/setworldspawn

Sets the world spawn point.

TypeCommand

Data checked Oct 21, 2026

The /setworldspawn command sets the world spawn point: the place where new players appear when they first join, and where everyone respawns if they have no bed or respawn anchor. It is essential for servers, Realms and custom maps, and handy in single player if the default spawn is in a bad place, such as on top of a mountain or in the ocean. This command reference covers the syntax in Java and Bedrock, how world spawn works, the difference from personal spawn points, spawn radius, spawn chunks and common errors.

Syntax

Edition Syntax
Java /setworldspawn [pos] [angle]
Bedrock /setworldspawn [spawnPoint]
  • pos or spawnPoint (optional): the new spawn coordinates. If left out, it uses your current position.
  • angle (Java, optional): the direction players face when they spawn, as a yaw value.

Examples

Command Result
/setworldspawn Sets world spawn where you are standing
/setworldspawn 0 64 0 Sets spawn at the center of the world
/setworldspawn ~ ~ ~ Same as no arguments: your position
/setworldspawn 120 70 -340 90 Java: spawn at those coordinates facing west

World spawn vs personal spawn point

Type Who it affects How to set it
World spawn New players and anyone without a personal spawn /setworldspawn
Personal spawn point One player Sleep in a bed, use a respawn anchor in the Nether, or /spawnpoint

When you die, the game checks for your personal spawn point first. If your bed was destroyed or blocked, or you never slept in one, you respawn at the world spawn instead. That is why setting a good world spawn matters on servers: it is where players end up after losing their beds.

Spawn radius

Players do not always appear on the exact spawn block. In Survival and Adventure, the game picks a random safe spot within the spawnRadius game rule, which defaults to 10 blocks in Java and 5 in Bedrock, so that groups of players do not all land on one block. To make everyone spawn on the exact spot, for example in a spawn building on a server, set /gamerule spawnRadius 0. Creative and Spectator players always spawn on the exact spot. See the /gamerule reference.

Spawn chunks (Java)

In Java Edition, the area around world spawn includes spawn chunks, which can stay loaded even when no player is nearby. Technical players use them for farms and redstone that must keep running. In recent Java versions, the size of this always-loaded area is controlled by a game rule, and the default became much smaller than in older versions, so check your version before relying on spawn chunks. Moving world spawn with /setworldspawn moves the spawn chunks too, which can stop farms built in the old spawn chunks from running while you are away.

Compasses and world spawn

A normal compass always points to the world spawn in the Overworld. After you use /setworldspawn, every compass updates to point at the new location. Lodestone compasses and recovery compasses are not affected, because they point to a lodestone and your last death location instead.

Choosing a good spawn location

  • Safe and lit: no lava, cliffs or dark areas where mobs can spawn on new players.
  • Easy to find: a landmark such as a spawn building or tower helps players orient themselves.
  • Near resources: trees, water and animals help new players start.
  • Protected on servers: many servers protect the spawn area from building and griefing.
  • Informative: signs or a map at spawn explain rules and directions.

/setworldspawn in single player

In single player, you might move world spawn after building a base, so you never have to walk home after dying without a bed. Set it in a safe room inside your base, and keep a bed there too. If you play with keepInventory off, a spawn close to home also makes recovering dropped items easier. Remember that the world spawn only applies in the Overworld; dying in the Nether or End without a respawn anchor sends you back to the Overworld spawn or your bed.

Permissions

/setworldspawn requires cheats or operator permission. In Bedrock, using commands disables achievements for that world. On Realms, the owner or operators can use it.

Common errors

  • Players spawn in different places: spawnRadius is above 0. Set it to 0 for exact spawning.
  • Players spawn on the roof: the game moves players up to a safe surface if the spawn block is enclosed or unsafe; make sure the spawn point has two air blocks above solid ground.
  • Farms stopped working: moving spawn moved the spawn chunks in Java.
  • Command has no effect in the Nether: world spawn is an Overworld setting in most versions.

Related commands

  • /spawnpoint: set a single player’s respawn point.
  • /tp: move players to the spawn.
  • /gamerule: spawnRadius controls spawn spread.
  • /seed: share the world with its original spawn.

/setworldspawn FAQ

How do you set the world spawn in Minecraft?

Stand where you want it and type /setworldspawn.

How do you make players spawn on the exact block?

Set /gamerule spawnRadius 0.

What is the difference between /setworldspawn and /spawnpoint?

/setworldspawn changes spawn for everyone; /spawnpoint changes it for one player.

Does a bed override world spawn?

Yes, for the player who slept in it.

Setting up a server spawn

A good server spawn is the first thing every new player sees, so most server owners build a proper spawn hub. Choose a flat, central area, build a spawn building or plaza, then stand in the exact spot where players should appear and run /setworldspawn. Set /gamerule spawnRadius 0 so nobody lands outside the building. Add signs or a board with rules, a map of the world and directions to important places like the Nether portal hub, shops and community farms. Light everything well, protect the area from building with a plugin or spawn protection setting, and place a few starter resources nearby. Some servers also add portals or buttons at spawn that teleport players into the wilderness, so the area near spawn does not become crowded and stripped of trees.

Adventure map spawns

Map makers set the world spawn at the start of the map, often inside a lobby room with instructions. They use the Java angle argument so players face the first sign or door, and set spawnRadius to 0. Checkpoints later in the map usually use /spawnpoint for individual players instead, so each player respawns at the last checkpoint they reached rather than at the map start.

Moving spawn back to the original

There is no command to restore the original world spawn automatically. If you want to return it, look up the original spawn location before changing it, using a compass or by noting where you first spawned, then run /setworldspawn there later.

World spawn and the respawn screen

When a player dies and their bed is missing or obstructed, the respawn screen shows a message saying the bed was missing or obstructed, and they appear at world spawn. On servers, this is common after raids or griefing, so a well-built spawn with directions home makes a big difference. Remind players to sleep in a bed as soon as they settle, so they rarely need the world spawn.

In short: set the spot, set the radius, and keep the area safe and lit.

That covers almost every use of this command.

Done right, it makes every new player feel welcome.

Enjoy building your spawn.

And keep a bed nearby, always.
