when you take damage. Leather breaks fastest, iron and gold are in the middle, and diamond and netherite last the longest. When a piece is nearly broken, repair it at an anvil or replace it. With Mending, pieces repair themselves while you collect experience orbs, so you may never need a new set.

Armor for specific situations

For the Nether, wear one piece of gold armor with iron or diamond for the rest, so piglins stay calm. For underwater work, add a turtle shell helmet or Respiration III, and Depth Strider boots. For mining, use Unbreaking and Mending so your gear does not break while you dig. For lava and fire, add Fire Protection on a piece or two and carry a Fire Resistance potion. For bosses, wear the best set you have and bring a shield. Swapping a single piece based on where you are going costs nothing and makes your trip safer.

Armor shortcuts for beginners

If you are in a hurry, craft a full set of leather first, then replace the pieces with iron as you find ore. A leather set only needs 24 pieces of leather, which a small cow farm provides in a few days. As soon as you find a diamond vein, make a helmet and boots first if you are short, since they use the fewest diamonds, then add the chestplate and leggings. Keep your old armor in a chest in case you lose a piece to lava or the void.
